Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns as Education Minister Amid NEET-UG Row; Says Decision Taken to Protect Students’ Future and National Unity
Bringing an end to weeks of intense political and public pressure, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Narendra Modi government on Saturday following widespread student protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, particularly the paper leak controversy.
The announcement came after sustained demonstrations in Delhi demanding that he accept moral responsibility for the crisis.
Announcing a post on social media platform X, Pradhan said his decision was guided by the larger interests of students and the country.
In his resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he stated that he wanted to ensure that anti-national elements did not exploit the situation unfolding at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere, while also preventing students from becoming entangled in prolonged legal disputes that could distract them from their education and careers.
Reflecting on his long public life, Pradhan said he had devoted more than four decades to the cause of education, teachers and students.
He described an inclusive, forward-looking and robust education system as the cornerstone of a strong nation, adding that fulfilling the aspirations of India’s youth had always remained a moral commitment throughout his political journey.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Education Ministry, Pradhan said it had been a privilege to serve under the Prime Minister’s leadership.
He acknowledged that irregularities surfaced during the NEET-UG examination conducted on May 3, 2026, after which the Centre immediately transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), cancelled the examination and announced a fresh test.
He also noted that the government had decided to shift the examination to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format from next year to enhance transparency and security.
Describing the government’s response to the crisis, the former minister said ensuring a smooth examination for more than 20 lakh candidates became the administration’s highest priority.
He credited the successful conduct of the re-examination on June 21, 2026, to a coordinated “whole-of-government approach”, highlighting the contribution of the Union government, state administrations, district authorities, students and parents.
Accepting personal accountability for the developments from the very beginning, Pradhan said he never attempted to distance himself from the controversy.
He maintained that his constant objective had been to prevent deserving students from becoming victims of organised examination fraud while ensuring that no genuine candidate suffered injustice because of the actions of the examination mafia.
Referring to the declaration of the revised NEET-UG results on July 16, he said the outcome reflected the hard work of students from all sections of society, including many from economically weaker backgrounds who secured outstanding results.
According to him, the successful completion of the examination process demonstrated the resilience of India’s students despite the challenges.
Voicing disappointment over the political developments that followed, Pradhan alleged that certain individuals occupying responsible positions attempted to create obstacles and mislead students during the crisis.
He said such actions had caused him deep emotional distress, even though he continued to place complete faith in India’s democratic institutions and in the aspirations of the country’s youth.
Observing that the developments of the past ten days had deeply saddened him, the former minister emphasised that the issue was never about personal prestige or political office.
Describing young Indians as the nation’s greatest strength, he said he remained determined to ensure that students were not drawn into confusion or uncertainty.
Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, Pradhan said his foremost concern was to safeguard national unity and prevent any attempt by anti-national forces to exploit the ongoing protests.
He added that he also wanted to ensure that students did not become trapped in prolonged legal proceedings and instead remained focused on their academic pursuits and future careers.
Keeping these considerations in mind, he said, he had submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister.
Concluding his letter, Pradhan thanked the Prime Minister for his trust, guidance and unwavering support throughout his tenure.
He also expressed appreciation for his colleagues in the Union Council of Ministers, officials of the Education Ministry and everyone who had worked alongside him.
Declaring that service to the nation would continue to remain the highest priority of his life, he said he would keep contributing to public life with the blessings of Lord Jagannath, while working for the welfare of Odisha, the country’s youth and the nation as a whole.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had consistently demanded Pradhan’s resignation, welcomed the development as a major victory for its campaign.
In its first public reaction, the organisation declared, “The Education Minister has submitted his resignation. Chhatra Shakti Zindabad,” describing the decision as a triumph of student power.
Addressing journalists soon afterwards, CJP leader Dipke asserted that the resignation demonstrated the strength of democratic protests.
He remarked that when citizens refuse to surrender to pressure or intimidation, they possess the ability to hold even the most powerful individuals accountable.
Shortly afterwards, the organisation uploaded a video on Instagram showing jubilant scenes from Jantar Mantar, where supporters celebrated the announcement while Dipke was seen speaking on his mobile phone amid the gathering.
The movement had begun in Delhi last month and steadily gathered momentum after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk launched a hunger strike in support of the students.
Although Wangchuk withdrew his fast earlier this week, the CJP refused to dilute its campaign and repeatedly declared that nothing short of Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation would satisfy the protesters.
Throughout the agitation, the organisation maintained three principal demands — the resignation of the Education Minister, financial assistance for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the NEET controversy, and an assurance that no criminal or legal proceedings would be initiated against protesters.
Following the second round of discussions between government representatives and CJP leaders on Friday, the organisation claimed that the Centre had agreed in principle to two of these demands while indicating that a final decision on Pradhan’s continuation in office would be taken later.
Less than a day afterwards, the minister stepped down.
The controversy originated after the NEET-UG examination was conducted on May 3, 2026. Allegations of a paper leak prompted the government to cancel the examination on May 12 and order a fresh test, triggering nationwide outrage.
