13 Killed as Tourist Plane Crashes Near Peru’s Nazca Lines; Investigation Underway into Fatal Sightseeing Disaster
Lima/Nazca: A sightseeing flight carrying foreign tourists ended in tragedy on Saturday when a small aircraft crashed in an open field near Peru’s world-famous Nazca Lines, leaving all 13 people on board dead.
The aircraft was transporting 11 European visitors along with two Peruvian crew members for an aerial tour of the UNESCO-listed archaeological landmark when it went down, triggering one of the country’s deadliest tourism-related aviation accidents in recent years.
Authorities said the Cessna Caravan C-208 had departed from Pisco airport shortly after noon for the popular sightseeing excursion.
Nearly an hour into the flight, the crew reported an emergency before communication with air traffic controllers was abruptly lost.
The aircraft later crashed in the Pueblo Viejo area, a few kilometres from the city of Nazca, and burst into flames on impact, leaving no chance of survival for those on board.
Rescue teams rushed to the crash site, but officials confirmed that the force of the impact had destroyed the aircraft.
Police stated that all 13 occupants perished in the accident, while recovery teams began retrieving bodies from the wreckage.
Preliminary assessments indicate the crew may have encountered an in-flight emergency, though investigators have not yet identified the exact sequence of events that led to the crash.
The victims included seven Italian nationals, two Spaniards, two Germans and the Peruvian pilot and co-pilot.
Peru’s aviation authorities, assisted by the country’s air accident investigation commission, have launched a detailed inquiry to determine whether technical failure, weather conditions or any other factor contributed to the disaster.
The aircraft was operated by Aerodiana, a company that has conducted aerial tours over the Nazca Lines for nearly 14 years using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft.
The Nazca geoglyphs, etched across Peru’s southern desert and visible primarily from the air, attract around 100,000 visitors every year, making scenic flights a major part of the region’s tourism industry.
Expressing profound grief over the tragedy, President Keiko Fujimori conveyed condolences to the families of those killed and said authorities were considering a temporary suspension of operations at the airport while investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

विमान में 11 यूरोपीय पर्यटक तथा दो पेरूवासी चालक दल के सदस्य मौजूद थे। यह हादसा देश के पर्यटन क्षेत्र से जुड़े सबसे भीषण विमान हादसों में से एक माना जा रहा है।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार सेसना कैरावान सी-208 विमान ने दोपहर के समय पिस्को हवाई अड्डे से उड़ान भरी थी।
नाज़्का लाइन्स के ऊपर दर्शनीय उड़ान के दौरान चालक दल ने आपात स्थिति की सूचना दी, जिसके कुछ ही समय बाद विमान से संपर्क टूट गया।
बाद में विमान नाज़्का शहर के निकट पुएब्लो विएजो क्षेत्र में खुले मैदान में गिरकर आग की लपटों में घिर गया और उसमें सवार किसी भी व्यक्ति के बचने की संभावना नहीं रही।
सूचना मिलते ही राहत एवं बचाव दल घटनास्थल पर पहुंच गया, लेकिन दुर्घटना इतनी भीषण थी कि विमान पूरी तरह क्षतिग्रस्त हो चुका था।
पुलिस अधिकारियों ने सभी 13 लोगों की मृत्यु की पुष्टि करते हुए बताया कि मलबे से शवों को निकालने का अभियान शुरू कर दिया गया है।
प्रारंभिक संकेत उड़ान के दौरान किसी आपात स्थिति की ओर इशारा करते हैं, हालांकि दुर्घटना की वास्तविक वजह अभी स्पष्ट नहीं हो सकी है।
मृतकों में सात इटली, दो स्पेन और दो जर्मनी के नागरिक शामिल हैं, जबकि दोनों चालक दल के सदस्य पेरू के निवासी थे।
पेरू के नागरिक उड्डयन प्राधिकरण और विमान दुर्घटना जांच आयोग ने संयुक्त रूप से विस्तृत जांच शुरू कर दी है।
तकनीकी खराबी, मौसम अथवा अन्य संभावित कारणों के सभी पहलुओं की पड़ताल की जाएगी।
दुर्घटनाग्रस्त विमान का संचालन एयरोडियाना कंपनी कर रही थी, जो पिछले लगभग 14 वर्षों से सेसना ग्रैंड कैरावान विमानों के माध्यम से नाज़्का लाइन्स के ऊपर पर्यटन उड़ानों का संचालन करती रही है।
यूनेस्को विश्व धरोहर सूची में शामिल नाज़्का लाइन्स को देखने के लिए हर वर्ष लगभग एक लाख पर्यटक यहां पहुंचते हैं और हवाई भ्रमण इस क्षेत्र के पर्यटन का प्रमुख आकर्षण माना जाता है।
राष्ट्रपति केइको फुजीमोरी ने हादसे पर गहरा शोक व्यक्त करते हुए मृतकों के परिजनों के प्रति संवेदना प्रकट की है।
साथ ही उन्होंने संकेत दिया कि जांच पूरी होने तक संबंधित हवाई अड्डे के संचालन को अस्थायी रूप से निलंबित करने के प्रस्ताव पर भी विचार किया जा रहा है।
