New Delhi: A fresh political confrontation has erupted between the BJP and the Congress over the rendition of Vande Mataram, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah accusing the opposition party of placing vote-bank politics above national sentiment and the Congress dismissing the charge as an attempt to create a manufactured controversy.
The dispute intensified after the Congress Working Committee decided to continue following a 1937 party resolution under which only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram are sung at Congress functions.
In a strongly worded statement on X on Thursday, Shah described the decision as “anti-national” and alleged that the Congress was openly defying the legal position adopted by the Narendra Modi government on the complete rendition of the national song at government programmes.
The Home Minister also drew a direct link between the Congress decision of 1937 and the political developments that preceded India’s Partition a decade later.
According to Shah, the decision to limit the rendition of the song had been taken as part of what he described as minority appeasement and had contributed to the circumstances in which the two-nation theory gained greater political ground.
Shah said the Modi government had used the 150th anniversary year of Vande Mataram to address what he termed a historical error.
He said the government had decided that the song would be rendered in its entirety at official programmes and had provided legal backing for that decision.
By choosing to retain its earlier position, Shah alleged, the Congress had once again demonstrated an approach centred on appeasement.
He further accused the opposition party of disrespecting the legacy of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the author of Vande Mataram, as well as freedom fighters who invoked the song during India’s independence movement.
Shah also urged people not to allow the issue to create fresh divisions, saying the country had already paid a heavy price in the past for political decisions that encouraged communal separation.
The Congress, however, rejected the allegations and hit back at the BJP.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh termed Shah’s remarks an example of “fake and untruthful nationalism”.
He said the controversy was being deliberately amplified and insisted that the legal position did not prevent political parties from following the original practice of singing the first two stanzas.
Ramesh said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had already explained the party’s stand on Vande Mataram and described the dispute as a non-issue.
According to him, the BJP was attempting to divert public attention from matters concerning students and other issues affecting people.
The controversy could also extend to states governed by the Congress.
There are indications that some Congress-led states, including Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Karnataka, may choose to continue with the original two-stanza rendition rather than adopt the full version.
When asked whether the Congress leadership had formally directed its chief ministers to follow that approach, Ramesh declined to offer details and said the developments would become clear in due course.
The exchange has added another emotionally charged issue to the growing political battle between the BJP and the Congress, with both parties presenting sharply different interpretations of the historical, legal and political questions surrounding one of India’s most revered national songs.

नई दिल्ली: राष्ट्रीय गीत वंदे मातरम् के गायन को लेकर भाजपा और कांग्रेस के बीच राजनीतिक टकराव तेज हो गया है।
केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह ने कांग्रेस के उस फैसले पर कड़ा हमला किया है, जिसके तहत पार्टी अपने कार्यक्रमों में वंदे मातरम् के केवल पहले दो पद गाने की परंपरा को जारी रखेगी।
कांग्रेस ने शाह के आरोपों को खारिज करते हुए कहा कि भाजपा इस मुद्दे को राजनीतिक विवाद में बदलकर लोगों के वास्तविक सवालों से ध्यान हटाना चाहती है।
यह विवाद कांग्रेस कार्यसमिति के उस निर्णय के बाद उभरा, जिसमें पार्टी ने अपने 1937 के प्रस्ताव के अनुरूप वंदे मातरम् के केवल पहले दो पदों के गायन की व्यवस्था को बरकरार रखने का फैसला किया।
गृह मंत्री अमित शाह ने गुरुवार को सोशल मीडिया मंच X पर कांग्रेस के निर्णय की कड़ी आलोचना की।
उन्होंने इसे राष्ट्रहित के विरुद्ध बताया और आरोप लगाया कि पार्टी का फैसला नरेंद्र मोदी सरकार द्वारा वंदे मातरम् के पूर्ण गायन को लेकर अपनाई गई व्यवस्था के विपरीत है।
शाह ने कांग्रेस के 1937 के फैसले को देश के विभाजन से पहले के राजनीतिक घटनाक्रमों से भी जोड़ा।
उनका आरोप था कि उस समय वंदे मातरम् के गायन को सीमित करने का फैसला मुस्लिम तुष्टिकरण की राजनीति के तहत किया गया था और इससे उन राजनीतिक परिस्थितियों को बल मिला, जिनमें बाद के वर्षों में द्वि-राष्ट्र सिद्धांत मजबूत हुआ।
गृह मंत्री ने कहा कि वंदे मातरम् के 150वें वर्ष में मोदी सरकार ने इस मुद्दे पर एक ऐतिहासिक भूल को सुधारने का निर्णय लिया।
उनके अनुसार, सरकार ने आधिकारिक कार्यक्रमों में राष्ट्रीय गीत को पूर्ण रूप से गाने का फैसला किया और इसे कानूनी आधार भी दिया गया।
शाह ने आरोप लगाया कि कांग्रेस ने अपने पुराने निर्णय को बनाए रखकर एक बार फिर तुष्टिकरण की राजनीति को प्राथमिकता दी है।
उन्होंने कांग्रेस पर बंकिम चंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय की अमर रचना के साथ-साथ उन स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों की भावना का अपमान करने का आरोप भी लगाया, जिन्होंने आजादी के संघर्ष के दौरान वंदे मातरम् का उद्घोष किया था।
शाह ने लोगों से इस मुद्दे पर किसी भी तरह के विभाजन से बचने की अपील की और कहा कि देश अतीत में ऐसे राजनीतिक निर्णयों के गंभीर परिणाम भुगत चुका है।
कांग्रेस ने इन आरोपों का जोरदार जवाब दिया। पार्टी के वरिष्ठ नेता जयराम रमेश ने अमित शाह के बयान को “फर्जी और असत्य राष्ट्रवाद” करार दिया।
रमेश ने कहा कि कानून राजनीतिक दलों को वंदे मातरम् के मूल रूप में केवल शुरुआती दो पद गाने से नहीं रोकता।
उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खरगे पहले ही पार्टी की स्थिति स्पष्ट कर चुके हैं और इस विवाद को अनावश्यक रूप से बड़ा बनाया जा रहा है।
कांग्रेस नेता ने आरोप लगाया कि भाजपा इस बहस के जरिए छात्रों से जुड़े सवालों और आम लोगों की समस्याओं जैसे मुद्दों से ध्यान हटाने की कोशिश कर रही है।
उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस अपने राजनीतिक विमर्श को जनहित के मुद्दों पर केंद्रित रखेगी।
इस विवाद का असर कांग्रेस शासित राज्यों तक पहुंचने की संभावना भी दिखाई दे रही है।
संकेत हैं कि हिमाचल प्रदेश, तेलंगाना, केरल और कर्नाटक जैसे राज्यों में भी वंदे मातरम् के मूल दो-पद वाले संस्करण को अपनाया जा सकता है।
जब जयराम रमेश से पूछा गया कि क्या कांग्रेस नेतृत्व ने अपने मुख्यमंत्रियों को इस संबंध में कोई औपचारिक निर्देश दिया है, तो उन्होंने तत्काल स्पष्ट जवाब देने से परहेज करते हुए कहा कि आगे की स्थिति समय के साथ सामने आ जाएगी।
वंदे मातरम् को लेकर शुरू हुई यह बहस अब भाजपा और कांग्रेस के बीच एक और बड़ा राजनीतिक मुद्दा बनती दिखाई दे रही है।
एक ओर भाजपा इसे राष्ट्रवाद और ऐतिहासिक विरासत से जोड़ रही है, वहीं कांग्रेस इसे राजनीतिक ध्रुवीकरण और असली जनसमस्याओं से ध्यान हटाने की रणनीति बता रही है।