The issue gathered further momentum after reports of several aspirants dying by suicide. A re-examination was successfully conducted on June 21, while the revised results were declared earlier this month.

लगातार कई सप्ताह तक चले छात्र आंदोलन और NEET-UG परीक्षा में कथित अनियमितताओं, विशेषकर प्रश्नपत्र लीक विवाद, को लेकर बढ़ते राजनीतिक दबाव के बीच केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान ने शनिवार को अपने पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया।
दिल्ली में जारी व्यापक विरोध प्रदर्शनों के बीच उनकी नैतिक जिम्मेदारी तय करने की मांग लगातार तेज होती जा रही थी और अंततः उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को अपना इस्तीफा सौंप दिया।
सोशल मीडिया मंच ‘एक्स’ पर अपने त्यागपत्र की जानकारी साझा करते हुए प्रधान ने कहा कि उनका यह निर्णय देशहित और विद्यार्थियों के उज्ज्वल भविष्य को सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता देते हुए लिया गया है।
प्रधानमंत्री को संबोधित अपने पत्र में उन्होंने लिखा कि जंतर-मंतर तथा देश के अन्य हिस्सों में बने हालात का कोई भी राष्ट्रविरोधी तत्व लाभ न उठा सके, राष्ट्रीय एकता बनी रहे और छात्रों का भविष्य लंबी कानूनी प्रक्रियाओं में उलझने के बजाय उनकी पढ़ाई और करियर पर केंद्रित रहे—इन्हीं उद्देश्यों को ध्यान में रखते हुए उन्होंने इस्तीफा दिया है।
अपने सार्वजनिक जीवन का उल्लेख करते हुए प्रधान ने कहा कि पिछले चार दशकों से अधिक समय से उनका जीवन शिक्षा, शिक्षकों और विद्यार्थियों की सेवा के लिए समर्पित रहा है।
उनके अनुसार एक सशक्त, समावेशी और दूरदर्शी शिक्षा व्यवस्था ही मजबूत राष्ट्र की आधारशिला होती है तथा देश के युवाओं के सपनों को साकार करना सदैव उनकी नैतिक प्रतिबद्धता रही है।
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के प्रति आभार व्यक्त करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि उनके नेतृत्व में देश की सेवा करने का अवसर मिलना उनके लिए सम्मान की बात रही।
उन्होंने स्वीकार किया कि 3 मई 2026 को आयोजित NEET-UG परीक्षा में अनियमितताएं सामने आने के बाद केंद्र सरकार ने तत्काल मामले की जांच केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो (CBI) को सौंप दी, परीक्षा रद्द की और पुनर्परीक्षा कराने का निर्णय लिया।
साथ ही उन्होंने बताया कि अगले वर्ष से यह परीक्षा पूरी तरह कंप्यूटर आधारित परीक्षा (CBT) प्रणाली के माध्यम से आयोजित करने का फैसला भी लिया गया है।
पूर्व शिक्षा मंत्री ने कहा कि संकट की इस घड़ी में सरकार की सबसे बड़ी प्राथमिकता 20 लाख से अधिक विद्यार्थियों के लिए निष्पक्ष और सुचारु परीक्षा सुनिश्चित करना था।
उन्होंने बताया कि केंद्र सरकार, राज्य सरकारों, जिला प्रशासन, अभिभावकों और विद्यार्थियों के सहयोग से 21 जून 2026 को पुनर्परीक्षा सफलतापूर्वक सम्पन्न कराई गई, जो पूरे सरकारी तंत्र के समन्वित प्रयास का परिणाम थी।
पूरे घटनाक्रम की व्यक्तिगत जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार करते हुए प्रधान ने कहा कि उन्होंने शुरुआत से ही परिस्थितियों से कभी मुंह नहीं मोड़ा।
उनका संकल्प था कि परीक्षा माफिया के कारण किसी भी मेधावी छात्र का भविष्य बर्बाद नहीं होने दिया जाएगा और किसी भी पात्र अभ्यर्थी के साथ अन्याय नहीं होने दिया जाएगा।
16 जुलाई को घोषित संशोधित NEET-UG परिणामों का उल्लेख करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि इस परीक्षा में समाज के सभी वर्गों, विशेषकर आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर परिवारों के अनेक प्रतिभाशाली विद्यार्थियों ने उल्लेखनीय सफलता हासिल की।
उनके अनुसार यह परिणाम देश के युवाओं की मेहनत और संकल्प का प्रमाण है।
