Azamgarh Horror: Farmer Dies After Allegedly Killing Wife, Two Priests and Shooting Son
Police stormed a locked room after a seven-hour standoff; accused farmer and his injured son were later declared dead
AZAMGARH: A seven-hour police standoff at a village home in Azamgarh ended in multiple deaths early Wednesday after a farmer accused of killing three people during a religious ceremony allegedly shot his own son and then exchanged fire with police.
The drama began after 45-year-old Arvind Singh allegedly opened fire inside his home in Shambhupur village on Tuesday, killing his wife Babita Singh, 35, and two priests who were conducting a religious ceremony at the house.
The killings were followed by a tense siege. Singh reportedly withdrew into a room with his children and refused to come out despite repeated appeals from police and family members.
Officers surrounded the house and attempted to negotiate with him for several hours.
Their immediate priority, police said, was to secure the children and persuade Singh to surrender without further bloodshed.
The situation deteriorated when officers heard a gunshot from the room. Police then moved to force entry after using tear gas and stun grenades, according to senior officers.
Inside, they found Singh’s young son suffering from a gunshot wound. Police alleged that the boy had been shot by his father.
Officers also came under fire as they entered the room. According to ADG Naveen Arora, Singh fired several rounds from his six-shot revolver.
Police returned fire, during which Singh sustained serious injuries.
The accused and his injured son were rushed to hospital. Both were subsequently declared dead, with police putting Singh’s time of death at around 3.30 am.
Two other children were brought out alive. Police said Singh had been holding one of the girls and was allegedly using the older child as a shield during the confrontation.
What happened before the shooting?
The violence erupted while a five-day religious ceremony was being conducted at the Singh family’s residence. Tuesday was the fourth day of the programme.
Relatives told investigators that Singh had been undergoing treatment for behavioural and mental health problems.
The family, however, reportedly believed that his condition had a supernatural cause and had turned to the religious ceremony in the hope of helping him.
According to the police’s preliminary account, Singh became increasingly angry during the proceedings and got into a confrontation with the two priests.
The argument reportedly became more intense after Singh questioned the priests and accused them of being dishonest. At some point, he allegedly assaulted his wife.
The priests, identified by police as Mahendra Pathak, 42, and Akhilesh Mishra, 55, reportedly began filming the confrontation on their phones.
Investigators allege that Singh then went for the licensed revolver kept inside the house. He allegedly fired at his wife before turning the weapon on the two priests.
All three victims were taken to hospital but could not be saved.
Police waited for hours.
By the time officers reached the property, Singh had barricaded himself inside with his children.
SSP Azamgarh Anil Kumar said police attempted to establish contact with him and also sought assistance from relatives in persuading him to surrender.
The negotiations continued for about seven hours. Singh allegedly refused to release the children and threatened to shoot them.
Police eventually decided to maintain a tight perimeter around the house in case he attempted to break out, ADG Arora said.
The sound of another gunshot then prompted the final intervention.
According to the police account, officers used stun grenades and tear gas before breaking open the room. Singh allegedly fired four or five rounds at the advancing personnel, exhausting the ammunition in his revolver.
The police team fired back, hitting him.
The deaths of Singh and his son brought a violent end to an incident that began as a family-led religious ritual and rapidly escalated into a hostage situation and armed confrontation.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings, the sequence of the firing,g and the events that preceded the confrontation.

