NUWAKOT: The school day in Nuwakot could have ended in catastrophe.
Instead, thousands of footsteps moved away from danger after the headteacher of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School made a decision that left no room for hesitation.
Rajendra Dawadi had received several alerts in quick succession about the situation upstream.
Rather than treating them as another precautionary warning, he decided that keeping children in class was no longer worth the risk.
All 1,643 students were moved towards higher ground.
What happened next provided a chilling indication of how close the school may have come to disaster.
Floodwater surged through the surrounding area and swallowed a hostel building situated only about 100 metres from the river.
Dawadi later reflected that the margin between safety and tragedy could have been measured in minutes.
He believed a delay of roughly 10 minutes might have left the students and school staff directly exposed to the advancing flood.
The warnings had become increasingly difficult to ignore.
One of them reported that water had already swept through Betrawati, a settlement further upstream.
That information gave the headteacher a crucial clue about the speed at which the flood was moving towards communities downstream.
For the students, the evacuation was initially a hurried interruption to an ordinary school day.
In retrospect, it became something far more consequential.
Sixteen-year-old Yunisha was among those who escaped. She said she and her friends reached safety only moments before the landscape around them changed.
The nearby bazaar was subsequently overwhelmed by the floodwaters, she recalled.
The episode has become particularly striking because it demonstrates the value of acting before a disaster is visible at the point of impact.
By the time floodwater settles, there may be little opportunity left for a large-scale evacuation.
That danger has been starkly demonstrated across Nepal following the catastrophic flooding triggered by a glacier collapse.
Mountain communities have faced torrents capable of sweeping away buildings, roads and other infrastructure within a very short period.
The human toll has been severe. At least 781 people have died in Nepal, while more than 2,500 remain missing amid continuing rescue operations.
The destruction has also affected a much wider population.
Estimates indicate that more than 90,000 people could have been affected, while rescue teams continue to work in areas where communications and access have been disrupted.
Against that backdrop, Dawadi’s decision stands out not because it stopped the flood, but because it put distance between the flood and the people under his care before the full danger became apparent.
There was no guarantee that the warnings would translate into a disaster at the school.
But waiting for certainty could have cost precious time.
In the end, the decision to evacuate gave the students something the flood could not take away: a head start towards safety.

लेकिन प्रधानाचार्य राजेंद्र दवाड़ी ने हालात को अलग नजर से देखा।
उन्हें लगातार ऐसी सूचनाएं मिल रही थीं जो इशारा कर रही थीं कि ऊपर के इलाकों में पानी तेजी से बढ़ रहा है।
उन्होंने बच्चों को स्कूल में रोकने के बजाय उन्हें सुरक्षित ऊंचाई वाले स्थान की ओर भेजने का फैसला किया।
इस निर्णय के बाद त्रिभुवन त्रिशूली सेकेंडरी स्कूल के सभी 1,643 छात्रों को वहां से निकाल दिया गया।
उस वक्त यह कदम शायद जरूरत से ज्यादा सावधानी जैसा लग सकता था, लेकिन कुछ ही समय बाद आसपास जो हुआ उसने फैसले की गंभीरता साफ कर दी।
नदी के करीब स्थित एक छात्रावास की इमारत बाढ़ के तेज पानी की चपेट में आ गई। यह भवन नदी से लगभग 100 मीटर की दूरी पर था।
पानी की रफ्तार और उसकी विनाशकारी ताकत ने दिखा दिया कि स्कूल परिसर में मौजूद बच्चों के लिए जोखिम कितना बड़ा हो सकता था।
दवाड़ी के सामने उस समय कोई पक्की गारंटी नहीं थी कि बाढ़ स्कूल तक पहुंचेगी ही।
उनके पास केवल तेजी से बिगड़ते हालात और लगातार मिल रही चेतावनियां थीं। फिर भी उन्होंने इंतजार करना उचित नहीं समझा।
ऊपरी क्षेत्र की बेत्रावती बस्ती से पानी बह जाने की खबर ने स्थिति को निर्णायक बना दिया।
इससे पता चल रहा था कि बाढ़ केवल दूर के इलाके की समस्या नहीं रह गई है और उसका असर नीचे की ओर बसे क्षेत्रों तक पहुंच सकता है।
बाद में दवाड़ी ने अंदाजा लगाया कि अगर निकासी में करीब 10 मिनट की और देरी हो जाती तो परिणाम बेहद भयावह हो सकते थे।
उस समय स्कूल में मौजूद बच्चों और कर्मचारियों के पास सुरक्षित निकलने के लिए शायद पर्याप्त समय नहीं बचता।
16 वर्षीय युनिशा भी उन छात्रों में थीं जिन्हें सुरक्षित स्थान तक पहुंचाया गया। उन्होंने बताया कि वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ महज कुछ क्षण के अंतर से बचीं।
उनके सामने ही आसपास का बाजार पानी के तेज बहाव में बह गया।
युनिशा की आपबीती इस आपदा की रफ्तार को समझने के लिए काफी है।
जिस जगह पर लोग कुछ देर पहले सामान्य गतिविधियों में व्यस्त थे, वहां अचानक बाढ़ का पानी और मलबा विनाश लेकर पहुंच गया।
नुवाकोट की यह घटना नेपाल में आई व्यापक आपदा के बीच सामने आई है।
ग्लेशियर से जुड़ी घटना के बाद अचानक आई बाढ़ ने हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में भारी तबाही मचाई।
तेज बहाव अपने साथ चट्टान, मिट्टी और मलबा लेकर आया, जिससे कई इलाकों में जनजीवन बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ।
