Rudely shaken and angered over the rape and murder of their colleague in a Kolkata hospital, Allahabad doctors took out a massive protest march from SRN hospital upto Subhash Crossing in Civil Lines saturday evening.
Earlier they assembled at the SRN hospital campus before walking the 2km distance with placards and banners shouting slogans.
After reaching civil lines, doctors lit candles in memory of their colleague.
Lady doctors, interns, resident doctors joined the protest march in large numbers.
Never in the living memory doctors of this city had ever taken out such a big procession as was seen here this evening, said an old showroom owner in Civil Lines.
Every lady doctor, female medical student as well as junior and senior resident doctor expressed concern about their safety and security in this male dominated society.
“My establishment is nearly 40 years old and I had never seen so many men and women belonging to medical profession at one place like this, said another shop owner.
Amid the hustle and bustle of the busy civil lines doctors reiterated their demands.
Doctors have demanded enactment of a central law to protect doctors and other health workers from all types of atrocities.
All health care centres should be declared as special protected areas.
The National Medical Council should be empowered to implement strict rules related to the safety of all modern medical doctors and medical students working anywhere in India.
The victim doctor was on duty till late hours in the night. Since she was supposed to come on duty the next morning also, she decided to watch the Javelin throw of Neeraj Chopra at the Olympic games on the TV.
Sadly, in the morning she was found in a naked state with her legs 180 degrees apart. Her hip bone was broken.
Her parents’ came running after they were told that their daughter had committed suicide. Strangely, they were made to wait for three hours by the police before being allowed to see their daughter.
What they saw was a slap in the face of humanity, said the AMA President.
It is shocking that such cruelty was still going on against women in our society despite the fact that we have just celebrated 78 years of independence.
The incident reminds us of the brutality that was committed with Nirbhaya known as ‘Nirbhaya Kand’, said the doctors.
