Pakistan-Linked JeM Module Busted in Bengal; STF Says Suspect Planned to Target CM, Infiltrate Delhi Protest in Police Uniform
Kolkata: A suspected operative of the Pakistan-backed terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), arrested by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF), was allegedly involved in a wider conspiracy that included keeping surveillance on Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and infiltrating the recently concluded students’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar while disguised as a police officer.
Investigators believe the accused was acting under the directions of handlers based across the border, with the probe now expanding to uncover the full extent of the terror network.
The accused, identified as Mohammed Hamim Mondal, was taken into custody from Purba Bardhaman district on Friday and shifted to Kolkata for sustained interrogation.
According to senior STF officials, evidence gathered during the investigation points to his direct communication with Pakistan-based operatives who allegedly assigned him specific missions inside India.
Electronic records and other material recovered during the operation are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators claimed one of Mondal’s principal assignments was to closely monitor the movements and security arrangements of the Chief Minister.
He was allegedly instructed to identify occasions when the Chief Minister’s security cover could be comparatively weak and collect detailed information about vulnerable locations and travel patterns.
Officials also indicated that several senior police officers and political personalities figured among the potential targets being tracked by the module.
The inquiry has also uncovered an alleged plan to create disruption during the recent students’ demonstration at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
According to investigators, the accused intended to procure police uniforms and use the disguise to gain access to the protest venue before carrying out acts aimed at triggering panic and disorder.
The STF is examining whether additional members of the network were assigned roles in the proposed operation.
The investigation gathered further momentum after the arrest of Arpita Sarkar, alleged to be Mondal’s close associate.
STF officials suspect the two had conspired to lure the son of a West Bengal minister into a honey-trap, followed by kidnapping and extortion.
Investigators believe the alleged conspiracy was executed on instructions from Pakistan-based handlers linked to the Shahzad Bhatti network.
The precise role of each accused and the possibility of more conspirators remain under scrutiny.
Officials further alleged that the duo had been tasked with developing personal relationships with influential individuals to obtain confidential information useful for the terror network.
During searches, investigators recovered international SIM cards issued in the United Kingdom and Mexico, which are suspected to have been used for encrypted communication with foreign handlers and for strengthening sleeper cells operating in different parts of the country.
The STF said the investigation revealed that Mondal was allegedly radicalised through social media before establishing contact with Pakistan-based operatives.
His mobile phone and digital communication records are said to contain conversations conducted through encrypted platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Element X and Session, after the initial contact was made on Instagram.
Investigators have identified several online aliases, including “Rana”, “Uzair”, “Abid Jatt 333” and “Hamad”, who are suspected to be associated with the Shahzad Bhatti network, which agencies allege is involved in radicalisation, narco-terror financing and recruitment for extremist activities.
According to investigators, the case first surfaced after intelligence inputs indicated a conspiracy to abduct a minister’s son through a honey-trap and extort money from the family.
