BJP Challenges Omar Abdullah to Prove ‘MLA Poaching’ Charge or Apologise After Cash-for-Defection Allegation
Srinagar: A fresh political confrontation erupted in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah either produce evidence supporting his allegations of attempts to poach National Conference (NC) legislators or publicly withdraw the remarks.
The BJP dismissed the accusations as “baseless” and “irresponsible”, accusing the Chief Minister of making unfounded political claims.
The controversy began after Omar Abdullah alleged that efforts were underway to destabilise the National Conference-led government by persuading some of its legislators to defect.
According to him, inducements allegedly included large sums of money, ministerial positions, and assurances regarding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
Omar Claims MLA Was Offered ₹20–30 Crore to Switch Sides.
Addressing a workers’ convention at Hazratbal in Srinagar, the Chief Minister claimed that one of his party’s legislators from the Jammu region informed him about an alleged offer made during a private meeting.
According to Abdullah, the legislator was promised between ₹20 crore and ₹30 crore, a cabinet position, and support for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood if he agreed to leave the National Conference and support the BJP.
Without revealing the identity of either the legislator or the person who allegedly made the offer, Abdullah claimed that a Supreme Court lawyer associated with the BJP had conveyed the proposal during a closed-door meeting.
He asserted that attempts to divide the National Conference would not succeed, maintaining that none of his party’s legislators would compromise their principles for financial or political gain.
“Not a single MLA in our party will sell his conscience for ₹30 crore—or even ₹100 crore. We are accountable to the people and ultimately to God,” Abdullah said, while adding that the BJP would not be allowed to assume power in Jammu and Kashmir through what he described as “backdoor politics.”
Farooq Abdullah Echoes Concerns Over Alleged Attempts to Split Party
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah also claimed that efforts were allegedly being made to weaken the party by encouraging defections.
He said similar political attempts had been witnessed in previous years as well and expressed confidence that the organisation would remain united.
BJP Rejects Allegations, Demands Proof
Responding to the allegations, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi strongly rejected Omar Abdullah’s remarks, calling them “highly irresponsible” and “completely without evidence.”
Speaking to PTI, Trivedi said the Jammu and Kashmir BJP unit had unequivocally condemned the Chief Minister’s statement and challenged him to substantiate his allegations.
“If such serious accusations have been made, they must be supported with credible evidence. Otherwise, the Chief Minister should apologise publicly,” Trivedi said.
BJP Accuses Omar Government of Deflecting Attention
The BJP leader further alleged that the controversy was being created to divert public attention from what he described as shortcomings in the National Conference government’s functioning.
According to Trivedi, the allegations were an attempt to shift focus away from issues related to governance, administrative performance,e and public dissatisfaction.
He urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to concentrate on addressing people’s concerns instead of making what he termed politically motivated allegations against its opponents.

श्रीनगर: जम्मू-कश्मीर की राजनीति शनिवार को उस समय गरमा गई जब भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने मुख्यमंत्री ओमर अब्दुल्ला से उनके उस आरोप के समर्थन में प्रमाण प्रस्तुत करने या फिर सार्वजनिक रूप से माफी मांगने की मांग की, जिसमें उन्होंने भाजपा पर नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस (एनसी) के विधायकों को अपने पक्ष में करने की कोशिश करने का आरोप लगाया था।
भाजपा ने इन आरोपों को पूरी तरह निराधार और गैर-जिम्मेदाराना करार दिया।
विवाद की शुरुआत उस वक्त हुई जब मुख्यमंत्री ओमर अब्दुल्ला ने दावा किया कि उनकी सरकार को अस्थिर करने के उद्देश्य से एनसी के कुछ विधायकों को धन, मंत्री पद और जम्मू-कश्मीर को दोबारा राज्य का दर्जा दिलाने के आश्वासन जैसे प्रलोभन दिए जा रहे हैं।

श्रीनगर के हजरतबल में आयोजित पार्टी कार्यकर्ता सम्मेलन को संबोधित करते हुए मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि जम्मू क्षेत्र के उनकी पार्टी के एक विधायक ने उन्हें बताया कि एक बंद कमरे में हुई मुलाकात के दौरान उन्हें पार्टी बदलने के बदले 20 से 30 करोड़ रुपये, मंत्री पद और राज्य का दर्जा बहाल कराने का आश्वासन दिया गया।
हालांकि ओमर अब्दुल्ला ने न तो संबंधित विधायक का नाम बताया और न ही उस व्यक्ति की पहचान उजागर की, जिसने कथित तौर पर यह प्रस्ताव दिया।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि भाजपा से जुड़े एक सुप्रीम कोर्ट के वकील ने यह पेशकश की थी।
मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस में फूट डालने की हर कोशिश नाकाम रहेगी क्योंकि उनकी पार्टी का कोई भी विधायक धन या सत्ता के लालच में अपने सिद्धांतों से समझौता नहीं करेगा।
उन्होंने कहा, “हमारी पार्टी का एक भी विधायक 30 करोड़ तो क्या, 100 करोड़ रुपये के लिए भी अपना जमीर नहीं बेचेगा। हम जनता और ईश्वर—दोनों के प्रति जवाबदेह हैं।”
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि भाजपा को जम्मू-कश्मीर में “पिछले दरवाजे” से सत्ता हासिल नहीं करने दी जाएगी।
फारूक अब्दुल्ला ने भी जताई पार्टी तोड़ने की कोशिशों की आशंका
नेशनल कॉन्फ्रेंस के अध्यक्ष फारूक अब्दुल्ला ने भी आरोप लगाया कि पार्टी को कमजोर करने की कोशिशें की जा रही हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि अतीत में भी ऐसे प्रयास हुए थे, लेकिन पार्टी हर बार एकजुट रही और आगे भी मजबूती से खड़ी रहेगी।
भाजपा ने आरोपों को बताया बेबुनियाद, मांगे ठोस प्रमाण
इन आरोपों पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए भाजपा के राष्ट्रीय प्रवक्ता सुधांशु त्रिवेदी ने मुख्यमंत्री के बयान की कड़ी आलोचना की। उन्होंने कहा कि इतने गंभीर आरोप बिना किसी प्रमाण के लगाना पूरी तरह अनुचित है।
पीटीआई से बातचीत में त्रिवेदी ने कहा कि जम्मू-कश्मीर भाजपा इकाई ने मुख्यमंत्री के बयान की कड़ी निंदा की है और उनसे स्पष्ट रूप से कहा है कि यदि उनके पास कोई सबूत है तो उसे सार्वजनिक करें, अन्यथा अपने बयान के लिए माफी मांगें।
‘सरकार की विफलताओं से ध्यान हटाने की कोशिश’
सुधांशु त्रिवेदी ने आरोप लगाया कि मुख्यमंत्री ओमर अब्दुल्ला अपनी सरकार की कार्यप्रणाली, प्रशासनिक कमियों और जनहित के मुद्दों से लोगों का ध्यान हटाने के लिए इस तरह के राजनीतिक आरोप लगा रहे हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार को विपक्ष पर आरोप लगाने के बजाय सुशासन, विकास और जनता की समस्याओं के समाधान पर ध्यान देना चाहिए। साथ ही उन्होंने दोहराया कि यदि लगाए गए आरोपों के समर्थन में कोई प्रमाण नहीं है, तो मुख्यमंत्री को सार्वजनिक रूप से अपने बयान पर खेद व्यक्त करना चाहिए।
