Donald Trump Declares Iran Interim Agreement ‘Over’ After Fresh US Strikes, Oil Prices Jump Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
Ankara/Washington: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signalled that the interim understanding between Washington and Tehran had effectively come to an end, even as he indicated that diplomatic engagement with Iran had not been completely abandoned.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the two-day NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said he no longer believed the temporary agreement had any practical value.
Responding to questions about the status of the arrangement, Trump remarked that, in his view, the deal was effectively finished and continuing discussions with Iran were proving to be unproductive.
Despite his comments, he suggested that diplomatic channels would remain open for further negotiations if circumstances changed.
Trump’s remarks came only hours after the United States carried out a fresh wave of military strikes on more than 80 Iranian military targets, following attacks on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Alongside the military operation, Washington also revoked a licence that had permitted certain Iranian oil sales under the interim arrangement, marking another sharp escalation in tensions.
In a statement released on social media, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces had launched a coordinated series of precision strikes aimed at imposing a high cost on those responsible for targeting commercial ships carrying civilian crews in international waters.
The command described the operation as part of efforts to protect freedom of navigation along one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
According to the US military, the strikes targeted Iranian air defence systems, radar installations and more than 60 small boats operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Reports also indicated explosions in several Iranian locations, including Bandar Mahshahr and Bushehr. In response, Iran reportedly launched retaliatory attacks targeting Bahrain and Kuwait, further intensifying the regional confrontation.
The latest military exchange has raised fresh concerns that the conflict could once again spiral into a broader confrontation.
The renewed hostilities have cast doubt over the future of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two countries on June 17, which had temporarily reduced tensions and created hopes for a negotiated settlement.
The escalation has also coincided with the six-day funeral ceremonies for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose death, according to the report, occurred on February 28, the opening day of the conflict.
The overlapping political and military developments have added to uncertainty across the Middle East.
Global energy markets reacted swiftly to the renewed tensions. According to the Associated Press (AP), international oil prices climbed sharply after Trump’s comments and the latest military developments.
Brent crude rose by around 5.4 per cent, crossing 78 US dollars per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the US benchmark crude, gained approximately 5.8 per cent to trade at about 74.55 US dollars per barrel.
The sharp increase reversed the recent decline in oil prices, which had fallen below the 100-dollar-per-barrel mark and returned close to pre-conflict levels.
Analysts said growing uncertainty over shipping security in the Gulf once again pushed investors towards higher energy prices.
As part of the interim arrangement reached earlier, Washington and Tehran had agreed to allow commercial vessels to transit the Strait of Hormuz without paying transit-related charges for a period of 60 days.
