Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival in Delhi for the BRICS summit has generated more than the usual diplomatic attention.
Before the Chinese leader reached the capital, vehicles believed to be part of his official convoy were seen being moved under large black covers, creating an unusual spectacle on Delhi’s roads and triggering widespread discussion on social media.
Photographs and videos of the concealed vehicles quickly circulated online, with many wondering what lay beneath the coverings.
The mystery largely centres on the Hongqi N701, a highly protected limousine associated with Xi and rarely seen in detail because of the secrecy surrounding its design and security arrangements.
The movement of a visiting leader’s official vehicles ahead of his arrival is not unusual.
Heads of state frequently have specially equipped cars transported separately to the destination country so that they are ready for use as soon as the official programme begins.
The extensive coverings serve several practical purposes.
Presidential vehicles can be exposed to dust, rain, sunlight and possible damage while being shifted between aircraft, airport facilities and transport carriers.
Keeping them covered helps protect the vehicles during these movements and ensures that they remain in suitable condition for official engagements.
Security is another important consideration.
For vehicles designed specifically to protect national leaders, limiting unnecessary visibility during transportation can reduce public exposure and prevent detailed photographs of the cars from circulating before they are deployed.
In that sense, the black coverings seen in Delhi appear to be part of a planned logistical and security arrangement rather than something prompted by an incident following Xi’s arrival.
The curiosity, however, is understandable because the vehicle believed to be beneath those covers is far from an ordinary luxury car.
What makes Xi Jinping’s Hongqi N701 special?
The Hongqi N701 is a specially built presidential limousine from China’s luxury carmaker Hongqi, a name that means “Red Flag”.
Unlike conventional premium sedans sold to customers, the N701 is understood to have been created for China’s highest-ranking leadership, with much of its engineering and protection package remaining undisclosed.
The imposing limousine is reported to measure approximately 5.5 metres in length, giving it a particularly commanding presence.
Its exterior carries several styling cues associated with Hongqi, most notably the large front grille and the marque’s red-flag insignia.
Protection is believed to be at the heart of the N701’s design. Reports have described features such as reinforced body construction, bullet-resistant glazing and specially protected wheels and tyres.
There have also been claims that the limousine may provide protection from explosive and chemical threats.
However, such details have not been comprehensively confirmed by Hongqi and should therefore be treated as reported specifications rather than official facts.
The powertrain has also been the subject of speculation.
Reports have linked the N701 to a 6.0-litre V12 engine developing approximately 408 horsepower.
The Chinese manufacturer has not publicly released a complete set of technical specifications, leaving considerable uncertainty around the vehicle’s actual capabilities.
That deliberate lack of information has made the N701 a subject of fascination among automobile enthusiasts as well as observers interested in presidential security.
Hongqi N701 has travelled abroad with Xi.
The Delhi appearance is not the limousine’s first international assignment.
The N701 has previously accompanied Xi during overseas engagements, including trips involving Russia, the United States, Hong Kong and Egypt.
Whenever it appears outside China, the vehicle tends to attract attention because of its imposing proportions and the limited information available about its protective systems.
Its use abroad also highlights Beijing’s preference for providing its president with a domestically manufactured state limousine rather than relying on a foreign luxury automobile.
Hongqi has a particularly long-standing relationship with China’s political establishment.
Founded in 1958, the brand has traditionally been associated with the country’s leadership.
Although it has developed into a wider luxury automobile manufacturer over the years, its connection with official and state vehicles remains an important part of its identity.
Putin brings Russia’s Aurus Senat to Delhi.
Xi’s Hongqi is not the only high-security presidential car drawing attention around the BRICS summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also brought his own specially developed state limousine, the Aurus Senat, to the Indian capital.
The Russian-made armoured vehicle has previously attracted considerable interest during Putin’s visits to India.
During his latest trip, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen travelling alongside Putin in the Russian president’s protected limousine, underlining the prominence given to secure state transport during high-level diplomatic engagements.
With both Chinese and Russian leaders relying on purpose-built domestic presidential vehicles, the BRICS summit has offered an unusual glimpse into the highly specialised world of state limousines—where appearance, protection, logistics and secrecy all play a central role.

BRICS शिखर सम्मेलन के दौरान दिल्ली में चर्चा पाने वाली यह अकेली हाई-सिक्योरिटी राष्ट्रपति कार नहीं है। रूस के राष्ट्रपति व्लादिमीर पुतिन भी अपनी विशेष रूप से तैयार की गई Aurus Senat को भारत लाए हैं।
पुतिन की भारत यात्राओं के दौरान रूसी राष्ट्रपति की यह बख्तरबंद लिमोजिन पहले भी आकर्षण का केंद्र रही है।
उनकी हालिया यात्रा में प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को पुतिन के साथ इसी सुरक्षित राष्ट्रपति कार में यात्रा करते हुए देखा गया था।
BRICS सम्मेलन ने इस तरह दुनिया के दो प्रमुख नेताओं की घरेलू स्तर पर विकसित विशेष राष्ट्रपति कारों को एक साथ चर्चा में ला दिया है।
