India Condemns Demolition of 125-Year-Old Gurdwara in Pakistan, Demands Swift Action and Restoration
New Delhi/Islamabad: India on Wednesday strongly condemned the demolition of a 125-year-old Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Farooqabad, Pakistan, describing the incident as a deeply disturbing act targeting a revered Sikh place of worship.
Expressing serious concern over the development, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged the Pakistani government to conduct a prompt investigation, bring those responsible to justice, and ensure the immediate restoration of the historic shrine.
In an official statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India unequivocally denounces what it termed a “highly deplorable and targeted act of vandalism” against a sacred Sikh religious site.
He stressed that the incident has caused deep anguish among Sikhs across the world and called on Pakistan to act without delay against those involved.
The controversy erupted after a local businessman allegedly demolished the decades-old gurdwara located in Pakistan’s Punjab province, around 70 kilometres from Lahore.
According to officials quoted by PTI, the structure was razed without obtaining the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the concerned government department.
A Punjab government official confirmed that the demolition was carried out without the legally required clearance and said the department had not granted permission for any such action.
The incident has raised serious questions about the protection of minority religious heritage in the country.
News of the demolition sparked widespread outrage among the Sikh community in both India and Pakistan.
Members of the community condemned the destruction of the historic shrine and demanded immediate intervention from the authorities.
In New Delhi, a delegation of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) met officials of the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday, seeking urgent diplomatic intervention.
The delegation submitted a memorandum requesting the Government of India to take up the issue strongly with Pakistan.
The DSGMC urged the Centre to ensure that no further damage is caused to the gurdwara and called for the complete restoration of the demolished portions of the historic structure.
It also appealed for effective measures to prevent similar incidents involving Sikh religious sites in Pakistan in the future.
In its memorandum, the DSGMC requested the Government of India to lodge a strong diplomatic protest with Islamabad, expressing the Sikh community’s concern over repeated incidents affecting minority places of worship.
The committee also called for concrete steps to safeguard the religious freedom and rights of minority communities in Pakistan.
Following the protests, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took cognisance of the incident.
According to PTI, Punjab Minorities Minister Ramesh Singh Arora, who visited Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Farooqabad, said the provincial government remains fully committed to protecting the constitutional rights of minorities and preserving their places of worship under all circumstances.
Announcing immediate restoration efforts, Arora directed the Auqaf Department to initiate an inquiry into the ownership and legal status of the land on which the gurdwara stands.
He noted that preliminary information indicated the property was not registered as Auqaf land.
Arora said he personally inspected the site and instructed the concerned authorities to submit a detailed, fact-based report at the earliest so that appropriate action could be taken.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the demolished portions of Gurdwara Sahib should be rebuilt without delay.
The ministry also expressed concern over reports suggesting that neither the local administration nor the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) had taken any meaningful action following the demolition.
In its statement, the MEA said the destruction of the historic shrine and the reported lack of effective response from the authorities were matters of grave concern.
It urged Pakistan to restore and reconstruct the damaged sections of the gurdwara at the earliest.
India further expressed concern over what it described as the continuing systemic targeting of religious minorities and their places of worship in Pakistan.
The MEA called upon Islamabad to fulfil its responsibility of ensuring the safety, security and welfare of minority communities while protecting their religious institutions.
The Indian government also urged Pakistan to take decisive steps to end the prevailing atmosphere of sectarian violence and religious intolerance and to ensure that members of all faiths can practise their religion without fear.
At the same time, traders operating around the demolished gurdwara site voiced reservations about the proposed restoration.
According to PTI, the premises had remained abandoned for nearly 80 years, during which several families settled there and established shops and businesses.
The traders argued that restoring the gurdwara could lead to the displacement of these families.
They appealed to the Pakistani government to provide alternative housing, rehabilitation and livelihood support if eviction becomes necessary during the restoration process.

