Amritsar Airport Operations Halted After Drone Sightings, Seven Flights Diverted
Airfield activity was suspended for over an hour on Sunday night after the IAF alerted ATC to drones; five diverted flights subsequently returned to Amritsar
Amritsar: A drone alert over Amritsar airport disrupted flight operations on Sunday night, with authorities temporarily halting aircraft movements and diverting seven incoming flights to Delhi and Chandigarh, officials familiar with the incident said.
The disruption began at about 9.50 pm after the Indian Air Force alerted Air Traffic Control about drones being detected in the vicinity of the airfield.
As a precautionary measure, landing operations were stopped while officials assessed whether the reported activity posed any danger to aircraft.
The decision was taken under the established procedure followed in cases involving suspected drone activity.
A committee was constituted to evaluate the situation before airport operations were allowed to continue.
By the time the precautionary closure came into effect, several aircraft were already in holding patterns awaiting permission to land.
Two were subsequently sent to Chandigarh, while five were redirected to Delhi, according to officials.
The diverted flights included services operated by Air India, IndiGo and Air India Express.
Five of the seven aircraft later made their way back to Amritsar after the airport was reopened.
Officials said the situation was reassessed around 11 pm after there were no further reports or sightings of drones around the airport.
Following the review, the airfield was cleared for normal operations at approximately 11.15 pm.
The episode caused uncertainty for passengers, particularly those travelling on international services.
One passenger travelling from Dubai to Amritsar described on X how the aircraft remained airborne before being redirected to Delhi.
The passenger said the flight was expected to return to Amritsar once the airport resumed operations and praised the Air India Express crew for keeping travellers informed and calm during the disruption.
An airline official said the aircraft involved had sufficient fuel to remain in a holding pattern for more than an hour.
Air India Express flight IX 138, which had been scheduled to reach Amritsar at 10.40 pm, was among the services affected.
The aircraft was diverted to Delhi before subsequently returning to Amritsar.
The incident affected one of the airport’s important international links.
The Dubai-Amritsar sector is among the busiest routes served by the airport, which also maintains regular connectivity with major Indian cities including Delhi and Mumbai.
No further drone activity was reported around the airport by the time authorities conducted their review, allowing flight operations to resume later in the night.

अमृतसर: अमृतसर एयरपोर्ट के ऊपर ड्रोन गतिविधि की सूचना मिलने के बाद रविवार रात हवाई यातायात प्रभावित हो गया।
सुरक्षा एहतियात के तौर पर एयरपोर्ट पर कुछ समय के लिए उड़ान संचालन रोक दिया गया, जिसके चलते लैंडिंग का इंतजार कर रही सात उड़ानों को दिल्ली और चंडीगढ़ की ओर मोड़ना पड़ा।
मामले से परिचित अधिकारियों के अनुसार भारतीय वायुसेना ने एयर ट्रैफिक कंट्रोल को एयरफील्ड के आसपास ड्रोन देखे जाने की जानकारी दी थी।
इसके बाद करीब 9:50 बजे विमान संचालन अस्थायी रूप से रोक दिया गया।
उस समय कई विमान अमृतसर में उतरने के लिए एयरपोर्ट के आसपास होल्डिंग पैटर्न में थे।
संचालन रुकने के बाद इनमें से दो उड़ानों को चंडीगढ़ भेजा गया, जबकि पांच विमानों ने दिल्ली का रुख किया।
दिल्ली एयरपोर्ट से जुड़े एक अधिकारी के अनुसार डायवर्ट की गई उड़ानों में एयर इंडिया की दो, इंडिगो की दो और एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस की एक उड़ान शामिल थी।
बाद में इनमें से पांच विमान अमृतसर वापस लौट गए।
ड्रोन देखे जाने की घटनाओं से निपटने के लिए निर्धारित मानक प्रक्रिया के तहत स्थिति का आकलन करने वाली एक समिति बनाई गई।
समिति ने यह जांचने के बाद कि ड्रोन गतिविधि से विमानों के संचालन को संभावित खतरा हो सकता है या नहीं, एहतियाती तौर पर एयरपोर्ट बंद रखने का फैसला किया।
करीब 11 बजे स्थिति की दोबारा समीक्षा की गई।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक उस समय तक एयरपोर्ट के आसपास किसी नए ड्रोन की सूचना नहीं मिली थी।
इसके बाद लगभग 11:15 बजे एयरपोर्ट को दोबारा उड़ान संचालन के लिए खोलने की मंजूरी दे दी गई।
इस दौरान यात्रियों को भी काफी परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा। दुबई से अमृतसर जा रहे एक यात्री ने सोशल मीडिया मंच X पर बताया कि उनकी उड़ान कुछ समय तक आसमान में चक्कर लगाती रही और अंततः उसे दिल्ली उतारना पड़ा।
यात्री ने कहा कि एयरपोर्ट खुलने के बाद उसी विमान के अमृतसर लौटने की जानकारी दी गई थी।
यात्री ने एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस के चालक दल की भी प्रशंसा की। उसके अनुसार अनिश्चितता की स्थिति के बावजूद क्रू ने यात्रियों को लगातार जानकारी दी और पूरे घटनाक्रम को शांतिपूर्वक संभाला।
एयरलाइन के एक अधिकारी ने बताया कि प्रभावित विमान के पास एक घंटे से अधिक समय तक हवा में होल्ड करने के लिए पर्याप्त ईंधन था।
एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस की उड़ान IX 138 को रात 10:40 बजे अमृतसर पहुंचना था, लेकिन परिस्थितियों के कारण उसे दिल्ली डायवर्ट किया गया। बाद में यह विमान अमृतसर लौट आया।
दुबई-अमृतसर हवाई मार्ग एयरपोर्ट के प्रमुख और व्यस्त अंतरराष्ट्रीय रूट्स में शामिल है।
अमृतसर से दुबई और अन्य प्रमुख गंतव्यों के अलावा दिल्ली तथा मुंबई के लिए भी नियमित उड़ान सेवाएं संचालित होती हैं।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार दोबारा समीक्षा के समय एयरपोर्ट के आसपास ड्रोन गतिविधि की कोई नई सूचना नहीं थी। इसके बाद रात में हवाई सेवाएं फिर से शुरू कर दी गईं।