As the probe progressed, investigators claimed they uncovered a much larger cross-border terror network with multiple operational objectives.
Further investigation is underway to establish the complete chain of command and identify all those connected with the alleged module.

कोलकाता: पश्चिम बंगाल स्पेशल टास्क फोर्स (एसटीएफ) द्वारा गिरफ्तार किए गए पाकिस्तान समर्थित आतंकी संगठन जैश-ए-मोहम्मद (जेईएम) के कथित सदस्य के खिलाफ जांच में कई चौंकाने वाले खुलासे सामने आए हैं।
जांच एजेंसियों का दावा है कि आरोपी मुख्यमंत्री सुवेंदु अधिकारी की गतिविधियों पर नजर रखने के साथ-साथ दिल्ली के जंतर-मंतर पर हाल में हुए छात्र प्रदर्शन में पुलिसकर्मी का वेश धारण कर घुसपैठ और उपद्रव फैलाने की योजना पर भी काम कर रहा था।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार पूरा षड्यंत्र पाकिस्तान में बैठे संचालकों के निर्देश पर संचालित किया जा रहा था।
मोहम्मद हमीम मंडल को शुक्रवार को पूर्व बर्दवान जिले से गिरफ्तार कर पूछताछ के लिए कोलकाता लाया गया।
एसटीएफ के वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों का कहना है कि अब तक की जांच में उसके पाकिस्तान स्थित संचालकों से सीधे संपर्क के पर्याप्त संकेत मिले हैं।
जांच एजेंसियां उसके कब्जे से बरामद इलेक्ट्रॉनिक उपकरणों और अन्य दस्तावेजों की गहन पड़ताल कर रही हैं।
जांच के दौरान यह भी सामने आया कि आरोपी को मुख्यमंत्री की गतिविधियों, आवागमन और सुरक्षा व्यवस्था पर लगातार नजर रखने का जिम्मा सौंपा गया था।
उसे ऐसे स्थानों और अवसरों की जानकारी जुटाने के निर्देश दिए गए थे जहां सुरक्षा अपेक्षाकृत कम हो सकती थी।
प्रारंभिक जांच में यह भी संकेत मिले हैं कि कुछ वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों और राजनीतिक हस्तियों को भी इस मॉड्यूल ने अपने निशाने पर रखा था।
एसटीएफ के अनुसार आरोपी ने हाल में जंतर-मंतर पर हुए छात्र प्रदर्शन में पुलिस की वर्दी पहनकर प्रवेश करने और वहां अराजकता फैलाने की योजना भी बनाई थी।
जांचकर्ताओं का मानना है कि इस योजना का उद्देश्य भीड़ के बीच घुसकर बड़े पैमाने पर अफरा-तफरी पैदा करना था।
एजेंसी यह भी जांच कर रही है कि इस कथित साजिश में और कौन-कौन लोग शामिल थे।
मामले ने नया मोड़ तब लिया जब एसटीएफ ने आरोपी की करीबी सहयोगी अर्पिता सरकार को भी गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
अधिकारियों का आरोप है कि दोनों ने पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार के एक मंत्री के बेटे को हनी-ट्रैप में फंसाकर उसका अपहरण करने और परिवार से फिरौती वसूलने की योजना बनाई थी।
जांच एजेंसियों का कहना है कि इस कथित साजिश का संचालन भी पाकिस्तान में बैठे शाहजाद भट्टी गिरोह से जुड़े संचालकों के निर्देश पर किया जा रहा था।
प्रत्येक आरोपी की भूमिका और संभावित अन्य सहयोगियों की जांच जारी है।
एसटीएफ का दावा है कि दोनों आरोपियों को प्रभावशाली लोगों से व्यक्तिगत संबंध स्थापित कर गोपनीय सूचनाएं जुटाने का भी जिम्मा सौंपा गया था।
तलाशी के दौरान उनके कब्जे से यूनाइटेड किंगडम और मेक्सिको से जारी अंतरराष्ट्रीय सिम कार्ड बरामद किए गए।
एजेंसियों को आशंका है कि इनका इस्तेमाल विदेशी संचालकों से एन्क्रिप्टेड संपर्क बनाए रखने और देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में सक्रिय स्लीपर सेल नेटवर्क को मजबूत करने के लिए किया जा रहा था।
जांच अधिकारियों के अनुसार आरोपी पहले सोशल मीडिया के माध्यम से कट्टरपंथी विचारधारा के प्रभाव में आया और बाद में पाकिस्तान स्थित तत्वों के संपर्क में पहुंचा।
मोबाइल फोन और डिजिटल चैट की जांच में व्हाट्सएप, टेलीग्राम, एलिमेंट एक्स और सेशन जैसे एन्क्रिप्टेड प्लेटफॉर्म पर विदेशी संचालकों से नियमित बातचीत के संकेत मिले हैं।
जांच में ‘राना’, ‘उजैर’, ‘आबिद जट्ट 333’ और ‘हमाद’ जैसे ऑनलाइन नाम सामने आए हैं, जिनके शाहजाद भट्टी नेटवर्क से जुड़े होने का संदेह जताया गया है।
एजेंसियों के अनुसार यह नेटवर्क कट्टरपंथ फैलाने, नार्को-टेरर फंडिंग और युवाओं की भर्ती जैसी गतिविधियों में संलिप्त रहा है।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक इस पूरे मॉड्यूल का खुलासा उस समय हुआ जब एक मंत्री के बेटे को हनी-ट्रैप के जरिए अगवा कर परिवार से धन उगाही की साजिश संबंधी इनपुट मिले।
जांच आगे बढ़ने पर कथित तौर पर एक व्यापक सीमा-पार आतंकी नेटवर्क के संकेत मिले। एजेंसियां अब पूरे षड्यंत्र की कमान संभालने वाले लोगों तथा इससे जुड़े अन्य संदिग्धों की पहचान में जुटी हैं।
