Brooklyn Shooting Claims Life of 27-Year-Old Indian; Consulate Steps in to Assist Family
Gurdeep Singh, who had lived in the United States for more than a decade, died after being shot during a late-night confrontation in Brooklyn; the gunman remains at large.
A 27-year-old Indian citizen has been killed in a late-night shooting in New York City, prompting the Consulate General of India in New York to reach out to his family and offer consular assistance.
The victim, Gurdeep Singh, lived in Queens but was shot in Brooklyn’s East New York neighbourhood late on Friday.
Authorities are trying to identify and locate the person who opened fire and then left the scene in a vehicle.
The Indian Consulate announced its response after learning of Singh’s death, saying it was in direct contact with his family.
In a public statement, it conveyed condolences and said officials were prepared to provide all possible help.
The fatal incident occurred near Stanley Avenue at about 10 pm local time.
Investigators are examining reports that Singh had been involved in a dispute with another man shortly before the shooting.
Police responding to the emergency call found Singh critically wounded with a gunshot injury to the chest.
He was transported for medical treatment but could not be saved.
Footage from a camera in the area is expected to be part of the investigation. The recording reportedly shows a physical confrontation between two individuals on the street.
A sudden burst of light is then visible, after which one person collapses. The other is seen departing in a car.
Investigators spent Saturday examining the surrounding area and gathering material that could help establish the sequence of events.
The suspected shooter had not been arrested at the time of the latest reports.
The killing has unsettled people in the neighbourhood.
A man who works close to the location of the shooting said he was alarmed by news of the incident and concerned about the violence.
Singh had reportedly arrived in the United States more than 10 years ago.
His death has also drawn attention from the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), which said the case should be investigated carefully before any conclusions are reached about the circumstances or motive.
NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal said every violent death of a young Punjabi or Sikh individual leaves behind a devastated family and a traumatised community.
He said such incidents must not be dismissed as isolated episodes that people eventually learn to overlook.
The organisation has urged investigators to establish why the confrontation occurred and what led to the shooting.
At the same time, it appealed for restraint from public speculation until law enforcement authorities complete their inquiry.
As the investigation continues, police are working to identify the shooter, trace the vehicle used in the escape and determine whether the confrontation was the sole trigger for the killing.

अमेरिका के न्यूयॉर्क शहर में एक भारतीय युवक की हत्या के मामले में भारतीय महावाणिज्य दूतावास ने पीड़ित परिवार को सहायता उपलब्ध कराने की पहल की है।
27 वर्षीय गुरदीप सिंह की ब्रुकलिन में शुक्रवार देर रात गोली लगने के बाद मौत हो गई।
गुरदीप सिंह क्वींस में रहते थे, लेकिन घटना ब्रुकलिन के ईस्ट न्यूयॉर्क इलाके में हुई।
पुलिस अब उस व्यक्ति की तलाश कर रही है, जिस पर गोली चलाने का संदेह है। जांच के अनुसार, संदिग्ध वारदात के बाद एक कार से मौके से निकल गया।
घटना की जानकारी मिलने के बाद न्यूयॉर्क स्थित भारतीय महावाणिज्य दूतावास ने गुरदीप सिंह के परिवार के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त की।
दूतावास ने कहा कि उसके अधिकारी परिवार के संपर्क में हैं और जरूरत पड़ने पर हरसंभव सहायता प्रदान की जाएगी।
पुलिस जांच के मुताबिक, शुक्रवार रात करीब 10 बजे स्टेनली एवेन्यू के पास गुरदीप सिंह का एक व्यक्ति से सामना हुआ। दोनों के बीच विवाद या झड़प हुई, जिसके बाद गोली चलने की घटना सामने आई।
सूचना मिलने पर पुलिस मौके पर पहुंची और गुरदीप सिंह को सीने में गोली लगी अवस्था में पाया। आपातकालीन चिकित्सा कर्मियों ने उन्हें अस्पताल पहुंचाया, लेकिन उपचार के दौरान उनकी जान नहीं बचाई जा सकी।
जांच में आसपास के निगरानी कैमरों के फुटेज को महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है। उपलब्ध वीडियो में दो व्यक्तियों के बीच सड़क पर संघर्ष दिखाई देने की बात कही गई है।
इसके बाद एक तेज चमक दिखाई देती है और कुछ ही क्षणों बाद एक व्यक्ति जमीन पर गिर जाता है। दूसरा व्यक्ति कथित रूप से वाहन में बैठकर वहां से चला जाता है।
शनिवार को पुलिस ने घटनास्थल और उसके आसपास के इलाके में जांच की तथा संभावित साक्ष्य एकत्र किए। ताजा जानकारी तक किसी संदिग्ध को गिरफ्तार नहीं किया गया था।
घटना के बाद इलाके में काम करने वाले लोगों में भी चिंता देखी गई। घटनास्थल के पास कार्यरत एक व्यक्ति ने बताया कि हत्या की जानकारी मिलने के बाद वह बेहद चिंतित हो गया और इलाके की सुरक्षा को लेकर भय महसूस कर रहा है।
बताया जाता है कि गुरदीप सिंह दस वर्ष से अधिक समय पहले अमेरिका चले गए थे। उनकी मौत पर नॉर्थ अमेरिकन पंजाबी एसोसिएशन (NAPA) ने भी शोक व्यक्त किया है और पुलिस से मामले की पूरी सच्चाई सामने लाने की मांग की है।
एसोसिएशन के कार्यकारी निदेशक सतनाम सिंह चहल ने कहा कि किसी युवा पंजाबी या सिख व्यक्ति की हिंसक मौत केवल एक व्यक्तिगत त्रासदी नहीं होती, बल्कि उसके परिवार पर गहरा और स्थायी प्रभाव डालती है।
उन्होंने कहा कि ऐसी घटनाओं को अलग-अलग और सामान्य मामलों की तरह नजरअंदाज नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।
NAPA ने अधिकारियों से हत्या के पीछे की परिस्थितियों और संभावित उद्देश्य की निष्पक्ष जांच करने की अपील की।
संगठन ने आम लोगों से भी कहा कि जांच पूरी होने से पहले घटना के कारणों को लेकर अनुमान लगाने से बचना चाहिए।
फिलहाल पुलिस संदिग्ध हमलावर की पहचान करने, उसके फरार होने के रास्ते का पता लगाने और गोलीबारी से पहले हुई कथित झड़प के कारणों की जांच में जुटी है।
