Bobby Deol Revisits Gupt Shoot, Recalls How an Onion-Eating Scene Became a Comic Challenge
The actor shares an amusing behind-the-scenes memory from the 1997 thriller and looks ahead to Bandar and Alpha.
MUMBAI: A seemingly ordinary detail from the sets of Gupt became an enduring memory for Bobby Deol, who has now opened up about the unusual difficulty he faced while filming a romantic sequence with Manisha Koirala.
Looking back at the 1997 thriller during an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Deol recalled a sequence in which Koirala had to bite his chin during a song.
What made the moment particularly challenging, he said, was not the scene itself but the smell of onions on her breath.
The actor explained that the shoot took place during cold weather.
Someone near the location was selling chana zor garam, which Koirala was eating.
With the chin-biting portion of the song still to be filmed, Deol said he found it difficult to produce the expressions required for the shot.
The incident later inspired him to attempt a playful bit of retaliation during another scene.
Deol recalled that a new actor was required to confront and beat him in a college sequence.
He suggested that the newcomer eat onions before filming, apparently hoping that the smell would make Koirala react when the scene was performed.
His plan, however, did not work.
According to Deol, Koirala showed no different reaction when the shot was filmed despite his elaborate onion-based prank.
Recalling the episode years later, the actor laughed at his own youthful thinking, suggesting that such impulsive ideas were part of being young.
The anecdote offers a glimpse into the lighter moments that can emerge during film production, particularly from scenes that audiences eventually experience without knowing what happened behind the camera.
In this case, a small food-related incident became a story Deol still remembers from the making of Gupt.
The actor is now entering another phase of his career with projects that place him in markedly different settings from his 1990s work.
His upcoming film Bandar is set to introduce him as Sameer Mehra, an aspiring rockstar whose life is thrown into turmoil after he is accused of sexual assault.
Bandar also marks Deol’s first collaboration with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
The screenplay has been credited to Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, who have previously worked on projects including Paatal Lok, Khooshenabad and Udta Punjab.
The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on June 5, 2026.
Deol has another major project lined up soon after.
He will appear in Yash Raj Films’ spy thriller Alpha, which features Alia Bhatt and Sharvari.
The film is being positioned as a female-led entry in the spy-thriller space and is directed by Shiv Rawail.
Alpha is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 10.