The strategically vital waterway carries nearly 20 per cent of the world’s traded energy supplies, making any disruption to shipping a matter of significant global economic concern.
With the latest escalation, uncertainty over the future of this critical maritime corridor has increased once again.

हालांकि उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि शांति प्रयासों और वार्ता के दरवाजे पूरी तरह बंद नहीं हुए हैं। तुर्किये की राजधानी अंकारा में आयोजित दो दिवसीय नाटो शिखर सम्मेलन के दौरान पत्रकारों से बातचीत में ट्रंप ने कहा कि उनकी नजर में यह समझौता अब व्यावहारिक रूप से खत्म हो चुका है।
युद्धविराम और अंतरिम व्यवस्था की स्थिति पर पूछे गए सवाल के जवाब में ट्रंप ने कहा कि उन्हें अब नहीं लगता कि इस समझौते का कोई विशेष महत्व बचा है और ईरान के साथ लगातार बातचीत करना समय की बर्बादी साबित हो रहा है।
हालांकि उन्होंने यह भी संकेत दिया कि भविष्य में परिस्थितियां अनुकूल होने पर बातचीत की संभावना पूरी तरह समाप्त नहीं हुई है।
ट्रंप की यह टिप्पणी ऐसे समय आई जब कुछ घंटे पहले ही अमेरिका ने हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य से गुजर रहे व्यावसायिक जहाजों पर हुए हमलों के बाद ईरान के 80 से अधिक सैन्य ठिकानों पर व्यापक सैन्य कार्रवाई की।
इसके साथ ही वॉशिंगटन ने अंतरिम समझौते के तहत ईरानी तेल की बिक्री की अनुमति देने वाला लाइसेंस भी रद्द कर दिया, जिससे दोनों देशों के बीच तनाव और बढ़ गया।
अमेरिकी सेंट्रल कमांड (CENTCOM) ने सोशल मीडिया पर जारी बयान में कहा कि यह सैन्य अभियान अंतरराष्ट्रीय जलमार्ग में निर्दोष नागरिकों को लेकर जा रहे व्यापारिक जहाजों पर हमलों का जवाब देने और ऐसे हमलों की कीमत चुकाने के उद्देश्य से चलाया गया।
अमेरिका ने इसे वैश्विक समुद्री व्यापार की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने की कार्रवाई बताया।
अमेरिकी सेना के अनुसार अभियान के दौरान ईरान की वायु रक्षा प्रणालियों, रडार नेटवर्क तथा इस्लामिक रिवोल्यूशनरी गार्ड कॉर्प्स (IRGC) की 60 से अधिक छोटी नौकाओं को निशाना बनाया गया। रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक बंदर महशहर और बुशेहर सहित कई स्थानों पर विस्फोट हुए। इसके जवाब में ईरान ने कथित रूप से बहरीन और कुवैत को निशाना बनाते हुए जवाबी कार्रवाई की।
दोनों देशों के बीच ताजा सैन्य कार्रवाई ने इस आशंका को फिर बढ़ा दिया है कि संघर्ष एक बार फिर व्यापक रूप ले सकता है। हालिया घटनाक्रम ने 17 जून को हुए उस समझौता ज्ञापन (Memorandum of Understanding) के भविष्य पर भी सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं, जिसने कुछ समय के लिए तनाव कम करने में भूमिका निभाई थी।
यह घटनाक्रम ऐसे समय सामने आया है जब ईरान के सर्वोच्च नेता अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई के छह दिवसीय अंतिम संस्कार की प्रक्रिया जारी है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार उनका निधन 28 फरवरी को संघर्ष के पहले दिन हुआ था।
राजनीतिक और सैन्य घटनाओं के एक साथ सामने आने से पूरे मध्य पूर्व में अनिश्चितता और बढ़ गई है।
वैश्विक ऊर्जा बाजारों ने भी इस तनाव पर तुरंत प्रतिक्रिया दी। एसोसिएटेड प्रेस (AP) के अनुसार ट्रंप के बयान और ताजा सैन्य कार्रवाई के बाद अंतरराष्ट्रीय कच्चे तेल की कीमतों में तेज उछाल दर्ज किया गया।
ब्रेंट क्रूड की कीमत लगभग 5.4 प्रतिशत बढ़कर 78 डॉलर प्रति बैरल के पार पहुंच गई, जबकि अमेरिकी मानक डब्ल्यूटीआई (WTI) करीब 5.8 प्रतिशत चढ़कर 74.55 डॉलर प्रति बैरल पर पहुंच गया।
इस तेजी से पहले तेल की कीमतें घटकर 100 डॉलर प्रति बैरल से नीचे आ गई थीं और युद्ध से पहले के स्तर के करीब पहुंच चुकी थीं। विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य में बढ़ते सुरक्षा जोखिमों ने एक बार फिर वैश्विक ऊर्जा बाजारों में अस्थिरता बढ़ा दी है।
अंतरिम समझौते के तहत अमेरिका और ईरान ने 60 दिनों तक हॉर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य से गुजरने वाले व्यापारिक जहाजों से किसी प्रकार का पारगमन शुल्क नहीं लेने पर सहमति बनाई थी।
दुनिया की लगभग 20 प्रतिशत ऊर्जा आपूर्ति इसी समुद्री मार्ग से होकर गुजरती है। ऐसे में इस क्षेत्र में बढ़ता तनाव न केवल वैश्विक समुद्री व्यापार बल्कि तेल और गैस बाजारों पर भी व्यापक प्रभाव डाल सकता है।
