Flydubai Pilot Attack: Oman National Copilot Identified, Probe Finds Israel Crash Allegation

DUBAI: The co-pilot accused of attacking Flydubai captain Smit Machhar during a flight has been identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam Al-Hammami, according to US and Israeli media reports.

Investigators have reportedly been told that Al-Hammami wanted the aircraft to be brought down in Israel. The United Arab Emirates has classified the incident as a terrorist attack.

Three people familiar with the investigation, including diplomats from the Gulf region and a Western country, have confirmed the identity of the co-pilot, according to reports.

The circumstances surrounding his employment history and alleged extremist views are now also being examined by investigators.

Sources cited in the reports said Al-Hammami had previously worked with Oman Air but was allegedly moved away from flying duties after the airline became aware of his visits to extremist websites.

He was subsequently assigned administrative responsibilities, according to the claims.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said on Saturday that the co-pilot had attempted to seize control of the aircraft as part of what authorities described as a terrorist attack.

The assault reportedly began inside the cockpit on Wednesday, when Al-Hammami allegedly used an emergency axe to strike Captain Machhar before attempting to take control of the aircraft while it was descending rapidly.

Captain Machhar’s Account of the Attack

During questioning by UAE investigators, Captain Machhar reportedly described how the confrontation unfolded inside the cockpit. According to his account, Al-Hammami first asked for time to perform prayers.

Machhar said that roughly five minutes later, he was struck forcefully on the back of his head. Further blows followed, leaving him fighting to regain control of the situation.

The captain reportedly tried to open the cockpit door, but Al-Hammami initially prevented him from doing so. Machhar said he realised that he had little choice but to make a final attempt to fight back and force the door open.

He eventually managed to get the door open, after which people were waiting outside, according to his account. The captain’s testimony forms a key part of the investigation into how the alleged attack unfolded and how control of the aircraft was ultimately maintained.

Questions Raised Over Copilot’s Aviation Qualification

The investigation has also raised questions about Al-Hammami’s educational and professional background. One diplomat familiar with the matter said the 29-year-old had joined Flydubai about eight months before the incident.

He reportedly obtained a degree in aviation management through distance learning from Buckinghamshire New University in Britain in 2023. However, the university has clarified that it does not offer a pilot-training programme.

The distinction is significant because an aviation-management qualification is not, by itself, evidence of professional pilot training or flight certification.

Investigators are expected to examine his qualifications, employment history and the circumstances under which he was authorised to serve as a co-pilot.

यूएई के अटॉर्नी जनरल हमाद सैफ अल शम्सी ने शनिवार को कहा कि सह-पायलट ने कथित आतंकी हमले के दौरान विमान पर नियंत्रण हासिल करने का प्रयास किया था।

अधिकारियों के अनुसार, बुधवार को कॉकपिट के भीतर कैप्टन मच्छार पर आपातकालीन कुल्हाड़ी से हमला किया गया और इसके बाद तेजी से नीचे जा रहे विमान का नियंत्रण अपने हाथ में लेने की कोशिश की गई।

कैप्टन मच्छार ने जांचकर्ताओं को क्या बताया

यूएई के जांच अधिकारियों के सामने कैप्टन मच्छार ने कथित हमले की घटनाओं का सिलसिलेवार विवरण दिया। उनके मुताबिक, हम्मामी ने पहले नमाज़ अदा करने के लिए कुछ समय मांगा था।

मच्छार के बयान के अनुसार, करीब पांच मिनट बाद उनके सिर के पिछले हिस्से पर अचानक जोरदार वार किया गया। इसके बाद भी हमले जारी रहे और उन्हें अपनी सुरक्षा के साथ-साथ विमान के नियंत्रण को बनाए रखने के लिए संघर्ष करना पड़ा।

कैप्टन ने जांचकर्ताओं को बताया कि उन्होंने कॉकपिट का दरवाजा खोलने की कोशिश की, लेकिन हम्मामी ने शुरुआत में उसे दोबारा बंद कर दिया। इसके बाद मच्छर ने आखिरी प्रयास करते हुए हमलावर का सामना किया और किसी तरह दरवाजा खोलने में सफल रहा।

उनके अनुसार, दरवाजा खुलने के बाद बाहर कुछ लोग मौजूद थे। कैप्टन का यह बयान जांच का अहम हिस्सा माना जा रहा है, क्योंकि इससे कॉकपिट के भीतर हुई पूरी घटना और विमान का नियंत्रण बनाए रखने की परिस्थितियों को समझने में मदद मिल सकती है।

सह-पायलट की डिग्री को लेकर भी उठे सवाल

जांच में हम्मामी की शैक्षणिक योग्यता और विमानन क्षेत्र में उसके प्रशिक्षण को लेकर भी सवाल सामने आए हैं। मामले से परिचित एक राजनयिक के अनुसार, वह घटना से करीब आठ महीने पहले Flydubai से जुड़ा था।

बताया गया है कि उसने 2023 में ब्रिटेन की Buckinghamshire New University से दूरस्थ शिक्षा के माध्यम से एविएशन मैनेजमेंट में डिग्री हासिल की थी। हालांकि, विश्वविद्यालय ने स्पष्ट किया है कि उसके पाठ्यक्रमों में पायलट प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम शामिल नहीं है।

ऐसे में एविएशन मैनेजमेंट की डिग्री और पेशेवर पायलट प्रशिक्षण के बीच अंतर महत्वपूर्ण हो जाता है। जांच एजेंसियां अब उसकी शैक्षणिक योग्यता, पूर्व रोजगार, विमानन प्रशिक्षण और सह-पायलट के रूप में उसकी नियुक्ति से संबंधित परिस्थितियों की जांच कर रही हैं।
