NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance have discussed ways to broaden cooperation between India and the United States, with trade, defence, energy security and strategic technologies featuring prominently in their latest conversation.
Modi said on Saturday that Vance telephoned him for discussions on strengthening the two countries’ Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The conversation comes against the backdrop of continuing instability in West Asia, which has heightened international concerns over energy supplies and regional security.
The Indian government said the two leaders took stock of developments in their bilateral relationship and agreed on the need to maintain momentum across several strategic areas.
Trade and defence remain central
According to the government, Modi and Vance reiterated their intention to deepen collaboration in trade and defence, while also expanding cooperation in critical and emerging technologies.
The discussions also covered critical minerals, an area that has become increasingly important for advanced manufacturing, clean-energy systems, electronics and defence production.
Energy security was another major component of the conversation, particularly significant at a time when instability in West Asia continues to pose risks to international energy markets.

The conversation also included a personal exchange.
Modi congratulated Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, on the birth of their son and conveyed his best wishes to the family.
The Prime Minister subsequently shared details of the call on social media, describing the discussion as part of efforts to advance cooperation across key areas of the bilateral relationship.
Call comes amid shifting West Asian dynamics
Vance’s conversation with Modi took place shortly after Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan entered into a mutual defence agreement, an arrangement that has attracted attention amid the continuing conflict and realignment of strategic relationships in West Asia.
However, neither the Indian government nor the information released about the Modi-Vance conversation indicated that the new defence arrangement was a subject of their discussion.
