For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the transition from an IPL sensation to a regular member of India’s T20 international team is proving less straightforward than his extraordinary performances might suggest.
The teenager’s remarkable 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, during which he piled up 776 runs, established him as one of the competition’s standout batters.
His performances brought major batting honours and earned him opportunities in India’s squads for assignments in Ireland and England.
Yet, international selection has not translated into a consistent place in the starting eleven.
With established performers competing for the same positions, Sooryavanshi has frequently found himself waiting on the sidelines.
India captain Shreyas Iyer has now offered insight into the thinking behind the team’s approach, making it clear that the youngster’s talent alone will not prompt an immediate reshuffle at the top of the order.
Why India Are Reluctant to Change Their Opening Pair
The current preference for Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson has left Sooryavanshi competing for opportunities rather than enjoying an uninterrupted run in the side.
Iyer believes the existing combination deserves continued backing because of its contribution and consistency.
The captain’s explanation, delivered after India’s T20I series against the West Indies ended in a 2-2 draw, centred on the difficulty of dropping established performers when they continue to deliver.
Rather than allowing frustration over selection to affect his game, Sooryavanshi has been encouraged to concentrate on his preparation and remain mentally relaxed.
Iyer indicated that he had discussed the situation with the youngster since the Afghanistan series.
The message was that opportunities would come, but the team could not disregard the performances of its current openers simply to create room for another batter.
The advice reflects a familiar challenge in international cricket: an impressive individual season does not automatically displace players who have already established their value to the team.
Three England Appearances, Then Another Spell on the Bench
Sooryavanshi’s international career has already demonstrated how quickly team combinations can change.
During the England tour, Sanju Samson’s run of modest scores opened the door for the teenager to make his debut.
Sooryavanshi subsequently appeared in three matches against England, but he was unable to reproduce the same level of dominance that had made him such a sensation in the IPL.
Samson returned for the final match of that series.
His standing in the team was further strengthened by his recognition as Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, an achievement that underlined his credentials at the highest level.
Sooryavanshi did not feature in India’s subsequent series against Afghanistan or the West Indies. Samson was preferred for the Afghanistan matches, while the youngster’s place in the side remained uncertain.
There was a different combination during the Asian Games, when Abhishek, Samson and Sooryavanshi all featured together.
However, that arrangement did not lead to a permanent change in the selection pecking order, and Sooryavanshi was again left out during the West Indies series.
Patience Will Be Crucial for the Young Batter
Sooryavanshi’s limited appearances have come despite the attention generated by his IPL performances and his earlier recognition in international cricket, including Player of the Series honours in Zimbabwe.
His challenge now is to remain prepared while competing against players with established international records. The opening positions are particularly difficult to secure because Abhishek and Samson continue to command the management’s confidence.
Iyer’s remarks suggest that India are prioritising continuity rather than making selection decisions based solely on the excitement surrounding a rising star.
For Sooryavanshi, the immediate objective will be to use the time away from the playing eleven to sharpen his game and be ready when the team requires him.
His IPL campaign has already demonstrated his potential; converting that promise into a lasting international career will depend on how he responds to limited opportunities and makes the most of his next chance.
