Flydubai FZ1073 Crisis: Unidentified Pilots Among Passengers Played Key Role in Emergency Landing

Two pilots travelling to Tel Aviv for their next assignment unexpectedly became the flight’s lifeline after a cockpit assault left the aircraft in a dangerous descent.

DUBAI: What began as an ordinary journey for two airline pilots turned into an unexpected fight to save hundreds of lives when Flydubai flight FZ1073 was thrown into chaos following a violent cockpit confrontation.

The two pilots were not part of the flight’s operating crew. They were travelling in the cabin as passengers, apparently on their way to another assignment.

Their names have not been released publicly, but their presence aboard the Boeing aircraft became critically important after the regular cockpit crew could no longer safely manage the emergency.

The flight was carrying the two additional pilots because they were expected to operate the aircraft on a subsequent sector between Tel Aviv and Dubai.

Such repositioning of crew is a routine part of commercial aviation and is generally referred to as deadheading or crew positioning.

Neither pilot could have expected that their scheduled journey would suddenly place them at the centre of an unfolding aviation emergency.

A desperate struggle inside the cockpit

The crisis erupted after the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the flight deck. Passengers became aware that something was seriously wrong when they heard disturbances and realised that the captain was being assaulted.

Machchhar, although badly injured, succeeded in opening the cockpit door. That breakthrough allowed passengers to intervene.

According to passenger Daniel Schlichter, several people rushed towards the cockpit. One of them managed to pull the attacker away, while others helped restrain him.

The priority then shifted from overpowering the attacker to preventing the aircraft from becoming uncontrollable.

One of the two pilots travelling in the cabin pushed his way through the group and reached the flight controls. His colleague followed him into the cockpit soon afterwards.

Once inside, the pair shut the cockpit door and concentrated on the aircraft rather than the chaos unfolding behind them.

The aircraft had already lost enormous altitude.

By the time the additional pilots reached the controls, FZ1073 was in a highly unstable state.

The aircraft had been cruising at roughly 34,000 feet when it began a precipitous descent. According to Reuters, it lost more than 16,000 feet in little over 30 seconds.

The violent manoeuvre had consequences for the aircraft itself, with part of the rudder reportedly breaking away.

The two pilots faced the immediate challenge of recovering the aircraft while dealing with the consequences of the cockpit attack.

Passenger accounts indicate that it took several minutes before they were able to bring the aircraft under control.

A Mayday call was subsequently made as the pilots assessed where they could safely land.

They ultimately chose Tabuk in Saudi Arabia as the emergency diversion point.

Passengers had no idea who was flying the plane

The rescue effort inside the cockpit created a new problem in the cabin: passengers did not initially know whether the men who had taken over the controls were authorised crew members.

Schlichter said there was little or no communication with those in the cabin after the cockpit door was secured.

That silence created fresh anxiety. According to his account, he began wondering whether the men had taken control for reasons unrelated to the rescue operation.

He feared the aircraft could be diverted somewhere else, including towards Iran.

The uncertainty reportedly continued for roughly three-quarters of an hour.

The tension eased only when the pilots communicated their plan to land at Tabuk and reassured passengers that they were safe.

For those aboard, that announcement finally confirmed that the two unknown men in the cockpit were working to save the flight rather than endanger it.

A routine airline procedure became crucial.

The episode has drawn attention to an otherwise little-known aspect of airline operations.

Airlines regularly have to move pilots between airports so they can operate flights from their next assigned location. Instead of travelling separately, crew members can occupy passenger seats on another flight.

This is commonly called deadheading, while the broader operational term is crew positioning.

That is apparently why the two pilots were aboard FZ1073.

Their scheduled role had nothing to do with the flight’s original operation.

Yet when the normal cockpit crew became embroiled in the emergency, their presence provided the aircraft with two trained professionals who could step forward immediately. The airline keeps identities confidential.

Flydubai has confirmed that crew members travelling aboard the aircraft assisted in recovering the situation and completing the emergency landing. The carrier has not, however, released the names of the two pilots who intervened.

The lack of public identification has left passengers and aviation observers with few details about the men who ultimately assumed responsibility for the aircraft.

Schlichter, who witnessed the events from near the front of the cabin, described the pilot who first reached the controls as a hero.

For the passengers, the significance of the two men was not their original assignment but the timing of their presence.

Had they not been travelling on the aircraft, the flight would have faced an even more difficult situation after both members of its operating cockpit crew became involved in the confrontation.

The investigation into the cockpit assault and the circumstances surrounding the dramatic descent and emergency landing remains underway.
