Bangladesh: Retired Hindu Teacher’s Family of Four Found Dead in Rangpur Home
Investigators say the killings may have been triggered after the retired schoolteacher confronted suspected drug users on the roof of his house; two people are being questioned.
A retired Hindu schoolteacher and three members of his family were found dead inside their home in Bangladesh’s Rangpur city, in a case that has prompted a major police investigation and led to the detention of two suspects.
The victims were identified as 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a former teacher at Rangpur Zilla School; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23; and 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty.
According to investigators, the bodies were discovered in different parts of the family’s three-storey residence after police forced their way into the locked property.
Ganapati’s body was found on the roof, while his wife and daughter were discovered on a staircase. The boy’s body was recovered from beneath a bed.
Police said the condition inside the house initially suggested that the crime scene may have been staged to resemble a robbery.
The building was dark when officers entered, and household items were reportedly scattered around the rooms.
However, investigators later developed another theory: the killings may have begun after Ganapati confronted people allegedly using drugs on his rooftop.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said two suspects, believed to be related, were suspected of reaching the terrace by climbing through a neighbouring building.
Investigators believe they were carrying Yaba, an illegal stimulant containing methamphetamine and caffeine.
Police said Ganapati went to the roof after hearing suspicious sounds and questioned the intruders.
Investigators allege that he was then strangled with a gamchha, a traditional cotton cloth.
His wife reportedly became aware of the disturbance and was subsequently attacked, followed by the couple’s two children.
The police believe all four victims were strangled. Their bodies were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
The victims’ relatives said they were struggling to understand what could have led to the killings. Ganapati’s niece, Soma Chakraborty, told local media that her uncle had no known personal enemies.
She said Ganapati had begun practising homoeopathy after retiring from his teaching career.
The family had been living in the house for about four years and was known locally for leading a polite, quiet life.
Investigators had initially examined the possibility of a robbery, but the inquiry has since focused on the alleged confrontation involving drug use.
Teams from the police, Criminal Investigation Department and Detective Branch are jointly working on the case.
Two people, identified in reports as Mughdho and Siddhartha, have been taken into custody as the investigation continues. Police have not yet disclosed whether formal charges have been filed.
The killings have drawn attention in Bangladesh because of the scale of the violence, with an entire family wiped out inside its own home.
Investigators are now working to establish the precise sequence of events and determine whether anyone else was involved.

