Leopard Attacks in Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane Belt Faces Rising Threat as Fatalities Mount

Bijnor and Moradabad emerge as major conflict zones, with hundreds of villages reporting leopard movement; a verified five-year statewide toll remains unavailable.

LUCKNOW: Residents of villages across western Uttar Pradesh are facing an increasingly dangerous coexistence with leopards, as the big cats venture into agricultural fields and inhabited areas in search of shelter and prey.

Bijnor and neighbouring Moradabad have become particular hotspots, with forest officials struggling to contain encounters in a landscape dominated by sugarcane cultivation.

A precise five-year count of people killed and injured by leopard attacks across Uttar Pradesh remains difficult to establish.

The available government records do not provide a consolidated statewide figure covering both fatalities and injuries. Consequently, a comprehensive total for the entire state could not be independently verified.

District-level figures, however, indicate the severity of the problem. In Bijnor, leopard attacks reportedly claimed 23 lives and injured 24 people between January 1, 2023, and August 15, 2024.

The situation has continued to attract concern in subsequent years. Figures reported for Bijnor and Moradabad indicate that leopard attacks killed 11 people and injured another 30 during 2026, highlighting the continuing danger in the two districts.

Sugarcane fields provide cover for leopards.

The geography of the region is a major factor behind the growing conflict. Extensive sugarcane plantations provide dense cover in which leopards can hide, breed, and move close to villages without being easily detected.

The fields also support a steady supply of potential prey, including livestock in surrounding settlements.

Forest officials refer to these animals as “sugarcane leopards” because of their close association with agricultural land rather than conventional forest habitats.

The Ramganga River corridor provides another route through which the animals can move between Bijnor and Moradabad.

A survey conducted in 2025 estimated that 444 leopards were present in conflict-affected areas of Bijnor.

The assessment was based on direct and indirect sightings recorded over a year. Officials warned that the population could increase substantially without effective intervention.

Leopard activity is no longer confined to isolated pockets.

Hundreds of villages across the two districts have reportedly recorded sightings or movement, leaving residents concerned about travelling to fields, tending livestock and venturing outdoors after dark.

Capture operations struggle to keep pace.e

The Forest Department has stepped up trapping and rescue operations, but capturing individual animals has not eliminated the wider problem.

During 2026, a reported 92 leopards were captured in Bijnor and Moradabad, compared with 52 in the preceding year.

Officials have warned that repeated captures may not provide a lasting solution if the ecological conditions supporting the leopard population remain unchanged.

Animals can continue to move through agricultural land, while new sightings emerge in areas where residents had previously encountered them only rarely.

The conflict has also prompted calls for a long-term population management strategy.

A proposal under consideration envisages sterilising a proportion of the leopard population in Bijnor over five years, subject to government approval and the necessary wildlife clearances.

The objective is to moderate population growth rather than rely exclusively on repeated capture operations.

Residents seek greater protection.

For people living in affected villages, the issue is no longer limited to occasional wildlife sightings. Families worry about children playing outdoors, farmers working among tall crops,s and residents returning home after sunset.

Local police are sometimes called upon to assist forest personnel when leopards enter populated areas. Injured residents are taken to nearby medical facilities for initial treatment and referred to district hospitals when necessary.

The growing number of encounters underscores the need for better monitoring, rapid-response teams, public awareness, ss and practical safety measures around vulnerable settlements.

Reliable, district-wise records of deaths and injuries would also help authorities assess the scale of the problem and direct resources to the areas facing the greatest risk.

Until a consolidated statewide database becomes available, figures from individual districts offer only a partial picture of the human cost of leopard attacks in Uttar Pradesh.

The available evidence nevertheless indicates that the sugarcane-growing belt around Bijnor and Moradabad remains a major area of concern.
