Prayagraj SRN Hospital Standoff: Lawyers’ Protest Disrupts Treatment, Patient Dies
Prayagraj: A dispute between lawyers and medical professionals at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital in Prayagraj escalated into a major confrontation on Monday, with a prolonged road blockade disrupting healthcare services and traffic across the area.
The protest, organised to demand the arrest of doctors accused of assaulting advocate Sarvesh Shukla, continued for nearly seven hours, leaving hundreds of patients struggling to access treatment.
More than 1,500 patients reportedly returned without receiving medical attention, while scheduled surgical procedures had to be postponed.
The unrest also coincided with the death of 18-year-old Krishna Mishra, who was admitted to the hospital’s trauma centre.
His family alleged that negligence in treatment may have contributed to his death and said they would take up the matter with the Chief Minister. Police sent the body for post-mortem examination.
The confrontation stemmed from an incident on the night of October 22, when Shukla brought a patient to the hospital’s trauma centre.
According to the allegations, an argument over treatment subsequently turned violent, with doctors allegedly assaulting the advocate and his driver, Krishna Kumar Kesarwani.
The complainants have accused the alleged assailants of confining them in a room and beating them.
The allegations also include attempted strangulation, injuries caused by needles, and the snatching of a mobile phone and gold chain.
Shukla’s wife was allegedly assaulted as well. These claims have not been independently established.
Kotwali police registered a case against unidentified persons based on a complaint.
However, the absence of arrests four days after the reported incident angered members of the legal fraternity, prompting Monday’s blockade from the hospital entrance towards Mahatma Gandhi Marg.
Senior police officials, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the city, held several rounds of discussions with the protesting lawyers. The road blockade was eventually withdrawn at around 5 pm.
The advocates, however, warned that they would resume their agitation if concrete action was not taken by Tuesday afternoon.
Doctor Assault Allegation Triggers Counter-Protest
Tensions intensified further after reports emerged that Dr Vibhu Ranjan Mishra, a senior consultant in the hospital’s medicine department, had been assaulted during the lawyers’ demonstration.
Doctors rallied in response, and the injured physician was admitted to the trauma centre for treatment.
Security arrangements were strengthened within the hospital premises, and the gates were closed amid concerns over further confrontation.
The simultaneous unrest and restrictions added to the difficulties faced by patients and their attendants.
By evening, emergency services had yet to return fully to normal, raising concerns about the impact of the confrontation on people dependent on the government hospital for urgent medical care.
High Court Bar Association Seeks Chief Minister’s Intervention
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has taken up the matter with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging him to ensure strict action against those responsible for the alleged assault on the advocate.
In a letter signed by association president Dr C.P. Upadhyay and general secretary Santosh Kumar Mishra, the body described the reported incident as a serious matter requiring intervention.
The association’s account refers to October 23 as the date on which Shukla visited SRN Hospital with a family member seeking medical treatment.
According to the letter, the advocate and his driver were allegedly locked inside a room and severely beaten by hospital doctors.
The association noted that a police case had been registered and called for action against those found responsible.
The lawyers’ body also expressed concern that the episode had created apprehension among advocates and members of the public about seeking treatment at the hospital.
It criticised what it described as inappropriate conduct towards patients and their attendants and raised questions about the functioning of the hospital administration.
With both sides reporting alleged assaults and medical services affected by the confrontation, the incident has developed into a wider dispute over accountability, hospital security and the uninterrupted provision of healthcare.
The immediate focus remains on the police investigation, the demands for arrests and the restoration of normal services at SRN Hospital.
