The retired Army intelligence officer who once led the secretive Technical Support Division has taken an unexpected turn towards cinema, portraying an older Neem Karoli Baba in the surprise 2026 hit

NEW DELHI: Few career transitions could be more unexpected than that of Colonel Munishwar Nath “Hunny” Bakshi.

After spending decades in military intelligence, including a stint at the helm of the Indian Army’s secretive Technical Support Division, the retired officer has now appeared before cinema audiences in the robes of one of India’s best-known spiritual figures.

Bakshi plays the older Neem Karoli Baba, or Maharaj Ji, in Vishal Chaturvedi’s Hanuman Ansh.

The film, which opened in August 2026, has become a major box-office success despite being made on a relatively small budget.

Recent reports have put its worldwide collection above ₹300 crore, with the film continuing its theatrical run well after its initial release.

The casting has attracted particular curiosity because Bakshi’s life away from the screen bears little resemblance to the serene spiritual persona he portrays.

From military intelligence to the movie camera

Bakshi entered the Army’s Military Intelligence Corps in December 1988 after training at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun.

His service included assignments in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, and he was later awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal.

He commanded a Military Intelligence unit in Kolkata between 2007 and 2010.

His most prominent assignment came in 2010, when he was selected to head the Technical Support Division, an ad hoc intelligence unit established during General V.K. Singh’s tenure as Army chief.

The unit operated from Delhi Cantonment and dealt with intelligence-gathering and covert capabilities. It was subsequently disbanded in 2012.

That chapter of his military career later became the subject of controversy and official scrutiny.

Reports have referred to allegations concerning the unit’s activities and to subsequent disciplinary proceedings involving Bakshi.

His General Court Martial proceedings were ultimately dropped in 2018 after a plea challenging the proceedings on procedural grounds, according to accounts of his career.

Bakshi subsequently left the Army prematurely in November 2019.

A script brought him to cinema.

Retirement opened a completely different avenue for the former intelligence officer. After settling in Dehradun, Bakshi began working on scripts for web projects.

It was while seeking advice from filmmaker Vishal Chaturvedi on one of his scripts that the unexpected acting opportunity emerged.

Chaturvedi was developing Hanuman Ansh and, according to accounts of how the casting came about, noticed a physical resemblance between Bakshi and Neem Karoli Baba.

Rather than looking for another actor for the older version of the saint, the filmmaker offered the role to Bakshi.

Bakshi accepted, but approached the role as more than an ordinary acting assignment.

He reportedly gave up non-vegetarian food and alcohol while preparing for the film and until its release.

A brief appearance with an unusual significance

Bakshi does not dominate Hanuman Ansh. The principal portrayal of the younger Neem Karoli Baba is by Shobhinav Satya, while Bakshi appears as the older Maharaj Ji in the film’s framing portion. Chandan Anand plays Dr Ram Nandan Bhosale.

Yet the appearance has become one of the film’s talking points precisely because the actor is not a conventional screen performer.

The man seen portraying a spiritual teacher spent much of his professional life working in a field where secrecy, intelligence gathering and military discipline were central to his duties.

Bakshi has indicated that his involvement could extend beyond the first film. The makers have confirmed work on a sequel, with the project conceived as part of a larger story around Neem Karoli Baba.

From a quiet opening to a box-office phenomenon

The film’s commercial journey has been almost as unexpected as Bakshi’s casting.

Hanuman Ansh arrived without the scale of a conventional big-budget Hindi release. Its early theatrical performance was relatively modest, but audience word-of-mouth gradually changed its fortunes.

By September, reports were describing it as one of the year’s major surprise successes, with worldwide earnings crossing ₹300 crore.

The film’s success has also brought renewed public attention to Neem Karoli Baba and his legacy.

Reports have highlighted the response from Baba’s family, including his daughter Girija Devi, who has reportedly watched the film multiple times and become emotional during screenings.

For Bakshi, the success has provided an unlikely second public identity.

