The year 2014 was supposed to mark a meaningful return to the lens for me (actor Tanveer Zaidi).
A reputed physician, Doctor Vinod Singh, arrived at my office with a senior colleague and producer, Ashok Srivastava.
The doctor had a dream: to produce a good film. The meetings were fruitful, and the project was set in motion.
The initial story was penned by my wife, Ruby Zaidi, after which I dictated the screenplay to Mehdi Abidi, who put it on paper.
Together, Mehdi Abidi and I completed the screenplay and dialogue, handing it over to the producer, Doctor Vinod Singh, a nice human being.
Then came the first fracture. The producer brought in another writer to add ‘sharpness’ to the script.
I, who was also cast as the lead, chose not to overexert my creative control. I was told that Ashok Srivastava would serve as the co-producer.
The cast and crew eventually arrived at the location in Jaunpur. According to the original storyline, my character was in love with a girl from another caste, against the wishes of the villagers.
The narrative was moving towards a predicted honour killing, which was averted by the characters played by Doctor Vinod Singh and his female partner, Divya Dwivedi.
The director’s chair was given to a young talent, Sachin Yadav, whom I had earlier auditioned and found promising, provided he was given the proper facilities.
But from my perspective, the film was not well-made.
The reason became clear when I received my copy of the story; it had been entirely changed. Despite this, I remained the lead hero opposite an actress named Kajal.
On the sets while shooting, trouble erupted. Actress Divya Dwivedi refused to play the character opposite Doctor Vinod Singh, citing the significant age difference.
She alleged that she had been told something entirely different at the time of her agreement. As she prepared to quit, I was also not satisfied with the way things were moving.
My friend and senior, Ashok Srivastava, was nowhere to be seen in the print materials. It seemed he had been thrown out of the project. I lost my smile.
There was no excitement about doing a new film on my face. I became depressed. I informed Doctor Vinod Singh in the presence of actors Pramod Moutho and Ahsan Khan that if Divya left, I would walk away too.
I lost my cool but ultimately convinced Divya to stay, driven by a sense of professionalism.
Yet, my interest in the project had died. My childhood instinct, honed by years in cinema, told me that both energy and money were being wasted.
The producer, though new, had an exclusive vision, often behaving like a child. Before a song shoot, he pleaded with me:
‘Tanveer, this is your and Kajal’s song. Brother, allow me to have this song filmed on Divya and me?’ I replied, ‘As you wish.’
This pattern did not stop. Doctor Vinod Singh began trying to become Amitabh Bachchan while planning a Rishi Kapoor-type role for me.
I raised my voice multiple times, but no one understood. By the end, I had become a parallel hero, but a hopeless man.
The worst, however, was yet to unfold. During a climax fight scene against the villain, Ahsan Khan, a shot was being filmed nearly forty feet above the ground. Both Ahsan Khan and I were in aerial harnesses.
My harness was tied unevenly. While the fight progressed, I felt severe pain. When the shot ended, and we descended, I removed my clothes to find half my body had turned blue.
I showed the injury to Dr Vinod Singh, who was a working physician. His response was: ‘Need not worry, it is just normal.’
Shooting was completed, and I moved on to another movie. Then came an unbearable headache. I was admitted to a hospital in my hometown, where a CT scan revealed blood clots in my brain.
I was subsequently admitted to Leelavati Hospital in Mumbai. A doctor there asked about any history of injury. I recounted the incident of my body turning blue while shooting for the movie Guardians.
The doctor concluded that the cause of the clots might be the unbalanced harness, which had pulled my veins and caused internal injury.
That was not the complete story. Medicines became a daily necessity.
Two years later, the release of another of my films, ‘Ishq Samandar’, required me to visit thirteen or fourteen cities for promotions.
The schedule was hectic. On the tenth day of the film’s successful run, late at night, I suffered a severe brain haemorrhage. Thanks to my family and the doctors, I did not die.

