Imran Khan Health Row Deepens as Recommended Cardiac Scan Remains Pending
PTI says the jailed former Pakistani prime minister was examined at a government hospital but returned to Adiala Jail without a recommended CT coronary angiography, while the government maintains doctors found him medically fit.
A fresh dispute has erupted in Pakistan over the medical treatment of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, with his party alleging that a recommended cardiac investigation was not carried out despite a Supreme Court order concerning his examination and treatment.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has accused authorities of failing to ensure that Khan undergoes a CT coronary angiography, a scan recommended by doctors amid concerns about fluctuations in his blood pressure, heart palpitations and other symptoms.
Khan, 73, was reportedly examined by a government medical board on August 10 after he complained of palpitations and severe headaches.
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said the recommendation for a CT coronary angiography had been made earlier, on August 1, by a cardiologist at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
According to the party, the doctors considered the scan necessary because of Khan’s age, unstable blood pressure, reported restlessness and the potential risk of cardiac complications after prolonged isolation.
The controversy intensified after Khan was taken to PIMS on August 20 but returned to Adiala Jail without undergoing the recommended test.
PTI said hospital officials cited the unavailability of the required facility, a claim Akram disputed.
He alleged that PIMS had a CT scanner capable of conducting the examination and questioned why the procedure had not been completed.
PTI has demanded that Khan now be taken to Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital, where it wants the cardiac scan and any further examination to be conducted under independent specialists and in the presence of Khan’s personal medical team.
The party has also sought access to his complete medical records, including test results and diagnostic reports, for his family, doctors and legal representatives.
The disagreement has become more serious because of a Supreme Court direction issued on August 18.
A three-member bench comprising Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim had ordered Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital within two days for medical examination and treatment.
The court had also called for the formation of a specialised medical board to oversee his care.
But instead of being taken to Shifa, Khan was transported to the government-run PIMS on August 20.
PTI has questioned why the court-designated private hospital was bypassed. Akram said the authorities needed to explain why Khan was sent to a facility where the recommended test was allegedly not performed.
The government, however, has rejected suggestions that Khan was denied medical attention.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on X that Khan underwent a detailed examination by a team that included a cardiologist, an ophthalmologist and a physician.
According to Tarar, the doctors found the former prime minister medically fit, after which he was returned to Adiala Jail.
Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had earlier taken the position that, under the law, a convicted prisoner should receive treatment either in prison or at a government hospital.
The government had therefore favoured conducting Khan’s medical tests at a public facility.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry later said the government intended to comply fully with the Supreme Court’s direction and had no intention of obstructing or delaying the process.
Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, has also raised questions about the circumstances of his transfer for medical examination. She said she was called late at night and asked to come to Adiala Jail along with Khan’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan.
According to her account, she was later separated from the doctor and taken under police escort to PIMS.
When she asked why Khan had not been taken to Shifa International Hospital, she said she was told the visit related to a follow-up examination of his eye condition.
Khan has previously received treatment at PIMS for right central retinal vein occlusion, an eye condition that became publicly known in January.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an inquiry into the failure to conduct the recommended cardiac scan.
PTI has welcomed scrutiny of the matter but has demanded that the investigation establish why the test was not completed, whether there was a breakdown in coordination between authorities and why the Supreme Court’s direction regarding Shifa International Hospital was not followed.
Khan has remained in jail since August 2023 following convictions in several corruption-related cases.
The former prime minister, who was removed from office in 2022, has consistently described the cases against him as politically motivated.
The Pakistani government denies the allegations.
The latest medical controversy comes at a politically sensitive moment for Pakistan, with Khan’s detention continuing to shape the confrontation between the government and PTI.
The party has also announced plans for a protest march on September 27, to be led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
For PTI, the immediate issue remains Khan’s health and the pending cardiac investigation.
For the government, the focus is on the findings of its doctors and the inquiry ordered by the prime minister.
The dispute now centres on a key unanswered question: why was a test recommended by medical specialists not performed when Khan was taken to hospital?

