Prayagraj: A 37-year-old man allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday night after hanging himself while talking to his wife over a video call.

Family members said he had been deeply distressed because his wife had gone to her parents’ home and had not returned.

The deceased, identified as Rohit Sonkar, was a resident of Chhota Baghada in the Meerapur area and worked at a hotel.

According to his relatives, the incident came to light when family members discovered him hanging in his room.

Rohit’s younger brother, Rahul, said that their parents were asleep when the tragedy occurred.

His wife, Nisha, had left for her maternal home in March along with their two children and had not returned since then.

On Wednesday night, Rohit was speaking to her through a video call when he allegedly took the extreme step.

Rahul said Rohit had been emotionally disturbed by his wife’s prolonged absence. He had recently visited his in-laws’ home to bring her and the children back, but she did not accompany him, which left him further upset.

Family members also revealed that the couple had been facing marital difficulties for some time.

Following an earlier dispute, Nisha had moved to her parents’ house, and a divorce petition had reportedly been filed in court.

However, on Wednesday, Nisha and her mother had reportedly assured Rohit over the phone that she would return after completing the children’s school admission formalities.

Rohit is survived by his wife, a five-year-old son, and a six-year-old daughter.

Police have initiated proceedings and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
