UP Murder Case Takes Bizarre Turn as ‘Dead’ Accused Reappears After 18 Months
Mau, Uttar Pradesh: A murder prosecution in Uttar Pradesh has taken an extraordinary turn after a man believed to have died during the proceedings was found alive, prompting police to investigate an alleged scheme involving artificial intelligence, a staged cremation and a questionable death certificate.
The man, identified as 38-year-old Raj Kumar Rajbhar alias Raju, was arrested in Mau on Sunday after reportedly returning to see his wife and children. He was subsequently sent to jail by a court.
Police suspect that Rajbhar spent nearly a year and a half concealing his whereabouts after creating the impression that he had died.
The alleged deception came to light while he was facing trial for a killing dating back to 2016.
Investigators are now trying to establish how the purported death was recorded in official documents and whether anyone helped him manufacture the evidence.
Mau Circle Officer Nitesh Pratap Singh said the police were preparing to inform the court handling the murder case that the accused was alive.
A missing accused, a continuing murder trial
The case against Rajbhar originated in a dispute that allegedly ended in the killing of Yogesh Singh, a brick kiln operator.
Police registered a murder case in 2016 against Rajbhar and Sudarshan Rajbhar, arrested both men and subsequently filed a chargesheet. Both were later granted bail.
The trial progressed, and witness examination had reportedly been completed when documents claiming Rajbhar had died were placed before the court last year.
According to a police officer, the proceedings against him were thereafter separated from those involving the co-accused.
The supposed death had therefore become a significant development in a case approaching its concluding stages.
His arrest has now raised questions about the authenticity of the documents and the circumstances in which they were accepted during the proceedings.
How investigators suspect the death was staged
The police investigation points to an alleged incident in neighbouring Ghazipur district in May last year.
Investigators believe Rajbhar was presented as unconscious and taken to a hospital before a funeral scene was arranged to support the claim that he had died.
According to the preliminary police account, photographs were manipulated to depict what appeared to be his final rites.
Investigators suspect he positioned himself on a prepared funeral pyre, while a goat’s carcass was later burned to make the cremation appear genuine.
Artificial intelligence is believed to have played a role in making the images more convincing.
Police are examining the photographs to determine how they were altered and to identify the people who appear in them.
The alleged plan was not confined to photographs. Investigators suspect that Rajbhar used details of the purported death to obtain a death certificate from municipal authorities in Ghazipur.
That document was subsequently presented in the murder proceedings.
The police are now examining the records behind the certificate’s issuance and whether the process involved false information, forged supporting material, or assistance from other individuals.
Two doctors named in questioning; police seek independent verification
During interrogation, Rajbhar reportedly claimed that two doctors who were his clients had advised him to stage his death to escape the criminal case. Police have not established the truth of this allegation and say the statement will be checked independently.
Investigators are also trying to determine whether the people who appeared in the funeral photographs knowingly participated in the alleged plan or were unaware of its purpose.
A separate forgery case has been registered following Rajbhar’s arrest. The investigation is expected to examine both the alleged creation of false evidence and its use in legal proceedings.
Debt and movements across districts under scrutiny
Residents reportedly alerted the police to the possibility that Rajbhar had fabricated his death. They also indicated that he was under considerable financial pressure because of debt.
Police sources said Rajbhar had previously lived in Mumbai, where he was involved in trading and share-market-related activities.
After his alleged disappearance, he is believed to have moved between locations including Ghazipur and Azamgarh.
His return to Mau appears to have provided investigators with an opportunity to locate and arrest him.
Police are now piecing together his movements during the period in which he was presumed dead.
The investigation will need to establish whether the death certificate was obtained through deliberate misrepresentation, whether other people facilitated the alleged fraud,d and how the documents affected the murder proceedings.
For now, the case has shifted from a prosecution involving a 2016 killing to a broader inquiry into alleged fabricated evidence and the misuse of official records.
The police say the investigation is continuing, and the allegations will be tested through the legal process.

