Iran-UAE Media Encounter in Delhi Mirrors a Sudden Diplomatic Shift at BRICS Summit

Journalists from the two countries kept their distance as leaders reached a rare understanding, underscoring the contrast between political tensions and professional ties.

For journalists covering the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, an unexpected diplomatic development unfolded not only at the leadership level but also inside the media centre.

Representatives of the Iranian and Emirati press found themselves sharing the same workspace at Bharat Mandapam even as their governments remained divided over the conflict in West Asia.

The atmosphere changed after UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the summit.

The encounter came as India helped secure consensus on the BRICS joint declaration, which had been complicated by differences between Tehran and Abu Dhabi.

The significance of the meeting was not lost on journalists from either side.

The UAE and Iran have been on opposing sides of the regional confrontation, with Emirati cities having faced Iranian strikes and Tehran accusing the UAE of acting as a US proxy.

Yet the interaction between the two media contingents presented a markedly different picture.

Journalists from both countries worked in the same room without engaging with one another, largely remaining on separate sides of the International Media Centre.

The UAE delegation was the larger of the two, with roughly 20 people. It included teams from state-owned Abu Dhabi TV, journalists from other television channels and reporters representing newspapers.

The Iranian contingent was smaller and included journalists from the state-run IRNA news agency along with representatives of other media organisations.

One UAE journalist, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the political differences between the two countries did not necessarily translate into hostility among journalists.

She said the people around her had asked how she felt about working alongside Iranian colleagues, but stressed that journalists remained professionals carrying out their respective assignments.

In her view, political leaders had their responsibilities while reporters had theirs, and there was no inherent problem between people at a personal level.

Another Emirati journalist struck a similarly conciliatory note, saying he would have no hesitation in exchanging greetings or speaking with an Iranian colleague who approached him.

He added, however, that his delegation was in India primarily to report on the UAE’s relationship with India.

Politics Divides, Profession Connects

The cautious interaction among journalists stood in contrast to the diplomatic friction that had surrounded the BRICS negotiations.

For months, Tehran and Abu Dhabi had differed over how the West Asia conflict should be described in the summit’s final document.

Reaching language acceptable to both sides was therefore a sensitive part of the negotiations.

India ultimately managed to bring the two positions together in the joint declaration adopted on Saturday.

The subsequent one-on-one meeting between the Iranian president and the UAE Crown Prince added another notable dimension to the diplomatic breakthrough.

The Delhi summit thus produced an unusual juxtaposition: political representatives who had been separated by deep disagreements were able to find common ground, while journalists from the two countries quietly shared the same professional space.

A Wider International Media Presence

The media centre itself reflected the international scale of the BRICS gathering. More than 1,000 journalists were present on Saturday, including more than 100 reporters and media professionals who had travelled from BRICS member countries such as China, Russia and South Africa.

The coverage extended beyond traditional news organisations.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs had also hosted social media influencers from BRICS countries for more than a week as part of the summit-related programme.

The visiting creators were taken to destinations including Agra and Mumbai, allowing them to produce content about India alongside their coverage of the summit.

For the Iranian and Emirati journalists, however, the most striking moment of the gathering may have been much closer to home: watching their countries’ senior leaders meet while they themselves occupied the same media room, albeit cautiously and largely apart.

The episode offered a glimpse of how swiftly diplomatic circumstances can change.

Only months of tension had separated Tehran and Abu Dhabi, yet a meeting in New Delhi opened a door that had remained largely closed during the regional crisis.