अंततः कलाकार और क्रू जौनपुर के स्थान पर पहुंचे। मूल कहानी के अनुसार, मेरा किरदार गाँव वालों की इच्छा के खिलाफ दूसरी जाति की लड़की से प्यार करता था। कहानी एक अनुमानित ऑनर किलिंग की ओर बढ़ रही थी, जिसे डॉक्टर विनोद सिंह और उनकी सह-अभिनेत्री, दिव्या द्विवेदी के किरदारों ने टाल दिया।
निर्देशक की कुर्सी एक युवा प्रतिभा, सचिन यादव को दी गई, जिन्हें मैंने पहले ऑडिशन में प्रतिभाशाली पाया था, बशर्ते उन्हें उचित सुविधाएँ दी जाएँ। लेकिन मेरे नजरिए से, फिल्म अच्छी नहीं बन रही थी। कारण तब स्पष्ट हुआ जब मुझे कहानी की अपनी प्रति मिली; वह पूरी तरह से बदल चुकी थी। इसके बावजूद, मैं काजल नाम की अभिनेत्री के विपरीत मुख्य नायक बना रहा हूँ।
शूटिंग के दौरान सेट पर मुसीबत खड़ी हो गई। अभिनेत्री दिव्या द्विवेदी ने डॉक्टर विनोद सिंह के विपरीत किरदार निभाने से इनकार कर दिया, जिसका कारण उम्र का बड़ा अंतर था। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि उनसे समझौते के समय कुछ और ही कहा गया था। जब वह फिल्म छोड़ने को तैयार हुईं, तो मैं भी चीजों के बढ़ने के तरीके से संतुष्ट नहीं था।
मेरे मित्र और वरिष्ठ, अशोक श्रीवास्तव, प्रिंट मटीरियल में कहीं नजर नहीं आ रहे थे। ऐसा लग रहा था कि उन्हें प्रोजेक्ट से बाहर कर दिया गया था। मैंने अपनी मुस्कान खो दी। एक नई फिल्म करने का कोई उत्साह मेरे चेहरे पर नहीं था। मैं उदास हो गया।
मैंने अभिनेताओं प्रमोद माउथो और अहसान खान की मौजूदगी में डॉक्टर विनोद सिंह से कहा कि अगर दिव्या ने फिल्म छोड़ी, तो मैं भी चला जाऊंगा। मैंने अपना आपा खो दिया, लेकिन व्यावसायिकता के कारण दिव्या को रुकने के लिए मना लिया। फिर भी, फिल्म में मेरी रुचि समाप्त हो चुकी थी। सिनेमा के प्रति मेरे बचपन के अनुभव ने मुझे बता दिया था कि ऊर्जा और पैसा दोनों बर्बाद हो रहे हैं।

डॉक्टर विनोद सिंह अमिताभ बच्चन बनने की कोशिश करने लगे, और मेरे लिए उन्होंने ऋषि कपूर जैसी भूमिका की योजना बनाई। मैंने कई बार आवाज उठाई, लेकिन कोई समझने वाला नहीं था। अंत में, मैं एक समानांतर नायक बनकर रह गया।
सबसे बुरा अभी आना बाकी था। एक चरमोत्कर्ष की लड़ाई के दृश्य के दौरान, जो खलनायक अहसान खान के साथ फिल्माया जा रहा था, लगभग चालीस फीट ऊपर से एक शॉट लिया जा रहा था। अहसान खान और मैं दोनों हार्नेस में बंधे थे।
मेरा हार्नेस असंतुलित बंधा था। जैसे-जैसे लड़ाई का दृश्य चल रहा था, मुझे तेज दर्द महसूस हुआ। जब शॉट खत्म हुआ और हम नीचे उतरे, तो मैंने कपड़े हटाए तो पाया कि मेरा आधा शरीर नीला पड़ गया था।
मैंने अपनी चोट डॉक्टर विनोद सिंह को दिखाई, जो एक प्रैक्टिसिंग चिकित्सक थे। उनका जवाब था: ‘चिंता मत करो, यह सामान्य है।’
शूटिंग खत्म हुई, और मैं दूसरी फिल्म की शूटिंग में लग गया। फिर एक असहनीय सिरदर्द शुरू हुआ। मुझे अपने गृहनगर के एक अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया, जहाँ सीटी स्कैन में मेरे दिमाग में खून के थक्के पाए गए। बाद में मुझे मुंबई के लीलावती अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया।
वहाँ के डॉक्टर ने चोट के इतिहास के बारे में पूछा। मैंने फिल्म गार्जियंस की शूट पर शरीर के नीला पड़ने वाली घटना बताई। डॉक्टर ने निष्कर्ष निकाला कि थक्कों का कारण असंतुलित हार्नेस हो सकता है, जिसने मेरी नसों पर दबाव डाला और आंतरिक चोट पहुंचाई। यह पूरी कहानी नहीं थी। दवाएँ मेरे दैनिक जीवन का हिस्सा बन गईं।
दो साल बाद, मेरी एक अन्य फिल्म ‘इश्क समंदर’ की रिलीज के लिए प्रचार हेतु तेरह-चौदह शहरों का दौरा करना आवश्यक था। यह शेड्यूल कठिन था। फिल्म की सफलता के दसवें दिन, देर रात, मुझे गंभीर मस्तिष्क रक्तस्राव हुआ। मेरे परिवार और डॉक्टरों की बदौलत, मेरी मृत्यु नहीं हुई।