हत्या के मुकदमे में आया था नया मोड़
राजभर के खिलाफ मामला वर्ष 2016 में ईंट-भट्ठा संचालक योगेश सिंह की हत्या से जुड़ा है। पुलिस के अनुसार, पैसों के विवाद के बाद योगेश सिंह की हत्या हुई थी।
इस मामले में राज कुमार राजभर और सुदर्शन राजभर के खिलाफ मुकदमा दर्ज किया गया। दोनों को गिरफ्तार करने के बाद पुलिस ने आरोपपत्र दाखिल किया था। बाद में दोनों को जमानत मिल गई।
मुकदमा आगे बढ़ा और गवाहों के बयान दर्ज होने के बाद सुनवाई अंतिम चरण के करीब पहुंच गई। इसी दौरान पिछले वर्ष राजभर की कथित मृत्यु से जुड़े दस्तावेज अदालत में पेश किए गए।
एक पुलिस अधिकारी के अनुसार, इन दस्तावेजों के सामने आने के बाद राजभर के मामले की सुनवाई दूसरे आरोपी से अलग कर दी गई। अब उसके जीवित मिलने से अदालत में प्रस्तुत दस्तावेजों की प्रामाणिकता और उन्हें जारी किए जाने की परिस्थितियों पर सवाल उठ रहे हैं।
गाजीपुर में कथित तौर पर रची गई मौत की कहानी
पुलिस की शुरुआती जांच के अनुसार, कथित घटनाक्रम मई 2025 में पड़ोसी जिले गाजीपुर में हुआ था। जांचकर्ताओं को संदेह है कि राजभर को बेहोश दिखाकर अस्पताल ले जाने का घटनाक्रम तैयार किया गया और इसके बाद अंतिम संस्कार का दृश्य रचा गया।
पुलिस का दावा है कि तस्वीरों में इस तरह बदलाव किए गए कि वे किसी वास्तविक अंतिम संस्कार की तस्वीरें प्रतीत हों। जांचकर्ताओं को आशंका है कि राजभर खुद तैयार की गई चिता पर लेटा था, जबकि बाद में उसकी जगह बकरी का शव जलाया गया, ताकि उसकी मौत की कहानी विश्वसनीय लगे।
इन तस्वीरों को अधिक वास्तविक दिखाने के लिए AI तकनीक का इस्तेमाल किए जाने का संदेह है। पुलिस अब तस्वीरों की जांच कर रही है, ताकि उनमें किए गए बदलावों और दिखाई देने वाले लोगों की पहचान की जा सके।

पूछताछ के दौरान राजभर ने कथित तौर पर बताया कि उसके संपर्क में रहने वाले दो डॉक्टरों ने उसे मुकदमे से बचने के लिए अपनी मौत का नाटक करने की सलाह दी थी। हालांकि, पुलिस ने इस दावे की पुष्टि नहीं की है और कहा है कि इसकी स्वतंत्र रूप से जांच की जाएगी।

पुलिस के अनुसार, राजभर पहले मुंबई में रह चुका है और वहां व्यापार तथा शेयर बाजार से संबंधित गतिविधियों में शामिल था। कथित तौर पर अपनी मौत का भ्रम पैदा करने के बाद उसके गाजीपुर और आजमगढ़ सहित अलग-अलग स्थानों पर जाने की जानकारी सामने आई है।
मऊ लौटने के बाद उसकी गिरफ्तारी संभव हुई। अब जांचकर्ता यह पता लगाने में जुटे हैं कि इस अवधि में वह कहां-कहां रहा और कथित रूप से मृत घोषित किए जाने के बाद उसने किस तरह अपनी गतिविधियां जारी रखीं।
जांच में यह भी स्पष्ट करना होगा कि मृत्यु प्रमाणपत्र हासिल करने में जानबूझकर गलत जानकारी दी गई थी या नहीं, किन लोगों ने कथित योजना में सहायता की और इन दस्तावेजों का हत्या के मुकदमे पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ा।
फिलहाल, मामला वर्ष 2016 की हत्या की सुनवाई से आगे बढ़कर कथित जालसाजी, फर्जी साक्ष्य तैयार करने और सरकारी रिकॉर्ड के दुरुपयोग की जांच तक पहुंच गया है। पुलिस के अनुसार, मामले की पड़ताल जारी है और आरोपों की पुष्टि न्यायिक प्रक्रिया के दौरान होगी।