घटनाक्रम पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए प्रधान ने कहा कि कुछ जिम्मेदार पदों पर बैठे लोगों ने पूरे विवाद के दौरान छात्रों को भ्रमित करने और व्यवस्था में बाधाएं उत्पन्न करने का प्रयास किया, जिससे उन्हें गहरा मानसिक कष्ट पहुंचा।
इसके बावजूद उन्होंने लोकतंत्र और देश के युवाओं की शक्ति पर अपना अटूट विश्वास दोहराया।
पिछले दस दिनों की घटनाओं का उल्लेख करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि इन परिस्थितियों ने उन्हें अत्यंत व्यथित किया है।
उनके लिए यह कभी व्यक्तिगत प्रतिष्ठा का प्रश्न नहीं रहा, बल्कि देश की युवा शक्ति को भ्रम और टकराव से दूर रखना ही उनकी सबसे बड़ी प्राथमिकता रही है।
अपने इस्तीफे के पीछे की वजह स्पष्ट करते हुए प्रधान ने कहा कि उनका उद्देश्य राष्ट्रीय एकता की रक्षा करना, किसी भी राष्ट्रविरोधी ताकत को मौजूदा हालात का फायदा उठाने से रोकना और यह सुनिश्चित करना है कि विद्यार्थियों का समय न्यायालयों के चक्कर लगाने में नहीं बल्कि शिक्षा और करियर निर्माण में लगे।
इन्हीं सभी पहलुओं पर विचार करने के बाद उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री को अपना इस्तीफा सौंपने का निर्णय लिया।
अपने पत्र के अंत में उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के मार्गदर्शन, विश्वास और निरंतर सहयोग के लिए आभार व्यक्त किया। साथ ही केंद्रीय मंत्रिपरिषद के सहयोगियों, शिक्षा मंत्रालय के अधिकारियों और उन सभी लोगों का धन्यवाद किया जिनके साथ उन्हें कार्य करने का अवसर मिला।
उन्होंने कहा कि राष्ट्रसेवा उनके जीवन का सर्वोच्च उद्देश्य है और भगवान श्रीजगन्नाथ के आशीर्वाद से वे भविष्य में भी ओडिशा, देश के युवाओं और मातृभूमि की सेवा के लिए निरंतर समर्पित रहेंगे।
लंबे समय से धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग कर रही कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (CJP) ने इस घटनाक्रम का स्वागत करते हुए इसे छात्र आंदोलन की बड़ी जीत बताया। संगठन ने अपनी पहली प्रतिक्रिया में कहा, “शिक्षा मंत्री ने इस्तीफा दे दिया है। छात्र शक्ति जिंदाबाद।”
बाद में मीडिया से बातचीत में CJP नेता दीपके ने कहा कि यह इस्तीफा लोकतांत्रिक जनशक्ति की ताकत का प्रमाण है। उन्होंने कहा कि यदि जनता भयभीत हुए बिना अपने अधिकारों के लिए डटी रहे तो किसी भी पद पर बैठे व्यक्ति से जवाबदेही तय कराई जा सकती है।
इसके कुछ ही समय बाद संगठन ने इंस्टाग्राम पर जंतर-मंतर का एक वीडियो साझा किया, जिसमें समर्थक खुशी मनाते दिखाई दिए और दीपके भी प्रदर्शनकारियों के बीच मोबाइल फोन पर बातचीत करते नजर आए।
दिल्ली में पिछले महीने शुरू हुआ यह आंदोलन समय के साथ लगातार व्यापक होता गया। जलवायु कार्यकर्ता सोनम वांगचुक के आमरण अनशन शुरू करने के बाद इसे और अधिक जनसमर्थन मिला।
हालांकि वांगचुक ने इस सप्ताह अपना अनशन समाप्त कर दिया, लेकिन CJP ने स्पष्ट कर दिया था कि धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे से कम पर आंदोलन समाप्त नहीं होगा।
आंदोलन के दौरान संगठन ने तीन प्रमुख मांगें रखीं—शिक्षा मंत्री का इस्तीफा, NEET विवाद के बाद आत्महत्या करने वाले छात्रों के परिवारों को मुआवजा तथा प्रदर्शनकारियों के विरुद्ध किसी भी प्रकार की कानूनी कार्रवाई न किए जाने की गारंटी।
शुक्रवार को सरकार और CJP के बीच हुई दूसरी बैठक के बाद संगठन ने दावा किया था कि उसकी दो मांगों पर केंद्र ने सिद्धांततः सहमति व्यक्त कर दी है, जबकि शिक्षा मंत्री के भविष्य पर अंतिम निर्णय बाद में लिया जाएगा। लगभग 24 घंटे के भीतर धर्मेंद्र प्रधान ने इस्तीफा दे दिया।
पूरा विवाद 3 मई 2026 को आयोजित NEET-UG परीक्षा के बाद शुरू हुआ। प्रश्नपत्र लीक के आरोप सामने आने पर केंद्र सरकार ने 12 मई को परीक्षा रद्द कर दी और पुनर्परीक्षा कराने की घोषणा की।
इस निर्णय के बावजूद देशभर में विरोध प्रदर्शन तेज हो गए, विशेषकर कई अभ्यर्थियों की आत्महत्या की खबरों के बाद। अंततः 21 जून को पुनर्परीक्षा आयोजित की गई और संशोधित परिणाम इसी महीने घोषित किए गए।
