NEET Aspirant Found Dead in Delhi After Exam Cancellation Shock, Family Says She Was Under Stress
A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Delhi’s Azadpur had believed that this year would finally change her life. After two unsuccessful attempts and narrowly missing qualification by just four marks last year, she had returned home from the recent National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG) feeling optimistic and relieved.
According to her family, she was confident that her hard work had finally paid off.
However, days later, the National Testing Agency cancelled the examination following allegations of a paper leak and announced a re-test scheduled for June 21.
The development reportedly left the young student deeply distressed, as she now had to prepare once again for the highly competitive medical entrance examination.
On Thursday afternoon, the woman was allegedly found hanging inside her room at her residence in Lal Bagh, Azadpur, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide.
The matter came to the attention of authorities after police received a PCR call stating that a family was attempting to conduct a cremation without informing officials. Police reached Kewal Park Shamshan Ghat, where the family had taken the body.
Family members said the young woman had dedicated the last three years of her life to preparing for NEET. Her maternal aunt recalled how determined she had been despite repeated setbacks.
“Last year, she missed the cutoff by only four marks. The family had great hopes for her, especially her father,” she said.
The family lives in Lal Bagh, a densely populated settlement in North Delhi marked by cramped lanes, temporary shops and tangled overhead electric wires.
Their modest two-room house is located in a narrow lane opposite an Atal Canteen, accessible via a steep staircase barely wide enough for two people to pass comfortably. Relatives said her father earns a living as a cab driver.
According to relatives, the student had been visibly tense over the past few days. Her uncle told reporters that the pressure of securing admission to a medical college had been weighing heavily on her mind.
“She desperately wanted to become a doctor and had been carrying this burden for a long time,” he said.
At the time of the incident, her parents were reportedly away from home. Her uncle said he learned about the tragedy only after returning home later that evening.
Police officials stated that the young woman was at home with her twin sister on Thursday afternoon.
The two sisters had lunch together before she went into her room.
Sensing that she had been emotionally disturbed for some time, the sister later went to check on her. When she opened the door, she allegedly found her hanging, a police officer said.
The family immediately informed the parents and rushed her to a cremation ground around 7 pm.
Police said the family was unaware of the legal formalities required in such cases and therefore took the body directly for cremation instead of informing authorities first.
After police intervention, the body was taken into custody and shifted to the mortuary at BJRM Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the immense academic pressure faced by students preparing for competitive examinations like NEET, especially amid controversies and uncertainty surrounding the examination process.
