Washington: A dispute between President Donald Trump and several US news organisations has spilled directly into television coverage of the presidency, after the five networks that traditionally operate the White House television pool jointly stopped providing the shared video feed.
ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, NBC News and CNN said on Monday that they would suspend the rotating presidential pool after CNN was prevented from carrying out its scheduled assignment.
The decision followed the White House’s exclusion of CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the presidential complex.
The development has disrupted a system that normally allows broadcasters across the country to obtain footage of presidential appearances without each organisation having to deploy its own camera crew.
Why the television pool matters
The presidential pool is essentially a shared production arrangement.
The five major television networks take turns sending crews to cover events involving the president and distribute the resulting footage to other broadcasters.
It is particularly important when space, security or travel arrangements make it impractical for every television organisation to send its own team.
CNN had been scheduled to provide the pool coverage on Monday, including footage related to Trump’s trip to New York for the UN General Assembly.
With CNN barred from the White House and removed from its scheduled pool assignment, the other four networks chose not to install a replacement crew.
Their joint position was that the public has an interest in receiving independent and accurate information about the government and that news organisations should not be excluded because of disagreement over their reporting.
The suspension does not mean ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC or CNN have stopped reporting on the Trump administration.
Journalists can continue covering presidential activities from locations where they have access, while individual organisations can also produce their own material.
Three media organisations take the fight to court
The television dispute coincided with a legal challenge from CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
The three organisations filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against Trump and members of his administration, asking the court to intervene over their exclusion from the White House.
They argue that the restrictions violate constitutional protections for freedom of the press and were imposed without adequate notice or due process.
The outlets are seeking court relief that would restore their access.
Their complaint argues that government officials cannot deny journalists access because they object to the way those journalists report on the administration.
The White House has defended its position, saying access to the presidential complex is a privilege rather than an unconditional right.
Trump has described the affected organisations as purveyors of “fake news” and has defended the restrictions as a response to their coverage.
Reporters turned away from White House
The confrontation became operationally visible over the weekend when journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied entry to the White House grounds.
CBS News reported that MS NOW personnel were turned away Saturday and that press credentials had been revoked. The three organisations subsequently continued their coverage from outside the complex.
The administration’s decision also removed CNN from its normal role in the television pool—the first such removal to disrupt the established rotation among the five networks.
Trump’s presidential events affected
The consequences became especially apparent during presidential events on Monday.
With no replacement television pool crew operating under the traditional arrangement, access to the usual shared live video and audio feed was sharply reduced.
That gap was noticeable during Trump’s White House appearance, when the president’s remarks were difficult or impossible for television viewers to hear through the limited feed available.
The situation also affected coverage surrounding Trump’s New York trip for the United Nations General Assembly, demonstrating how the dispute can affect coverage beyond the White House itself.
Administration and media now locked in legal dispute
Trump has rejected the characterization of the move as an attack on press freedom, arguing instead that his administration is confronting what he considers false reporting.
He has also indicated that other media organisations could face similar treatment.
The three organisations challenging the restrictions maintain that the government’s objection to their reporting cannot be used as the basis for selectively denying access.
The case has now moved into the federal courts, where the legal arguments over press access, government discretion and constitutional protections will be tested.
Reuters reported Tuesday that legal experts it consulted viewed the administration’s position as facing significant constitutional questions concerning viewpoint discrimination.
For television audiences, however, the dispute has already produced a tangible consequence: the normally competitive networks have collectively stepped away from the presidential video pool rather than replace CNN in the rotation.
