BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh Dies at 55; Uttar Pradesh Assembly Loses Bahujan Samaj Party’s Lone Legislator
Three-time BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh passed away at 55 after battling cancer. His death leaves the Bahujan Samaj Party without representation in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly until a by-election is held.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Uma Shankar Singh passed away on Wednesday following a prolonged illness due to cancer.
He was 55. His demise marks the end of the BSP’s presence in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly until a by-election is conducted to fill the vacant seat.
Singh represented the Rasra Assembly constituency in Ballia district for three consecutive terms and had been receiving medical treatment in New Delhi as well as overseas during the past two years.
Despite prolonged health challenges, he continued to remain an influential political figure in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Uma Shankar Singh first entered the Uttar Pradesh Assembly after winning the Rasra seat in the 2012 Assembly elections.
He successfully defended the constituency again in 2017, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a sweeping electoral victory across the state.
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Singh retained the Rasra constituency for a third consecutive term.
He defeated Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) candidate Mahendra Chauhan by a margin of 6,583 votes, while BJP nominee Babban Rajbhar secured the third position.
His victory assumed greater political significance because it became the Bahujan Samaj Party’s only success in the 2022 Assembly elections, leaving the party with just a single member in the House during its weakest electoral performance in Uttar Pradesh.
Recognised as one of the BSP’s most prominent leaders in the Purvanchal region, Singh built a strong organisational base across Ballia and neighbouring districts.
Supporters frequently described him as a leader who remained accessible to ordinary people and actively intervened in public issues, earning him widespread popularity in the region.
Earlier this year, the Income Tax Department carried out searches at properties linked to Singh in Lucknow and Ballia.
The action triggered a political debate, with BSP president Mayawati describing the searches as unfortunate, while several opposition leaders questioned the timing of the operation, citing Singh’s prolonged medical condition.

बसपा के तीन बार के विधायक उमा शंकर सिंह का 55 वर्ष की आयु में कैंसर से निधन हो गया। उनके निधन के बाद उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा में बसपा का कोई विधायक नहीं बचा है और अब उपचुनाव के बाद ही पार्टी को प्रतिनिधित्व मिलेगा।
बहुजन समाज पार्टी (बसपा) के वरिष्ठ नेता एवं रसड़ा से विधायक उमा शंकर सिंह का बुधवार को कैंसर से लंबी बीमारी के बाद निधन हो गया। वह 55 वर्ष का था।
उनके निधन के साथ ही 403 सदस्यीय उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा में बसपा का प्रतिनिधित्व समाप्त हो गया है। अब इस सीट पर उपचुनाव होने के बाद ही पार्टी को पुनः प्रतिनिधित्व मिल सकेगा।
बलिया जिले की रसड़ा विधानसभा सीट का लगातार तीन बार प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले उमा शंकर सिंह पिछले दो वर्षों से नई दिल्ली और विदेश में उपचार करा रहे थे।
गंभीर स्वास्थ्य समस्याओं के बावजूद उन्होंने पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश की राजनीति में अपनी सक्रिय उपस्थिति बनाए रखी थी।
उमा शंकर सिंह ने वर्ष 2012 में पहली बार रसड़ा विधानसभा सीट जीतकर उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा में प्रवेश किया।
इसके बाद 2017 के चुनाव में भी उन्होंने अपनी सीट बरकरार रखी, जबकि उस चुनाव में भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) ने पूरे प्रदेश में व्यापक जीत दर्ज की थी।
वर्ष 2022 के विधानसभा चुनाव में उन्होंने लगातार तीसरी बार रसड़ा सीट पर विजय हासिल की।
उन्होंने सुहेलदेव भारतीय समाज पार्टी (एसबीएसपी) के प्रत्याशी महेंद्र चौहान को 6,583 मतों के अंतर से पराजित किया, जबकि भाजपा उम्मीदवार बब्बन राजभर तीसरे स्थान पर रहे।
यह जीत इसलिए भी विशेष महत्व रखती थी क्योंकि 2022 के विधानसभा चुनाव में बसपा पूरे प्रदेश में केवल इसी एक सीट पर विजयी हो सकी थी।
इस प्रकार उमा शंकर सिंह उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा में बसपा के एकमात्र विधायक बने और पार्टी के सबसे कठिन चुनावी दौर में भी उसका प्रतिनिधित्व करते रहे।
पूर्वांचल में बसपा के सबसे प्रभावशाली नेताओं में गिने जाने वाले उमा शंकर सिंह ने बलिया और आसपास के जिलों में मजबूत संगठनात्मक आधार तैयार किया था।
स्थानीय स्तर पर उन्हें ऐसे जनप्रतिनिधि के रूप में देखा जाता था, जो आम लोगों की समस्याओं में सक्रिय भूमिका निभाते थे।
इसी कारण क्षेत्र में उनके समर्थक उन्हें विशेष सम्मान और लोकप्रियता के साथ देखते थे।
इसी वर्ष आयकर विभाग ने लखनऊ और बलिया स्थित उनसे जुड़े परिसरों पर तलाशी अभियान चलाया था। इस कार्रवाई को लेकर राजनीतिक बहस छिड़ गई थी।
बसपा प्रमुख मायावती ने इसे दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण बताया था, जबकि विपक्षी नेताओं ने सिंह की लंबे समय से चल रही बीमारी का उल्लेख करते हुए कार्रवाई के समय पर सवाल उठाए थे।
