Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s State Funeral: Indian Leaders, Global Dignitaries Invited as Iran Prepares for Final Farewell
New Delhi/Tehran: Iran has finalised an elaborate schedule for the state funeral and burial ceremonies of its former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the official farewell set to begin in Tehran on July 4 and conclude with his burial in Mashhad on July 9.
Ahead of the ceremonies, the Iranian government, led by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khameini and President Masoud Pezeshkian, has extended formal invitations to political leaders from across the world, including several prominent figures from India.
According to reports, invitations have been sent to leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, and several regional political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The outreach reflects Tehran’s efforts to ensure broad international participation during the final rites of the late Iranian leader.
Last month, President Masoud Pezeshkian also formally invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral ceremonies.
However, earlier reports indicated that the Prime Minister is expected to be on overseas visits to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand during the same period, making it unlikely that he will be able to participate in the events.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was killed in a US-Israel air strike on Tehran on February 28, 2026, according to the report.
His burial was originally planned for March but had to be postponed due to the escalation of the conflict in the region.
India will officially be represented at the funeral by Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
They will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, who are expected to participate in the state ceremonies on behalf of the Government of India.
The Congress has also received an invitation to the funeral.
Party president Mallikarjun Kharge, media and publicity department chairman Pawan Khera, and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid were among those invited.
Speaking to PTI, Salman Khurshid confirmed that Mallikarjun Kharge would not be attending the ceremonies. Instead, Kharge has nominated him to represent both the Congress president and the party at the funeral.
Khurshid said he would travel on a special flight departing at 4 pm and hoped to attend all programmes associated with Ayatollah Khamenei’s burial.
He added that although invitations had been issued to many individuals, the number of delegates would depend on the limited seating arrangements.
He also confirmed that the Congress had officially informed the Iranian authorities that he would represent the party.
The BJP has also been invited, with party national president Nitin Nabin receiving a formal invitation to attend the ceremonies.
Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has also left for Iran after receiving an official invitation to pay her final respects to the late Supreme Leader.
Calling it a rare honour, Mufti described the invitation as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and said she would attend the ceremonies to offer her last tribute.
Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al Safavi, president of Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian of Jammu and Kashmir, also confirmed receiving an invitation through WhatsApp.
He said he looked forward to representing the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the funeral ceremonies.
In an interview with ANI, Aga Syed Hassan said he would participate in the programme on behalf of the entire community and offer floral tributes while carrying the emotions and sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the official schedule, a farewell ceremony will be held at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla Complex in Tehran on July 3, followed by a national commemoration on July 4.
The funeral procession is scheduled for July 6, while additional burial-related ceremonies will take place in Tehran and Qom between July 5 and July 7. The final burial ceremony is scheduled to be held in Mashhad on July 9.
Apart from India, Iran has also invited leaders and representatives from China, Russia, Qatar, France, and Pakistan. Last Friday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that an official Pakistani delegation would travel to Iran to attend the funeral ceremonies.