भारत ने बुधवार को पाकिस्तान के फारूकाबाद में स्थित 125 वर्ष पुराने गुरुद्वारा सिंह सभा को गिराए जाने की घटना की कड़ी निंदा की। भारत ने इसे सिख समुदाय के एक पवित्र धार्मिक स्थल को निशाना बनाकर किया गया बेहद दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण और आपत्तिजनक कृत्य बताया।
विदेश मंत्रालय (MEA) ने पाकिस्तान सरकार से इस मामले की तत्काल और निष्पक्ष जांच कराने, दोषियों के खिलाफ सख्त कार्रवाई करने तथा गुरुद्वारे के क्षतिग्रस्त हिस्सों का जल्द से जल्द पुनर्निर्माण कराने की मांग की।
विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता रणधीर जायसवाल ने जारी बयान में कहा कि भारत इस घटना की कड़े शब्दों में निंदा करता है। उन्होंने इसे एक पूजनीय सिख धार्मिक स्थल के खिलाफ किया गया “बेहद निंदनीय और सुनियोजित तोड़फोड़ का कृत्य” बताया।
उन्होंने कहा कि इस घटना ने दुनिया भर के सिख समुदाय की भावनाओं को गहरी ठेस पहुंचाई है और पाकिस्तान को बिना किसी देरी के दोषियों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए।
रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रांत में लाहौर से लगभग 70 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित फारूकाबाद में एक स्थानीय कारोबारी ने दशकों पुराने इस ऐतिहासिक गुरुद्वारे को बिना किसी सरकारी अनुमति के ध्वस्त कर दिया। समाचार एजेंसी पीटीआई के मुताबिक, संबंधित विभाग से अनिवार्य अनापत्ति प्रमाण पत्र (NOC) लिए बिना ही यह कार्रवाई की गई।
पंजाब सरकार के एक अधिकारी ने पुष्टि की कि गुरुद्वारे को गिराने के लिए आवश्यक अनुमति नहीं ली गई थी और संबंधित विभाग ने इस कार्रवाई की कोई मंजूरी नहीं दी थी। इस घटना ने पाकिस्तान में अल्पसंख्यकों के धार्मिक स्थलों की सुरक्षा को लेकर गंभीर सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं।
गुरुद्वारे को गिराए जाने की खबर सामने आते ही भारत और पाकिस्तान, दोनों देशों के सिख समुदाय में व्यापक आक्रोश फैल गया। समुदाय के लोगों ने इस ऐतिहासिक धार्मिक स्थल को नुकसान पहुंचाए जाने की कड़ी आलोचना की और सरकार से तत्काल हस्तक्षेप की मांग की।
इसी क्रम में दिल्ली सिख गुरुद्वारा प्रबंधक कमेटी (DSGMC) का एक प्रतिनिधिमंडल बुधवार को विदेश मंत्रालय के अधिकारियों से मिला। प्रतिनिधिमंडल ने सरकार से इस मामले में कूटनीतिक स्तर पर प्रभावी हस्तक्षेप करने का आग्रह किया।
डीएसजीएमसी ने मंत्रालय को सौंपे गए ज्ञापन में अनुरोध किया कि पाकिस्तान में स्थित इस गुरुद्वारे को आगे किसी भी प्रकार का नुकसान न होने दिया जाए। साथ ही, ध्वस्त किए गए हिस्सों का जल्द पुनर्निर्माण कराया जाए और भविष्य में ऐसी घटनाओं की पुनरावृत्ति रोकने के लिए प्रभावी कदम उठाए जाएं।
कमेटी ने भारत सरकार से यह भी आग्रह किया कि वह पाकिस्तान सरकार के समक्ष कड़ा राजनयिक विरोध दर्ज कराए और अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों के धार्मिक अधिकारों तथा उनके पूजा स्थलों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने की आवश्यकता पर जोर दे।
