Centre Clears Appointments of Chief Justices for Eight High Courts
Eight senior judges to take charge of High Courts in Patna, Calcutta, Rajasthan, Bombay, Punjab and Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh
New Delhi, September 5, 2026: The leadership of eight High Courts across India is set for a change after the Central Government formally notified the appointment of new Chief Justices, completing the appointment process based on recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
The appointments span courts in Patna, Calcutta, Rajasthan, Bombay, Punjab and Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The new Chief Justices are expected to provide administrative continuity while overseeing the judicial functioning of their respective courts.
The judges appointed to the top positions are:
- Patna High Court: Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao
- Calcutta High Court: Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge
- Rajasthan High Court: Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal
- Bombay High Court: Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi
- Punjab & Haryana High Court: Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra
- Chhattisgarh High Court: Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra
- Madhya Pradesh High Court: Justice Alpesh Yeshwant Kogje
- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court: Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati
The notification marks the formal conclusion of the process for filling these eight Chief Justice posts.
The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier examined the candidature of senior High Court judges for elevation to the leadership positions.
The role carries responsibilities extending well beyond hearing and deciding cases.
A High Court Chief Justice is also responsible for important aspects of the institution’s internal administration, including the formation of benches and distribution of judicial and administrative assignments.
With the appointments now officially notified, the concerned High Courts are set to receive new leadership at a crucial institutional level.
The Centre’s decision is expected to contribute to smoother administration, consistency in functioning and greater stability within the eight courts.
The appointments therefore represent not merely a change in the presiding judges but also an important step in ensuring continuity in the judicial and administrative management of some of the country’s key High Courts.

नई दिल्ली, 5 सितंबर 2026: देश के आठ महत्वपूर्ण उच्च न्यायालयों में मुख्य न्यायाधीशों की नियुक्ति का रास्ता साफ हो गया है।
केंद्र सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट कॉलेजियम की सिफारिशों के आधार पर इन नियुक्तियों को औपचारिक रूप से अधिसूचित कर दिया है।
नई व्यवस्था के तहत पटना, कलकत्ता, राजस्थान, बॉम्बे, पंजाब एवं हरियाणा, छत्तीसगढ़, मध्य प्रदेश तथा जम्मू-कश्मीर और लद्दाख हाईकोर्ट को नए मुख्य न्यायाधीश मिलेंगे।
इन नियुक्तियों से संबंधित अदालतों के न्यायिक कामकाज के साथ-साथ प्रशासनिक व्यवस्था में भी निरंतरता आने की उम्मीद है।
नियुक्त किए गए न्यायाधीशों की सूची इस प्रकार है:
- पटना हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति वल्लुरी कामेश्वर राव
- कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति रविंद्र वी. घुगे
- राजस्थान हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति संजय कुमार अग्रवाल
- बॉम्बे हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति महेश चंद्र त्रिपाठी
- पंजाब एवं हरियाणा हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति अश्वनी कुमार मिश्रा
- छत्तीसगढ़ हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति कृष्ण राम महापात्र
- मध्य प्रदेश हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति अल्पेश यशवंत कोगजे
- जम्मू-कश्मीर एवं लद्दाख हाईकोर्ट: न्यायमूर्ति पुष्पेंद्र सिंह भाटी
इन नियुक्तियों के साथ आठों उच्च न्यायालयों में मुख्य न्यायाधीश के पदों को भरने की प्रक्रिया पूरी हो गई है।
इससे पहले सुप्रीम कोर्ट कॉलेजियम ने वरिष्ठ हाईकोर्ट न्यायाधीशों को इन महत्वपूर्ण पदों पर पदोन्नत किए जाने के प्रस्तावों पर विचार किया था।
मुख्य न्यायाधीश की जिम्मेदारी केवल अदालत में मामलों की सुनवाई और फैसलों तक सीमित नहीं होती। हाईकोर्ट के प्रशासन को सुचारु रूप से चलाने में भी इस पद की अहम भूमिका रहती है।
पीठों का गठन करने से लेकर न्यायिक और प्रशासनिक कार्यों के आवंटन तक कई महत्वपूर्ण फैसले मुख्य न्यायाधीश के स्तर पर लिए जाते हैं।
केंद्र की अधिसूचना जारी होने के बाद अब इन आठ अदालतों में नेतृत्व परिवर्तन की प्रक्रिया औपचारिक रूप से पूरी हो चुकी है।
इससे न्यायिक संस्थानों के प्रशासन में स्थिरता और कामकाज में निरंतरता बनाए रखने में मदद मिलने की उम्मीद है।
इन नियुक्तियों को देश की न्यायिक व्यवस्था में महत्वपूर्ण प्रशासनिक कदम के रूप में देखा जा रहा है।
नए मुख्य न्यायाधीश अपने-अपने उच्च न्यायालयों के न्यायिक कार्यों के साथ संस्थागत प्रशासन की जिम्मेदारी भी संभालेंगे।
