Asian Games 2026: India Seal Women’s Cricket Gold After 147-Run Rout of Sri Lanka

A record 216/3 and a devastating bowling display deliver India’s first gold of the Games in the women’s cricket final.

India did not leave the Asian Games women’s cricket final to chance.

A commanding batting display followed by a ruthless bowling performance gave Harmanpreet Kaur’s side a 147-run victory over Sri Lanka and delivered India’s first gold medal of the 2026 Games.

The scale of the victory was evident long before the result was officially settled. India put 216 runs on the board and then reduced Sri Lanka to 69, completing one of the most one-sided finals of the tournament.

The triumph also continued India’s dominance over Sri Lanka in recent major finals.

The two sides had met in the gold-medal match at Hangzhou in 2023, with India winning there as well.

The Indian team subsequently prevailed against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final and has now repeated that success on the Asian Games stage.

India’s medal collection has consequently moved to seven, including five medals from shooting and a bronze in MMA.

A total Sri Lanka could never seriously threaten

The foundation of India’s victory was laid by an aggressive first half with the bat.

The decision to attack from the beginning paid off. India’s openers exploited the dimensions of the ground and produced 67 runs during the Powerplay, immediately putting the Sri Lankan attack under pressure.

Smriti Mandhana was the central figure in the innings, finishing with 79. Her innings included seven sixes and ensured India maintained a scoring rate that kept the final target out of Sri Lanka’s reach.

Shafali Verma supplied the early fireworks with 48, while the pair’s productive partnership also carried them beyond 4,000 runs together in women’s T20 internationals.

Mandhana’s contribution had another historic dimension. She crossed 11,000 international runs during the innings, becoming the first woman to reach the landmark.

Richa provides the knockout punch.

India appeared set for a substantial score even before the final few overs, but Richa Ghosh transformed a strong position into an imposing one.

Coming in during the latter part of the innings, Richa attacked immediately rather than taking time to settle. Her unbeaten 49 from 22 balls included powerful hitting at the death.

The final over was particularly damaging for Sri Lanka as India collected 25 runs. Two of those sixes came from Richa, whose finishing ability pushed the total to 216/3.

The final score established a new high for a women’s team at the Asian Games. India’s 13 sixes also represented a record for a team in women’s T20 internationals.

Harmanpreet’s own contribution was modest after she was promoted to No. 3, with the captain making 17 from 19 deliveries.

Sri Lanka’s chase falls apart.

If India had made the target appear intimidating, its bowlers ensured Sri Lanka never came close to mounting a challenge.

The collapse began early. Shafali made the first breakthrough, and the pressure intensified rapidly as wickets continued to fall.

Sri Lanka reached 49 for six, effectively ending any realistic hope of an upset.

Athapaththu was the one batter able to produce meaningful resistance, scoring with five boundaries, but the rest of the lineup struggled to cope with India’s attack.

Eight Sri Lankan batters failed to score 10 runs.

India’s bowling plans also changed effectively as the innings progressed.

After the opening spells from Kranti Gaud and Nandani Sharma, Harmanpreet brought spin into the attack. The move paid off as the Sri Lankan middle order collapsed.

Shafali started the damage, Sree Charani kept the pressure on, and Deepti Sharma completed the demolition with three wickets for just six runs.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 69, leaving India with the gold by an enormous 147-run margin.

India’s latest addition to a successful run

The Asian Games title adds another major achievement to a period of sustained success for the Indian women’s side.

The team has recently collected the 50-over World Cup and Asia Cup, and the Asian Games gold now joins those titles.

For Richa, the significance of a medal is not identical to that of a trophy. She pointed to the experience of standing on the podium and hearing the national anthem as something that creates a distinct emotion.

Harmanpreet, meanwhile, said the team’s focus throughout the tournament had been on maintaining its own standards rather than simply protecting an unbeaten record.

That approach produced a perfect campaign: India remained undefeated and finished the tournament with its most emphatic performance in the match that mattered most.
