1991 Jammu Railway Station Blast: Suspect Arrested After 35 Years, Police Say
Jammu Railway Police have arrested Altaf Hussain Sheikh, an alleged accused in the 1991 Jammu Railway Station blast that killed three people and injured 18, after 35 years.
JAMMU: A 35-year-old investigation into the 1991 bombing at Jammu Railway Station has produced a fresh breakthrough, with the Government Railway Police (GRP) arresting a man who had allegedly remained underground for decades by assuming a concealed identity.

Jammu and Kashmir Police said Thursday that Sheikh was arrested after investigators traced and verified his identity following an intensive search launched by the GRP around two years ago.
The case dates back to a deadly explosion on Platform No. 1 of Jammu Railway Station in 1991.
Three people, including two paramilitary personnel, were killed in the blast, while 18 others sustained injuries.
Suspect allegedly built new identity
According to police, Sheikh had allegedly disappeared after the bombing and remained out of the reach of investigators for approximately three and a half decades.
Police said investigators recently revisited his identity and residential records in detail.
Their inquiry allegedly led them to a man living in the Bijbehara area under a concealed identity and operating as an established businessman.
After conducting a detailed verification of his personal and residential particulars,
investigators concluded that the businessman was allegedly the long-absconding suspect in the railway station bombing.
The GRP subsequently arrested Sheikh.
Second arrest in decades-old case
Sheikh’s arrest is the second in the case. Another accused, Aman Ullah Khan, was apprehended on the day of the 1991 explosion.
Police are continuing efforts to locate the other people accused in the case.
The investigation has been registered under provisions of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, 1991, commonly known as TADA.
Produced before TADA court
Following his arrest, Sheikh was produced before a designated TADA court on Thursday.
The latest development comes after years of limited movement in the case and represents a significant step for investigators seeking to establish the role of those allegedly involved in the bombing.
Police said the long-pending investigation remains active and efforts are continuing to trace the remaining accused.
The 1991 blast remains one of the major attacks associated with the period of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
With the latest arrest, investigators are expected to focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding the accused’s alleged involvement and the identities and whereabouts of other suspects still at large.

जम्मू: जम्मू रेलवे स्टेशन पर वर्ष 1991 में हुए घातक बम धमाके की जांच में 35 साल बाद एक अहम सफलता मिली है।
सरकारी रेलवे पुलिस (GRP) ने इस मामले में लंबे समय से फरार चल रहे कथित आरोपी अल्ताफ हुसैन शेख को गिरफ्तार किया है।
पुलिस का दावा है कि आरोपी ने कई दशकों तक अपनी पहचान छिपाकर जीवन बिताया।
जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस ने गुरुवार को बताया कि शेख अनंतनाग जिले के बिजबेहरा का रहने वाला है।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, करीब दो साल पहले शुरू की गई गहन तलाश के बाद जांचकर्ताओं ने उसकी पहचान और ठिकाने की पुष्टि की और उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
यह मामला 1991 में जम्मू रेलवे स्टेशन के प्लेटफॉर्म नंबर 1 पर हुए विस्फोट से जुड़ा है। धमाके में तीन लोगों की मौत हुई थी, जिनमें दो अर्धसैनिक बलों के जवान शामिल थे।
घटना में 18 लोग घायल भी हुए थे।
पहचान छिपाकर बिजबेहरा में बना रहा कारोबारी
पुलिस के अनुसार, धमाके के बाद शेख कथित रूप से भूमिगत हो गया था और लंबे समय तक जांच एजेंसियों की पकड़ से बाहर रहा।
करीब दो साल पहले GRP ने इस मामले में फरार आरोपियों की तलाश तेज की।
जांच के दौरान अधिकारियों ने शेख की पहचान, पुराने पते और आवासीय रिकॉर्ड समेत उससे जुड़ी जानकारियों की बारीकी से पड़ताल की।
पुलिस का कहना है कि जांच के दौरान उन्हें पता चला कि बिजबेहरा क्षेत्र में एक व्यक्ति छिपी हुई पहचान के साथ रह रहा था और उसने वहां एक सफल कारोबारी के रूप में अपनी पहचान बना ली थी।
रिकॉर्ड और व्यक्तिगत विवरणों की विस्तृत जांच के बाद पुलिस ने कथित तौर पर इस व्यक्ति की पहचान लंबे समय से फरार अल्ताफ हुसैन शेख के रूप में की। इसके बाद GRP ने उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
मामले में यह दूसरी गिरफ्तारी
1991 के इस मामले में शेख की गिरफ्तारी दूसरी बड़ी गिरफ्तारी है। पुलिस ने एक अन्य आरोपी अमान उल्लाह खान को धमाके वाले दिन ही गिरफ्तार कर लिया था।
हालांकि, पुलिस के मुताबिक मामले में शामिल अन्य आरोपियों की तलाश अभी जारी है। जांच एजेंसियां उन लोगों का पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रही हैं जिनके खिलाफ इस मामले में आरोप दर्ज हैं।
सभी आरोपियों के खिलाफ आतंकवादी और विघटनकारी गतिविधियां (रोकथाम) अधिनियम, 1991 यानी TADA के तहत मामले दर्ज किए गए हैं।
TADA अदालत में पेश किया गया
गिरफ्तारी के बाद अल्ताफ हुसैन शेख को गुरुवार को TADA अदालत के समक्ष पेश किया गया।
पुलिस के लिए यह गिरफ्तारी इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण मानी जा रही है क्योंकि मामले में मुख्य कार्रवाई के करीब साढ़े तीन दशक बाद एक और आरोपी जांच के दायरे में आया है।
अब जांचकर्ताओं का ध्यान शेख की कथित भूमिका, उसके लंबे समय तक फरार रहने और मामले में नामजद अन्य आरोपियों तक पहुंचने पर है।
पुलिस ने संकेत दिया है कि मामले की जांच जारी है और फरार आरोपियों को पकड़ने के लिए प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं।
