Dharmendra Pradhan Breaks Silence After Resignation, Says Gen Z Was ‘Misled’
Former Education Minister says office never mattered to him; defends record and takes swipe at Naveen Patnaik
BHUBANESWAR: Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has spoken publicly for the first time since leaving the Union Cabinet, defending his decision to step down while arguing that young Indians who joined the recent education protests may have been influenced by people seeking to divert their concerns.
Addressing a gathering at GM University in Bhubaneswar, Pradhan said India’s youth should not be viewed through the prism of political confrontation.
He described Gen Z as the country’s own younger generation and said their ambitions would ultimately shape India’s future.
His remarks came about two weeks after he resigned as Education Minister on July 25 following sustained protests over the NEET-UG controversy and demands for accountability in the examination system.
The agitation, led prominently by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), had brought thousands of protesters to the streets and put mounting political pressure on the government.
‘The post was never important to me’
Pradhan said he had personally approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered to relinquish his place in the Union Council of Ministers.
Rather than portraying his departure as a setback, the Sambalpur MP suggested that public office was secondary to the larger objective of serving the country.
He pointed to India’s enormous young population and said successive generations of children would carry forward the country’s ambitions.
He argued that the aspirations of young Indians should be protected and expressed confidence that the country’s youth could play a central role in India’s emergence as a global power.
Pradhan rejects idea that Gen Z itself was the problem
The former minister’s comments appeared aimed at distinguishing between the young people who participated in the agitation and what he described as attempts to influence them.
Pradhan said he had no personal grievance against Gen Z, while alleging that some individuals had sought to misdirect young protesters during the controversy.
His remarks come after a youth-led campaign over examination irregularities grew into a major political movement.
The CJP’s agitation eventually culminated in Pradhan’s resignation, which had been one of the protesters’ principal demands.
Resignation followed mounting pressure
Pradhan’s departure came after weeks of demonstrations linked to the NEET-UG 2026 paper-leak controversy and wider concerns over the credibility of India’s competitive examination system.
The government had initially attempted to address the crisis through administrative and examination-related measures, but the protests continued.
Reports at the time said the Centre had also explored changing Pradhan’s portfolio before his resignation, but protesters continued to insist that his removal from the Education Ministry was necessary.
The resignation was eventually submitted to Prime Minister Modi on July 25. Pralhad Joshi subsequently received additional charge of the Education Ministry.
Pradhan remains active in the political arena
Despite leaving the Cabinet, Pradhan has continued to be visible in Parliament and public events.
During the Monsoon Session, NDA MPs welcomed him in Parliament, signalling that his resignation had not pushed him out of the BJP’s political mainstream.
His latest remarks also suggest that he intends to remain politically engaged rather than retreat from public life.

At another public gathering, Pradhan turned his attention to former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, responding to criticism from Biju Janata Dal supporters.
BJD youth and student activists had staged a demonstration near an airport and raised slogans demanding that Pradhan leave Odisha.
Pradhan dismissed the criticism, invoking his rural background and saying that being asked to leave would not deter him from returning.
He also challenged Patnaik’s criticism of his record and asked whether he had ever done anything that brought shame to Odisha.
The former minister said he might not have brought as much recognition to the state as some expected, but insisted that his public work had never been intended to damage Odisha’s reputation.
Education controversy continues beyond Pradhan’s exit
Pradhan’s resignation has not ended the broader debate triggered by the NEET-UG controversy.
The episode has intensified scrutiny of India’s examination system, the role of testing agencies and the safeguards used to prevent question-paper leaks.
The youth movement that pushed for his departure has also kept wider demands concerning students and examination reforms in the public debate.
The government subsequently agreed to additional demands raised by the CJP, including assurances concerning protesters and compensation for families affected by student suicides.
Pradhan’s first major public comments since leaving office indicate that, while he has accepted the political consequence of the crisis, he remains keen to defend his intentions, his record and his relationship with India’s younger generation.

उन्होंने अपने इस्तीफे को लेकर सफाई देते हुए कहा कि भारत के युवाओं को लेकर उनकी कोई व्यक्तिगत शिकायत नहीं है, लेकिन NEET विवाद के दौरान कुछ लोगों ने युवाओं को प्रभावित करने और उन्हें गलत दिशा में ले जाने की कोशिश की।
भुवनेश्वर स्थित जीएम यूनिवर्सिटी के एक कार्यक्रम में बोलते हुए प्रधान ने देश की युवा पीढ़ी को भारत की भविष्य की ताकत बताया।
उन्होंने कहा कि युवाओं की आकांक्षाएं देश की दिशा तय करेंगी और उन्हें राजनीतिक टकराव के नजरिये से नहीं देखा जाना चाहिए।
प्रधान की यह टिप्पणी 25 जुलाई को शिक्षा मंत्री पद से इस्तीफा देने के करीब दो सप्ताह बाद आई है। उनका इस्तीफा NEET-UG परीक्षा में कथित अनियमितताओं और पेपर लीक के विरोध में चल रहे छात्र आंदोलन के बीच हुआ था।