पीटीआई सूचना सचिव शेख वकास अकरम के मुताबिक, पाकिस्तान इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल साइंसेज (पिम्स) के एक हृदय रोग विशेषज्ञ ने इससे पहले 1 अगस्त को सीटी कोरोनरी एंजियोग्राफी की सिफारिश की थी।
पीटीआई का कहना है कि खान की उम्र, रक्तचाप में उतार-चढ़ाव, बेचैनी और संभावित हृदय संबंधी जटिलताओं के जोखिम को देखते हुए यह जांच आवश्यक मानी गई थी।
विवाद उस समय और बढ़ गया जब 20 अगस्त को इमरान खान को पिम्स ले जाया गया, लेकिन अनुशंसित कार्डियक जांच कराए बिना उन्हें वापस अदियाला जेल भेज दिया गया।
पीटीआई ने दावा किया कि अस्पताल की ओर से आवश्यक उपकरण उपलब्ध नहीं होने की बात कही गई, जबकि पार्टी ने इस दलील पर सवाल उठाया।
शेख वकास अकरम ने कहा कि अस्पताल के रेडियोलॉजी विभाग में ऐसा सीटी स्कैनर मौजूद होने की जानकारी है, जिससे संबंधित जांच की जा सकती थी।
पार्टी ने अब मांग की है कि इमरान खान को शिफा इंटरनेशनल अस्पताल ले जाया जाए और वहां स्वतंत्र विशेषज्ञों के साथ-साथ उनके निजी डॉक्टरों की मौजूदगी में जांच कराई जाए।
पीटीआई ने यह भी कहा है कि खान की मेडिकल रिपोर्ट, जांच के नतीजे और अन्य डायग्नोस्टिक दस्तावेज उनके परिवार, निजी चिकित्सकों और वकीलों को उपलब्ध कराए जाने चाहिए।
इस विवाद को सुप्रीम कोर्ट के 18 अगस्त के आदेश ने और महत्वपूर्ण बना दिया है।
न्यायमूर्ति शाहिद वहीद, न्यायमूर्ति नईम अख्तर अफगान और न्यायमूर्ति इश्तियाक इब्राहिम की तीन सदस्यीय पीठ ने खान को दो दिन के भीतर शिफा इंटरनेशनल अस्पताल ले जाकर जांच और उपचार कराने का निर्देश दिया था।
अदालत ने उनकी चिकित्सा देखरेख के लिए विशेषज्ञों का एक विशेष मेडिकल बोर्ड बनाने को भी कहा था।
हालांकि, 20 अगस्त को इमरान खान को शिफा के बजाय सरकारी पी.आई.एम.एस. अस्पताल ले जाया गया। पीटीआई ने इसी फैसले पर गंभीर सवाल उठाए हैं।
सरकार ने आरोपों को खारिज करते हुए कहा है कि इमरान खान की विस्तृत चिकित्सा जांच की गई। सूचना मंत्री अताउल्लाह तरार ने सोशल मीडिया पर कहा कि एक नेत्र रोग विशेषज्ञ, हृदय रोग विशेषज्ञ और चिकित्सक समेत डॉक्टरों की टीम ने खान की जांच की और उन्हें चिकित्सकीय रूप से फिट पाया।
सरकार के अनुसार, जांच की प्रक्रिया पूरी होने के बाद उन्हें वापस अदियाला जेल भेज दिया गया।
कानून मंत्री आजम नजीर तरार ने पहले कहा था कि कानून के तहत दोषी करार दिए गए कैदी का उपचार जेल या सरकारी अस्पताल में किया जाना चाहिए।
सरकार ने इसी आधार पर खान की जांच सरकारी चिकित्सा संस्थान में कराने का पक्ष लिया था।
बाद में संसदीय कार्य मंत्री तारिक फजल चौधरी ने कहा कि सरकार का सुप्रीम कोर्ट के आदेश को टालने का कोई इरादा नहीं था और वह अदालत के निर्देशों का पालन करेगी।
इमरान खान की बहन उजमा खान ने भी अस्पताल ले जाने की प्रक्रिया पर सवाल उठाए हैं।
उनके अनुसार, उन्हें देर रात इमरान खान के निजी चिकित्सक डॉ. फैसल सुल्तान के साथ अदियाला जेल आने के लिए कहा गया था।
उजमा खान ने बताया कि बाद में उन्हें डॉ. सुल्तान से अलग कर पुलिस सुरक्षा में पिम्स ले जाया गया।
उन्होंने कहा कि शिफा इंटरनेशनल अस्पताल न ले जाने के बारे में पूछने पर उन्हें बताया गया कि यह इमरान खान की आंखों के उपचार से संबंधित फॉलो-अप जांच के लिए था।
इमरान खान पहले भी पिम्स में आंखों की बीमारी राइट सेंट्रल रेटिनल वेन ऑक्लूजन के संबंध में इलाज करा चुके हैं।
यह समस्या इस वर्ष जनवरी के अंत में सार्वजनिक रूप से सामने आई थी।
इस बीच, प्रधानमंत्री शहबाज शरीफ ने अनुशंसित कार्डियक टेस्ट न होने के कारणों की जांच के लिए एक जांच समिति गठित कर दी है।
पीटीआई का कहना है कि जांच केवल औपचारिकता नहीं होनी चाहिए, बल्कि यह स्पष्ट होना चाहिए कि चिकित्सा जांच क्यों नहीं हुई, विभिन्न विभागों के बीच कोई समन्वय संबंधी विफलता थी या नहीं और सुप्रीम कोर्ट के शिफा इंटरनेशनल अस्पताल संबंधी निर्देश पर अमल क्यों नहीं किया गया।
इमरान खान अगस्त 2023 से जेल में हैं। 2022 में सत्ता से हटाए जाने के बाद उन्हें कई भ्रष्टाचार मामलों में दोषी ठहराया गया।
खान का कहना है कि उनके खिलाफ मामले राजनीतिक बदले की भावना से प्रेरित हैं, जबकि सरकार इन आरोपों से इनकार करती है।
फिलहाल, इमरान खान की सेहत को लेकर राजनीतिक और कानूनी विवाद का केंद्र एक ही प्रश्न है—डॉक्टरों द्वारा जरूरी बताई गई कार्डियक जांच अस्पताल ले जाने के बावजूद आखिर क्यों नहीं की गई?