आजमगढ़: उत्तर प्रदेश के आजमगढ़ में एक धार्मिक आयोजन के बीच शुरू हुआ विवाद मंगलवार को ऐसी हिंसक घटना में बदल गया, जिसका अंत कई मौतों के साथ हुआ।
शंभूपुर गांव में 45 वर्षीय किसान अरविंद सिंह पर अपनी पत्नी और दो पुजारियों की गोली मारकर हत्या करने का आरोप है।
इसके बाद वह बच्चों को लेकर एक कमरे में बंद हो गया और करीब सात घंटे तक पुलिस के साथ गतिरोध बना रहा।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, कमरे के भीतर से गोली चलने के बाद हालात बेहद गंभीर हो गए। अधिकारियों ने दरवाजा तोड़कर अंदर प्रवेश किया तो अरविंद का एक बेटा गोली लगने से घायल मिला।
पुलिस का आरोप है कि बच्चे को उसके पिता ने ही गोली मारी थी।
कमरे में घुसने के दौरान पुलिस टीम पर भी कथित तौर पर फायरिंग की गई।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, अरविंद के पास छह गोलियों वाली लाइसेंसी रिवॉल्वर थी और उसने पुलिस पर कई राउंड चलाए। जवाब में पुलिस ने भी गोली चलाई, जिसमें अरविंद गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया।
अरविंद और उसके घायल बेटे को तत्काल अस्पताल ले जाया गया। डॉक्टरों ने दोनों को मृत घोषित कर दिया। पुलिस के अनुसार, अरविंद की मौत लगभग सुबह 3.30 बजे हुई।
इस बीच घर में मौजूद दो अन्य बच्चों को पुलिस ने सुरक्षित बाहर निकाल लिया। अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, कार्रवाई के दौरान आरोपी एक बच्ची को पकड़े हुए था और दूसरी बेटी को कथित तौर पर अपने सामने ढाल की तरह इस्तेमाल कर रहा था।
धार्मिक आयोजन के बीच बिगड़े हालात
घटना उस समय हुई जब परिवार के घर पर पांच दिन का धार्मिक अनुष्ठान चल रहा था। मंगलवार को कार्यक्रम का चौथा दिन था।
परिजनों के अनुसार, अरविंद पिछले कुछ समय से मानसिक और व्यवहार संबंधी परेशानियों के लिए उपचार करा रहा था। परिवार के कुछ लोगों का मानना था कि उसकी समस्या का संबंध किसी कथित आध्यात्मिक या अदृश्य शक्ति से है। इसी वजह से घर पर धार्मिक अनुष्ठान कराया जा रहा था।
पुलिस की शुरुआती जांच के मुताबिक, कार्यक्रम के दौरान अरविंद का दो पुजारियों से विवाद हो गया। बताया गया है कि वह उनसे लगातार सवाल कर रहा था और उन पर कथित तौर पर धोखाधड़ी करने का आरोप लगा रहा था।
बातचीत बढ़ते-बढ़ते तनावपूर्ण हो गई। इसी दौरान अरविंद ने कथित तौर पर अपनी पत्नी बाबिता सिंह के साथ मारपीट की।
पुलिस के अनुसार, अनुष्ठान करा रहे महेंद्र पाठक और अखिलेश मिश्रा ने विवाद का वीडियो अपने मोबाइल फोन में रिकॉर्ड करना शुरू कर दिया। इसके बाद स्थिति अचानक नियंत्रण से बाहर हो गई।
आरोप है कि अरविंद ने घर में रखी लाइसेंसी रिवॉल्वर निकाल ली और गोली चला दी। फायरिंग में उसकी पत्नी बाबिता तथा दोनों पुजारी घायल हो गए। अस्पताल ले जाने पर तीनों को मृत घोषित कर दिया गया।
पुलिस के सामने सात घंटे की चुनौती
तीन लोगों की हत्या के बाद अरविंद बच्चों के साथ एक कमरे में चला गया और अंदर से दरवाजा बंद कर लिया। पुलिस के पहुंचने पर उसे बाहर निकलने के लिए मनाने की कोशिश शुरू हुई।
आजमगढ़ के एसएसपी अनिल कुमार के मुताबिक, अधिकारियों ने परिजनों को भी बातचीत में शामिल किया ताकि अरविंद बच्चों को छोड़कर आत्मसमर्पण कर दे। लेकिन वह कथित तौर पर अपनी जगह से हटने को तैयार नहीं हुआ।
काफी देर तक बातचीत के बावजूद जब कोई समाधान नहीं निकला तो पुलिस ने घर को चारों ओर से घेर लिया। अधिकारियों को आशंका थी कि आरोपी बाहर निकलने की कोशिश कर सकता है।
इसी बीच कमरे के अंदर से गोली चलने की आवाज सुनाई दी। एडीजी नवीन अरोड़ा के अनुसार, इसके बाद पुलिस ने स्टन ग्रेनेड और आंसू गैस का इस्तेमाल किया और कमरे में प्रवेश किया।
पुलिस का दावा है कि अंदर पहुंचते ही अरविंद ने अधिकारियों पर कई गोलियां दागीं। उसकी रिवॉल्वर की गोलियां खत्म होने के बाद पुलिस ने जवाबी गोलीबारी की।
घायल अरविंद को अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया, लेकिन उसे बचाया नहीं जा सका। उसका घायल बेटा भी उपचार के दौरान दम तोड़ गया।
पुलिस अब पूरे घटनाक्रम की कड़ी जोड़ने में जुटी है। जांच में फायरिंग के क्रम, लाइसेंसी हथियार के इस्तेमाल, धार्मिक आयोजन के दौरान हुए विवाद और पुलिस की जवाबी कार्रवाई से जुड़े तथ्यों को शामिल किया जा रहा है।
