India Rejects China’s Arunachal Naming Objection, Says Nothing Can Alter Its Sovereignty Claim
MEA reaffirms Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India after Beijing calls New Delhi’s naming of 27 border locations “illegal, null and void”
New Delhi: India has firmly rejected China’s latest objection to its move to officially identify 27 locations and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh by their standard names, with the Ministry of External Affairs reiterating that the northeastern state is an integral and inalienable part of the country.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal asserted on Tuesday after Beijing criticised the Indian move and dismissed the newly designated names as having no legal validity.
Responding to questions about China’s reaction, Jaiswal said India’s position on Arunachal Pradesh was unequivocal and that no statement from Beijing could alter what New Delhi regards as its established territorial position.
The exchange followed India’s decision last Friday to put standard names for 27 locations and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh on its official cartographic record.
The locations are situated in areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), making the move particularly significant in the context of the long-running India-China boundary dispute.
The latest Indian initiative is also being viewed against the backdrop of China’s repeated attempts in recent years to assign its own names to places in Arunachal Pradesh.
New Delhi has consistently rejected those renaming exercises, maintaining that they cannot alter the territorial status of places that India considers part of its sovereign territory.
Officials familiar with the latest move said putting the 27 locations on the Survey of India’s official map was intended to remove ambiguity in geographical documentation and reinforce India’s position in official cartographic records.
One of the locations included in the latest exercise is Longju, a border village that has been under Chinese control since 1959 but lies within India’s claimed boundary, according to the information supplied for the report.
The move therefore has significance beyond nomenclature. By recording the locations under their standard Indian names on an official map, New Delhi is seeking to ensure that its geographical and territorial position is formally reflected in government documentation.
Beijing, however, reacted sharply.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that China did not recognise what it described as the “so-called” Arunachal Pradesh and rejected India’s decision to replace names used by China with Indian standard names.
China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as “Zangnan” and maintains its own territorial claim over the region.
Guo said India’s latest action was “illegal, null and void” and argued that changing names could not alter China’s position on the territory.
The latest exchange adds another layer to the long-running disagreement between the two countries over their disputed boundary.
Both sides have sought to manage tensions along the LAC while maintaining sharply different positions on territorial claims.
For New Delhi, the official naming exercise is part of its broader effort to establish consistency in maps and government records concerning Arunachal Pradesh.
For Beijing, the move represents an unacceptable assertion by India over territory China claims.
The dispute over names has become an increasingly visible component of the wider territorial contest.
China has previously announced its own sets of names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, while India has repeatedly said that such measures have no bearing on sovereignty.
The latest Indian action marks a further effort to counter that practice through official Indian cartography, rather than leaving competing names in government records.
Tuesday’s statement from the MEA makes clear that New Delhi has no intention of allowing the naming dispute to create ambiguity over its stated position on Arunachal Pradesh.
At the same time, the sharp Chinese response shows that the issue remains closely linked to the broader and unresolved India-China boundary dispute, where questions of maps, place names and territorial claims continue to carry considerable diplomatic significance.
