AMU Student Arrested Over Alleged Dating App Blackmail Racket Targeting Young Men
Police say objectionable videos of 10 other men were recovered from accused’s phone; two complaints have been registered in Aligarh.
A police investigation into an alleged blackmail case involving a 19-year-old man at Aligarh Muslim University has widened, with investigators claiming to have uncovered a possible racket that allegedly targeted young men through dating and location-based applications.
The investigation began after the 19-year-old approached police and alleged that he had been assaulted inside a hostel room and subsequently threatened with the circulation of an objectionable video.
During the probe, investigators came across another complaint with similar allegations, prompting them to examine whether the incidents were connected.
Police have arrested Shahzil Shan Khan, a third-year Bachelor of Business Administration student at AMU.
Investigators allege that he was associated with a group that used dating and geolocation-based apps to identify potential victims, arrange meetings and allegedly record them without their consent for subsequent blackmail.
According to police, the investigation took a significant turn after another young man in his 20s contacted them with allegations resembling those made in the first complaint.
Authorities subsequently said they recovered objectionable videos involving 10 other young men from Khan’s mobile phone.
Two FIRs have been registered so far. The first was filed on Thursday at Civil Lines police station by the son of an AMU employee.
The second complaint was registered at Bannadevi police station by a local resident. Both complainants are reportedly in their 20s.
Police have invoked provisions relating to criminal conspiracy, voluntarily causing hurt, kidnapping or abduction for murder or ransom, extortion and criminal intimidation in the cases.
Investigators have also claimed that the alleged operation involved at least three other individuals, one of whom is a former AMU student.
Police said efforts were underway to locate and question the three additional suspects.
Aligarh Circle Officer Sarvam Singh said on Saturday that Khan had been presented before a court, which granted him bail.
Police are continuing their search for the other individuals allegedly linked to the case.
Authorities said that, apart from the two complainants, no other person whose video was allegedly recovered from the accused’s phone has so far formally approached the police.
Investigators are nevertheless examining the material recovered from the device to determine the extent of the alleged network.
Police further alleged that the two complainants were forced to pay ₹10,000 and ₹60,000, respectively, after being threatened with the release of their objectionable videos.
Investigators suspect that the alleged group searched dating and location-based platforms for potential targets within an area extending up to 50 kilometres, before arranging meetings with them.
The visitors were allegedly taken to a hostel room, where the videos were recorded and later allegedly used as leverage for extortion, police said.
As the investigation continues, police are examining the accused’s mobile devices and digital trail, including dating application accounts, conversations and financial transactions.
The scrutiny is expected to help investigators establish how many people may have been targeted and whether others were involved in the alleged racket.

अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय (AMU) में एक 19 वर्षीय युवक की शिकायत से शुरू हुई पुलिस जांच अब कथित ब्लैकमेलिंग नेटवर्क तक पहुंचती नजर आ रही है।
पुलिस का दावा है कि डेटिंग और लोकेशन आधारित ऐप के जरिए युवकों को निशाना बनाने वाले एक कथित गिरोह के बारे में महत्वपूर्ण सुराग मिले हैं।
मामला उस समय सामने आया जब 19 वर्षीय युवक ने पुलिस से शिकायत कर आरोप लगाया कि उसके साथ हॉस्टल के एक कमरे में मारपीट की गई और बाद में उसका आपत्तिजनक वीडियो सार्वजनिक करने की धमकी देकर उसे ब्लैकमेल किया गया।
जांच के दौरान पुलिस के सामने इसी तरह की शिकायत लेकर एक और युवक पहुंचा, जिसके बाद दोनों मामलों के बीच संभावित संबंधों की पड़ताल शुरू की गई।
पुलिस ने मामले में AMU के बीबीए के तीसरे वर्ष के छात्र शाहजिल शान खान को गिरफ्तार किया है।
जांच एजेंसियों का आरोप है कि वह ऐसे समूह से जुड़ा था जो डेटिंग और जियो-लोकेशन आधारित ऐप पर युवकों की तलाश करता था, उनसे मुलाकात तय करता था और कथित तौर पर उनके वीडियो बनाकर बाद में पैसे की मांग करता था।
जांच के दौरान एक अन्य युवक ने भी पुलिस से संपर्क किया और पहले मामले से मिलते-जुलते आरोप लगाए।
इसके बाद पुलिस ने आरोपी के मोबाइल फोन की जांच की। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि डिवाइस में 10 अन्य युवकों के आपत्तिजनक वीडियो मिले हैं।
पुलिस के अनुसार, अब तक इस मामले में दो प्राथमिकी दर्ज की गई हैं। पहली FIR गुरुवार को सिविल लाइंस थाने में AMU कर्मचारी के बेटे की शिकायत पर दर्ज हुई।
दूसरी प्राथमिकी बन्नादेवी थाने में एक स्थानीय निवासी ने दर्ज कराई। दोनों शिकायतकर्ता 20 वर्ष से अधिक आयु के बताए जा रहे हैं।
मामलों में पुलिस ने आपराधिक साजिश, स्वेच्छा से चोट पहुंचाने, हत्या या फिरौती के लिए अपहरण, जबरन वसूली और आपराधिक धमकी से संबंधित धाराएं लगाई हैं।
जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने कथित गिरोह में तीन अन्य लोगों के शामिल होने की भी बात कही है। इनमें AMU का एक पूर्व छात्र भी शामिल बताया गया है। पुलिस अब इन तीनों संदिग्धों की तलाश कर रही है।
अलीगढ़ के सर्किल ऑफिसर सर्वम सिंह ने शनिवार को बताया कि शाहजिल शान को अदालत में पेश किया गया था, जहां से उसे जमानत मिल गई। पुलिस का कहना है कि मामले में अन्य संदिग्धों तक पहुंचने के लिए जांच जारी है।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, आरोपी के मोबाइल से जिन 10 अन्य युवकों से जुड़े वीडियो मिलने की बात सामने आई है, उनमें से अभी किसी ने औपचारिक शिकायत दर्ज नहीं कराई है।
फिलहाल दो शिकायतकर्ताओं के आरोपों के आधार पर जांच आगे बढ़ाई जा रही है और बरामद डिजिटल सामग्री की भी पड़ताल की जा रही है।
जांचकर्ताओं का आरोप है कि दोनों शिकायतकर्ताओं से कथित तौर पर 10 हजार रुपये और 60 हजार रुपये की रकम वसूली गई। पुलिस के अनुसार, उन्हें उनके आपत्तिजनक वीडियो सार्वजनिक करने की धमकी दी गई थी।
पुलिस का कहना है कि कथित गिरोह डेटिंग और जियो-लोकेशन ऐप के जरिए करीब 50 किलोमीटर के दायरे में संभावित युवकों की तलाश करता था।
इसके बाद उनसे मुलाकात तय की जाती थी। जांच एजेंसियों को संदेह है कि मुलाकात के दौरान वीडियो तैयार किए जाते थे और बाद में कथित तौर पर उन्हीं का इस्तेमाल पैसे ऐंठने के लिए किया जाता था।
फिलहाल पुलिस आरोपी के मोबाइल फोन, डेटिंग ऐप से जुड़े खातों, चैट और डिजिटल लेन-देन की जांच कर रही है। इन डिजिटल साक्ष्यों के जरिए जांचकर्ता यह पता लगाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि कथित नेटवर्क का दायरा कितना बड़ा था और इसमें कितने लोग शामिल हो सकते हैं।
