MILPITAS: Families in Kerala are facing an agonising wait for answers after the deaths of two women from the state in California, with a 32-year-old resident now in police custody and investigators examining the circumstances surrounding the two fatalities.
The victims have been identified as Anjana Hari from Mudikkode in Thrissur and Ann Mathew from Kesavadasapuram in Thiruvananthapuram.
Relatives have named a woman called Anila, originally from Kottayam and known to both women, as the person they suspect in connection with the deaths.
Authorities in California have yet to disclose a motive or publicly lay out the full circumstances of the case.
The investigation unfolded after Milpitas police were called to a road accident near the Mill Creek Apartments.
A woman was found critically injured in a parking area following what officers described as a hit-and-run.
Information from witnesses led investigators to look for a blue SUV that had reportedly left the area.
A matching vehicle was subsequently located nearby.
Investigators found damage on the SUV consistent with a collision and arrested the 32-year-old woman who was driving it. She is a resident of Milpitas.
The road incident is understood to have involved Anjana.
Her family initially received information that she had been badly injured and was receiving treatment.
It was only later that relatives learnt that she had died.
The circumstances surrounding Ann’s death are also being investigated.
Her family was informed that she had allegedly been attacked with a knife inside an apartment, according to information conveyed to relatives.
The two incidents have raised questions about whether they were part of the same sequence of events.
No official explanation has yet been given for why the women may have been targeted.
US authorities have also not publicly confirmed the allegations made by the victims’ relatives regarding Anila’s involvement.
The case has now drawn the attention of Indian authorities as the families begin arrangements to bring the victims home.
Union Minister Suresh Gopi said Monday that he had spoken with the Consul General at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco regarding the matter.
Efforts are being made to complete the formalities necessary for transporting the women’s remains to Kerala.
Funeral homes involved in the process have been asked to undertake the required documentation, Gopi said.
There is no confirmed timeline yet for the repatriation.
Investigators in the US may retain the bodies while evidence is collected and other procedures connected with the case are completed.
The Indian mission is expected to provide further information to the families once the authorities decide when the remains can be released.
The deaths have caused particular distress because the women were part of the Malayali community in the United States and had links to families in Kerala.
Relatives said Anjana and Ann’s families were acquainted with each other.
Anila, however, was not personally known to Ann’s relatives, who had interacted with her mainly through video calls.
The three women had been living and working in the United States in different occupations.
Anjana had moved there in 2021.
She leaves behind her husband, Vijeesh, and their six-year-old daughter.
With one suspect in custody, investigators are now expected to establish the sequence of events, determine how the two deaths may be connected, and establish the circumstances that preceded the fatal road incident.
Until those findings are made public, several key questions surrounding the case remain unanswered.

गोपी के अनुसार, अंतिम संस्कार से जुड़ी संस्थाओं को आवश्यक दस्तावेजी औपचारिकताएं पूरी करने के लिए कहा गया है।