उन्होंने अपने राजनीतिक भविष्य को लेकर किसी तरह की निराशा व्यक्त करने के बजाय यह संकेत दिया कि उनके लिए मंत्री पद से अधिक महत्वपूर्ण देश और समाज के प्रति उनकी जिम्मेदारी है।
संबलपुर से लोकसभा सांसद प्रधान ने भारत की विशाल युवा आबादी का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि आने वाली पीढ़ियां देश की महत्वाकांक्षाओं को आगे बढ़ाएंगी।
उन्होंने युवाओं की क्षमता पर भरोसा जताते हुए भारत के वैश्विक प्रभाव को मजबूत करने में उनकी भूमिका पर जोर दिया।
Gen Z पर नहीं, उसे प्रभावित करने वालों पर निशाना
प्रधान की ताजा टिप्पणी का एक महत्वपूर्ण पहलू यह था कि उन्होंने प्रदर्शन में शामिल युवाओं और उन्हें प्रभावित करने वाले लोगों के बीच अंतर करने की कोशिश की।
उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें Gen Z से कोई व्यक्तिगत समस्या नहीं थी। उनका आरोप था कि आंदोलन के दौरान कुछ लोगों ने युवाओं को गुमराह करने का प्रयास किया।
NEET-UG 2026 विवाद से शुरू हुआ छात्र असंतोष धीरे-धीरे व्यापक आंदोलन में बदल गया था। दिल्ली समेत कई स्थानों पर प्रदर्शन हुए और अंततः प्रधान का इस्तीफा आंदोलन की सबसे प्रमुख मांगों में से एक बन गया।
लगातार बढ़ते दबाव के बीच गया था इस्तीफा
प्रधान का इस्तीफा ऐसे समय आया जब NEET-UG 2026 के कथित पेपर लीक और देश की प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं की विश्वसनीयता को लेकर सरकार पर लगातार दबाव बढ़ रहा था।
सरकार की ओर से परीक्षा व्यवस्था में सुधार और प्रशासनिक स्तर पर कई कदम उठाए गए, लेकिन आंदोलन थमा नहीं।
उस समय ऐसी रिपोर्टें भी सामने आई थीं कि केंद्र ने प्रधान का मंत्रालय बदलने जैसे विकल्प पर विचार किया था, लेकिन प्रदर्शनकारी शिक्षा मंत्री के पद से उनके हटने की मांग पर कायम रहे।
आखिरकार 25 जुलाई को प्रधान ने प्रधानमंत्री मोदी को अपना इस्तीफा सौंप दिया। बाद में प्रह्लाद जोशी को शिक्षा मंत्रालय का अतिरिक्त प्रभार दिया गया।
इस्तीफे के बाद भी राजनीतिक सक्रियता जारी
मंत्रिपद छोड़ने के बावजूद प्रधान सार्वजनिक जीवन से दूर नहीं हुए हैं।
संसद के मानसून सत्र के दौरान NDA सांसदों ने उनका स्वागत किया था, जिससे संकेत मिला कि इस्तीफे के बावजूद भाजपा के राजनीतिक ढांचे में उनकी भूमिका बनी हुई है।
भुवनेश्वर में उनकी ताजा टिप्पणी भी यही संकेत देती है कि वह सक्रिय राजनीति से पीछे हटने के बजाय सार्वजनिक मुद्दों पर अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करते रहेंगे।
‘मैं किसान का बेटा हूं’: नवीन पटनायक पर पलटवार
एक अन्य कार्यक्रम में प्रधान ने ओडिशा के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री नवीन पटनायक पर भी निशाना साधा।
यह प्रतिक्रिया उस प्रदर्शन के संदर्भ में थी जिसमें बीजू जनता दल के युवा और छात्र कार्यकर्ताओं ने हवाई अड्डे के पास उनके खिलाफ प्रदर्शन किया था और उनके वापस जाने के नारे लगाए थे।
प्रधान ने अपने ग्रामीण पारिवारिक पृष्ठभूमि का उल्लेख करते हुए कहा कि उन्हें वापस जाने के लिए कहा जाए, तब भी वह लौटकर आएंगे।
उन्होंने पटनायक की ओर से की गई उनकी आलोचना का जवाब देते हुए सवाल किया कि क्या उन्होंने कभी ऐसा कोई काम किया है जिससे ओडिशा के लोगों को शर्मिंदगी उठानी पड़ी हो।
उन्होंने कहा कि भले ही वह राज्य के लिए अपेक्षित स्तर की उपलब्धियां हासिल न कर पाए हों, लेकिन उन्होंने अपने काम से ओडिशा की प्रतिष्ठा को नुकसान पहुंचाने वाला कोई कार्य नहीं किया।
प्रधान के जाने के बाद भी NEET विवाद जारी
प्रधान का इस्तीफा NEET विवाद का अंत नहीं है।
इस पूरे घटनाक्रम ने भारत की प्रतियोगी परीक्षा व्यवस्था, परीक्षा कराने वाली संस्थाओं और पेपर लीक रोकने की तैयारियों पर गंभीर बहस को जन्म दिया है।
प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग करने वाले युवा आंदोलन ने भी छात्रों से जुड़े अन्य मुद्दों और परीक्षा सुधारों को बहस के केंद्र में ला दिया।
सरकार ने बाद में CJP की अन्य मांगों पर भी सहमति जताई, जिनमें प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई और NEET विवाद से प्रभावित परिवारों के लिए मुआवजे से जुड़े मुद्दे शामिल थे।
इस्तीफे के बाद धर्मेंद्र प्रधान की पहली विस्तृत सार्वजनिक प्रतिक्रिया से साफ है कि वह संकट की राजनीतिक जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार करने के साथ-साथ अपने फैसले, अपने कार्यकाल और देश की युवा पीढ़ी के साथ अपने संबंधों का बचाव भी करना चाहते हैं।