विरोध प्रदर्शनों के बाद पाकिस्तान के पंजाब की मुख्यमंत्री मरियम नवाज ने इस मामले का संज्ञान लिया। पंजाब के अल्पसंख्यक मामलों के मंत्री रमेश सिंह अरोड़ा, जिन्होंने फारूकाबाद स्थित गुरुद्वारा सिंह सभा का दौरा किया, ने पीटीआई को बताया कि राज्य सरकार अल्पसंख्यकों के मौलिक अधिकारों और उनके धार्मिक स्थलों की हर परिस्थिति में सुरक्षा के लिए पूरी तरह प्रतिबद्ध है।
गुरुद्वारे के तत्काल पुनर्स्थापन की घोषणा करते हुए रमेश सिंह अरोड़ा ने औकाफ विभाग को उस भूमि के स्वामित्व और कानूनी स्थिति की जांच शुरू करने का निर्देश दिया, जिस पर गुरुद्वारा स्थित है। उन्होंने कहा कि प्रारंभिक जानकारी के अनुसार यह संपत्ति औकाफ भूमि के रूप में पंजीकृत नहीं है।
उन्होंने बताया कि उन्होंने स्वयं घटनास्थल का निरीक्षण किया है और संबंधित अधिकारियों को जल्द से जल्द तथ्यों पर आधारित विस्तृत रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत करने के निर्देश दिए हैं ताकि उचित कार्रवाई की जा सके।
इस बीच, भारत के विदेश मंत्रालय ने अपने बयान में दोहराया कि गुरुद्वारा साहिब के ध्वस्त हिस्सों का शीघ्र पुनर्निर्माण किया जाना चाहिए। मंत्रालय ने यह भी चिंता जताई कि स्थानीय प्रशासन और इवैक्यूई ट्रस्ट प्रॉपर्टी बोर्ड (ETPB) की ओर से अब तक कोई प्रभावी कार्रवाई किए जाने की जानकारी सामने नहीं आई है।
विदेश मंत्रालय ने कहा कि एक ऐतिहासिक सिख धार्मिक स्थल का ध्वस्तीकरण और उसके बाद स्थानीय प्रशासन की कथित निष्क्रियता अत्यंत गंभीर चिंता का विषय है। भारत ने पाकिस्तान से अपील की कि गुरुद्वारे के क्षतिग्रस्त हिस्सों की जल्द से जल्द मरम्मत और पुनर्निर्माण कराया जाए।
भारत ने अपने बयान में पाकिस्तान में धार्मिक अल्पसंख्यकों और उनके पूजा स्थलों को कथित रूप से लगातार निशाना बनाए जाने पर भी चिंता व्यक्त की।
विदेश मंत्रालय ने पाकिस्तान सरकार से अपनी संवैधानिक और नैतिक जिम्मेदारियों का निर्वहन करते हुए अल्पसंख्यक समुदायों की सुरक्षा, सम्मान और धार्मिक स्थलों की रक्षा सुनिश्चित करने का आग्रह किया।
साथ ही भारत ने पाकिस्तान से सांप्रदायिक हिंसा और धार्मिक असहिष्णुता के मौजूदा माहौल को समाप्त करने के लिए ठोस और प्रभावी कदम उठाने की भी मांग की, ताकि सभी समुदाय बिना किसी भय के अपने धार्मिक अधिकारों का पालन कर सकें।
दूसरी ओर, गुरुद्वारे के आसपास व्यापार करने वाले कुछ स्थानीय दुकानदारों ने प्रस्तावित पुनर्स्थापन योजना पर अपनी चिंता भी जताई। पीटीआई के अनुसार, यह परिसर करीब 80 वर्षों से वीरान पड़ा था, जिसके दौरान कई परिवार वहां बस गए और उन्होंने छोटे-बड़े व्यवसाय शुरू कर दिए।
व्यापारियों का कहना है कि यदि गुरुद्वारे का पुनर्निर्माण किया गया तो वहां रहने वाले परिवारों के विस्थापन की आशंका है।
उन्होंने पाकिस्तान सरकार से मांग की कि यदि पुनर्स्थापन के लिए लोगों को हटाना आवश्यक हो, तो प्रभावित परिवारों के लिए वैकल्पिक आवास, पुनर्वास और रोजगार की समुचित व्यवस्था सुनिश्चित की जाए।