ईरान ने अपने पूर्व सर्वोच्च नेता अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई के राजकीय अंतिम संस्कार और दफन कार्यक्रम का विस्तृत कार्यक्रम जारी कर दिया है। आधिकारिक समारोह 4 जुलाई से तेहरान में शुरू होंगे और 9 जुलाई को मशहद में अंतिम दफन के साथ संपन्न होंगे।
इन समारोहों से पहले ईरान की सरकार, जिसका नेतृत्व सर्वोच्च नेता अयातुल्ला मोजतबा खामेनी और राष्ट्रपति मसूद पेजेशकियन कर रहे हैं, ने भारत सहित कई देशों के राजनीतिक नेताओं को औपचारिक निमंत्रण भेजा है।
सूत्रों के अनुसार, निमंत्रण भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा), कांग्रेस तथा पीपुल्स डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी (पीडीपी) सहित कई क्षेत्रीय दलों के नेताओं को भेजे गए हैं। ईरान चाहता है कि अपने पूर्व सर्वोच्च नेता की अंतिम विदाई में दुनिया के विभिन्न देशों की व्यापक भागीदारी सुनिश्चित हो।
पिछले महीने राष्ट्रपति मसूद पेजेशकियन ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को भी अंतिम संस्कार में शामिल होने के लिए औपचारिक आमंत्रण भेजा था। हालांकि, इससे पहले आई रिपोर्टों में कहा गया था कि उन्हीं तारीखों के आसपास प्रधानमंत्री की इंडोनेशिया, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और न्यूजीलैंड की प्रस्तावित विदेश यात्रा के कारण उनके लिए इन कार्यक्रमों में शामिल होना संभव नहीं होगा।
रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, तीन दशक से अधिक समय तक ईरान का नेतृत्व करने वाले अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई की 28 फरवरी 2026 को तेहरान पर हुए अमेरिका-इजरायल के हवाई हमले में मौत हो गई थी। उनका अंतिम संस्कार पहले मार्च में प्रस्तावित था, लेकिन क्षेत्रीय संघर्ष तेज होने के कारण इसे स्थगित कर दिया गया।
भारत सरकार की ओर से अंतिम संस्कार समारोह में बिहार के राज्यपाल सैयद अता हसनैन और विदेश राज्य मंत्री पबित्रा मार्गेरिटा शामिल होंगे। उनके साथ विदेश मंत्रालय के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी भी रहेंगे, जो भारत का आधिकारिक प्रतिनिधित्व करेंगे।
कांग्रेस को भी इन समारोहों का निमंत्रण मिला है। पार्टी अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खरगे, कांग्रेस के मीडिया एवं प्रचार विभाग के प्रमुख पवन खेड़ा तथा पूर्व विदेश मंत्री सलमान खुर्शीद को औपचारिक आमंत्रण भेजा गया है।
समाचार एजेंसी पीटीआई से बातचीत में सलमान खुर्शीद ने बताया कि मल्लिकार्जुन खरगे कार्यक्रम में शामिल नहीं हो पाएंगे। उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष ने उन्हें पार्टी और अपनी ओर से अंतिम संस्कार में प्रतिनिधित्व करने के लिए नामित किया है।
सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा कि वह शाम 4 बजे रवाना होने वाली विशेष उड़ान से ईरान जाएंगे और अंतिम संस्कार से जुड़े सभी कार्यक्रमों में शामिल होने की उम्मीद कर रहे हैं।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि कई लोगों को निमंत्रण भेजा गया है, लेकिन सीमित सीटों के कारण प्रतिनिधिमंडल का आकार तय किया जाएगा। उन्होंने पुष्टि की कि कांग्रेस ने ईरानी अधिकारियों को आधिकारिक रूप से सूचित कर दिया है कि वह पार्टी का प्रतिनिधित्व करेंगे।
भाजपा के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष नितिन नवीन को भी अंतिम संस्कार समारोह में शामिल होने का निमंत्रण मिला है।
वहीं, पीपुल्स डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी (पीडीपी) की अध्यक्ष महबूबा मुफ्ती भी आधिकारिक निमंत्रण मिलने के बाद ईरान रवाना हो गई हैं। उन्होंने इसे अपने जीवन का एक दुर्लभ और सम्मानजनक अवसर बताते हुए कहा कि वह दिवंगत सर्वोच्च नेता को अंतिम श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने के लिए समारोह में शामिल होंगी।
अंजुमन-ए-शरई शियान, जम्मू-कश्मीर के अध्यक्ष आगा सैयद हसन मूसवी अल सफवी ने भी व्हाट्सएप के माध्यम से निमंत्रण मिलने की पुष्टि की। उन्होंने कहा कि वह जम्मू-कश्मीर के लोगों की भावनाओं का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए अंतिम संस्कार समारोह में भाग लेंगे।
समाचार एजेंसी एएनआई से बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा कि वह पूरे समुदाय की ओर से पुष्पांजलि अर्पित करेंगे और जम्मू-कश्मीर के लोगों की भावनाओं एवं संवेदनाओं को अपने साथ लेकर कार्यक्रम में शामिल होंगे।
आधिकारिक कार्यक्रम के अनुसार, 3 जुलाई को तेहरान स्थित इमाम खोमैनी ग्रैंड मुसल्ला कॉम्प्लेक्स में विदाई समारोह आयोजित किया जाएगा। इसके बाद 4 जुलाई को स्मृति सभा होगी, जबकि 6 जुलाई को अंतिम यात्रा निकाली जाएगी। 5, 6 और 7 जुलाई को तेहरान और क़ोम में विभिन्न धार्मिक एवं अंतिम संस्कार संबंधी कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाएंगे। अंतिम दफन समारोह 9 जुलाई को मशहद में संपन्न होगा।
भारत के अलावा चीन, रूस, कतर, फ्रांस और पाकिस्तान सहित कई देशों के नेताओं और प्रतिनिधियों को भी औपचारिक निमंत्रण भेजा गया है। पिछले शुक्रवार पाकिस्तान के प्रधानमंत्री शहबाज शरीफ ने घोषणा की थी कि उनका देश भी आधिकारिक प्रतिनिधिमंडल को अंतिम संस्कार समारोह में शामिल होने के लिए ईरान भेजेगा।