पुलिस का संदेह है कि घर की छत पर कथित रूप से याबा नशे का सेवन कर रहे लोगों से सवाल-जवाब के बाद विवाद हुआ और इसी ने चार लोगों की हत्या का रूप ले लिया; दो संदिग्ध हिरासत में।
बांग्लादेश के रंगपुर शहर में एक हिंदू परिवार के चार सदस्यों की उनके ही घर में हत्या का सनसनीखेज मामला सामने आया है।
मृतकों में एक सेवानिवृत्त स्कूल शिक्षक, उनकी पत्नी तथा दोनों बच्चे शामिल हैं।
इस घटना ने पूरे इलाके को झकझोर दिया है और पुलिस ने दो लोगों को हिरासत में लेकर कई एजेंसियों के साथ संयुक्त जांच शुरू कर दी है।
मृतकों की पहचान 65 वर्षीय गणपति चक्रवर्ती, उनकी 50 वर्षीय पत्नी प्रीतिलता चक्रवर्ती, 23 वर्षीय बेटी अगामी चक्रवर्ती प्रार्थी और 12 वर्षीय बेटे प्रियम चक्रवर्ती के रूप में हुई है।
गणपति चक्रवर्ती रंगपुर जिला स्कूल के सेवानिवृत्त शिक्षक थे।
पुलिस के अनुसार, परिवार के तीन मंजिला मकान का ताला तोड़कर अंदर प्रवेश करने पर अलग-अलग स्थानों पर शव मिले।
गणपति चक्रवर्ती का शव मकान की छत पर मिला, जबकि उनकी पत्नी और बेटी के शव सीढ़ियों के पास बरामद किए गए। उनके बेटे का शव एक बिस्तर के नीचे पाया गया।
जांच अधिकारियों ने बताया कि घर के भीतर अंधेरा था और सामान बिखरा हुआ मिला। शुरुआती तौर पर पुलिस ने इसे लूटपाट से जुड़ा अपराध माना और आशंका जताई कि घटनास्थल को जानबूझकर ऐसा रूप दिया गया हो सकता है, जिससे हत्या के वास्तविक कारण से ध्यान भटकाया जा सके।
जांच आगे बढ़ने पर पुलिस के सामने एक अलग संभावना उभरकर आई। अधिकारियों का मानना है कि वारदात की शुरुआत उस समय हुई हो सकती है, जब गणपति चक्रवर्ती ने अपनी छत पर कथित रूप से नशा कर रहे लोगों को देख लिया और उनसे सवाल किया।
रंगपुर महानगर पुलिस आयुक्त मोहम्मद अब्दुल माबूद के अनुसार, दो संदिग्ध पड़ोसी इमारत के रास्ते चक्रवर्ती के घर की छत तक पहुंचे थे।
जांच में संदेह है कि उनके पास याबा था, जो मेथामफेटामाइन और कैफीन से बनी एक अवैध और अत्यधिक नशे की लत पैदा करने वाली गोली है।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, छत से आ रही आवाज सुनकर गणपति चक्रवर्ती वहां पहुंचे और संदिग्ध लोगों से पूछताछ की। इसी दौरान कथित रूप से उनकी गमछे से गला घोंटकर हत्या कर दी गई।
इसके बाद जब उनकी पत्नी को घर में हो रही हलचल का पता चला तो उन पर भी हमला किया गया। पुलिस का कहना है कि बाद में परिवार के दोनों बच्चों की भी हत्या कर दी गई।
अधिकारियों को आशंका है कि चारों लोगों की मौत गला घोंटे जाने से हुई। सभी शवों को पोस्टमॉर्टम के लिए रंगपुर मेडिकल कॉलेज अस्पताल भेज दिया गया है।
पीड़ित परिवार के रिश्तेदारों ने घटना पर गहरा सदमा जताया है। गणपति चक्रवर्ती की भतीजी सोमा चक्रवर्ती ने स्थानीय मीडिया से बातचीत में कहा कि उनके चाचा की किसी से व्यक्तिगत दुश्मनी होने की जानकारी परिवार को नहीं थी।
परिजनों के अनुसार, शिक्षण सेवा से सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद गणपति चक्रवर्ती होम्योपैथी से जुड़ा काम कर रहे थे।
परिवार लगभग चार वर्ष से इस मकान में रह रहा था और पड़ोसियों के बीच शांत तथा विनम्र स्वभाव वाला माना जाता था।
मामले की जांच में पुलिस, सीआईडी और डिटेक्टिव ब्रांच की टीमें शामिल हैं। पहले लूटपाट की आशंका पर ध्यान केंद्रित किया गया था, लेकिन अब जांच कथित नशे से जुड़े विवाद की दिशा में आगे बढ़ रही है।
मीडिया रिपोर्टों में दो हिरासत में लिए गए लोगों के नाम मुग्धो और सिद्धार्थ बताए गए हैं।
हालांकि, जांच अभी जारी है और पुलिस ने घटना की पूरी कड़ी तथा संभावित रूप से अन्य लोगों की भूमिका पर अंतिम निष्कर्ष नहीं दिया है।
एक ही घर के भीतर पूरे परिवार के चार सदस्यों की मौत ने इस मामले को अत्यंत गंभीर बना दिया है।
अब जांच एजेंसियां यह पता लगाने में जुटी हैं कि वारदात किस क्रम में हुई और क्या इस अपराध में हिरासत में लिए गए दोनों संदिग्धों के अलावा कोई अन्य व्यक्ति भी शामिल था।
