Kolkata Naked-Parade Case: Police Make Accused Walk in Underwear After Arrests

Kolkata: A disturbing case of alleged public humiliation and mob-style punishment in Kolkata has taken another turn after police personnel were seen escorting the accused through the streets in their underwear.

Videos circulating on social media show three men walking with ropes tied around their waists as police officers accompany them, while bystanders record the scene on their mobile phones.

The men were arrested on Monday in connection with an incident in which a teenage boy, his father and the boy’s friend were allegedly assaulted and paraded naked following a dispute over the teenager’s reported interaction with a 13-year-old girl.

The police action has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding both incidents, raising questions about public humiliation as a response to alleged wrongdoing.

The allegations against the arrested individuals are subject to investigation, and the police have invoked multiple criminal provisions in the case.

Dispute Over Teenager’s Interaction With Girl Led to Alleged Assault

According to police officials, the incident began on Sunday when the teenager met the girl in the company of his friend. The girl’s uncle allegedly spotted the boy kissing her and informed her father and another relative.

The girl’s father and uncle subsequently reached the location and allegedly took the teenager and his companions to their residence against their will. The group is accused of assaulting the boys before forcing the 18-year-old to summon his father.

A senior police officer said the situation escalated further when the father arrived. According to the officer, the alleged attackers assaulted him as well and threatened to shoot all three if they refused to remove their clothes.

The teenager, his father and the friend were then allegedly made to walk naked for around 50 metres along a lane outside the residence. The incident later drew widespread attention after footage of the public humiliation circulated online.

Police Register Multiple Charges Against Girl’s Relatives

The matter came to the attention of the police after the teenager’s father lodged a complaint. Investigators registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including allegations of attempted murder, voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and kidnapping.

Police arrested the girl’s parents and other relatives on Monday in connection with the case.

The investigation is expected to establish the precise roles of those accused and the circumstances in which the three victims were allegedly assaulted and paraded.

The arrests marked a significant development in a case that had generated widespread public attention over allegations of violence, coercion and humiliation.

Tension Rises After Video Goes Viral

The circulation of footage showing the teenager, his father and their companion being paraded naked reportedly triggered further unrest in the neighbourhood.

Some people allegedly attempted to vandalise the girl’s residence after the images spread across social media.

The incident illustrates how footage of alleged wrongdoing can rapidly intensify local tensions, potentially exposing families and neighbourhoods to further confrontation before the facts have been fully established.

Police action against those accused of the original assault has now been followed by videos showing the arrested men being marched through public streets in their underwear.

The circumstances and legal basis of this police action would need to be assessed separately from the allegations against the accused.

West Bengal Minister Promises Action Under Law

West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul had earlier condemned the alleged vigilantism and said those responsible would face action under the law.

She assured the public that no individual would be protected because of political connections or affiliations, stressing that the case would be dealt with strictly in accordance with legal procedures.

The case has brought renewed attention to the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands.

Even when allegations involve sensitive issues concerning minors, any response must follow lawful procedures rather than assault, threats or public humiliation.

As the investigation proceeds, the central questions remain: who was responsible for the alleged assault and forced naked parade, what evidence supports the charges, and whether every aspect of the police response complied with the law.