The former officer remains active on security issues

His appearance in a spiritual film has not marked a complete departure from the subjects that defined his public profile after retirement.

Bakshi has continued to speak in interviews about national security, military affairs and his experiences in intelligence.

He has discussed subjects ranging from Kashmir and the Technical Support Division to contemporary security challenges.

His public appearances have included discussions on radicalisation and internal security, including participation in the ANI National Security Summit in 2025.

That means his transition into cinema has not erased his earlier identity.

Instead, the film has placed two very different aspects of his life side by side: the retired intelligence officer familiar with military and security debates, and the screen performer appearing as a revered spiritual figure.

An unlikely chapter in an unconventional career

Bakshi’s journey from Military Intelligence to filmmaking and then to the portrayal of Neem Karoli Baba is an unusual second act for a retired Army officer.

For the moment, his role in Hanuman Ansh remains relatively brief.

But the unexpected casting has made him one of the film’s most intriguing off-screen stories, particularly as the movie has continued to attract audiences.

Whether cinema becomes a larger part of Bakshi’s future remains to be seen.

For now, however, the former intelligence officer has added an entirely different chapter to a career that had, for most of its military years, unfolded far from the public gaze.

कभी सेना की बेहद गोपनीय गतिविधियों से जुड़े रहे बख्शी अब बड़े पर्दे पर नीम करोली बाबा यानी महाराज जी की भूमिका निभाते दिखाई दे रहे हैं।

वह निर्देशक विशाल चतुर्वेदी की फिल्म हनुमान अंश में उम्रदराज नीम करोली बाबा का किरदार निभा रहे हैं। अगस्त 2026 में रिलीज हुई इस फिल्म ने अपेक्षाकृत छोटे बजट के बावजूद बॉक्स ऑफिस पर उल्लेखनीय प्रदर्शन किया है।

सितंबर में सामने आई रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक फिल्म की दुनियाभर की कमाई 300 करोड़ रुपये के पार पहुंच चुकी थी।

हनी बख्शी की चर्चा केवल फिल्म की सफलता के कारण नहीं हो रही है। असल वजह उनकी निजी और पेशेवर पृष्ठभूमि है, जो पर्दे पर निभाए जा रहे शांत और आध्यात्मिक किरदार से बिल्कुल अलग दिखाई देती है।

सेना में शुरू हुआ था सफर

बख्शी को दिसंबर 1988 में इंडियन मिलिट्री अकादमी, देहरादून से प्रशिक्षण के बाद मिलिट्री इंटेलिजेंस कोर में कमीशन मिला था। उनकी सैन्य सेवा में जम्मू-कश्मीर और पूर्वोत्तर के संवेदनशील क्षेत्रों में तैनाती शामिल रही।

उन्हें विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल भी प्रदान किया गया। 2007 से 2010 के बीच उन्होंने कोलकाता की एक मिलिट्री इंटेलिजेंस यूनिट की कमान संभाली।

उनके करियर का सबसे चर्चित अध्याय 2010 में आया, जब तत्कालीन सेना प्रमुख जनरल वीके सिंह के कार्यकाल में उन्हें टेक्निकल सपोर्ट डिवीजन यानी TSD की कमान सौंपी गई।

यह एक अस्थायी खुफिया इकाई थी, जो दिल्ली कैंट में काम करती थी। बाद में 2012 में इस यूनिट को बंद कर दिया गया।

TSD से जुड़े कार्यों और बाद की घटनाओं को लेकर बख्शी का नाम विवादों और आधिकारिक जांच के संदर्भ में भी सामने आया।

उनके खिलाफ अनुशासनात्मक कार्रवाई से जुड़ी कार्यवाही हुई, हालांकि 2018 में प्रक्रियागत आधार पर दायर याचिका के बाद कोर्ट मार्शल की कार्यवाही समाप्त हो गई, जैसा कि उनके करियर से संबंधित प्रकाशित विवरणों में बताया गया है।

इसी सिलसिले में वह अपनी एक स्क्रिप्ट लेकर फिल्म निर्देशक विशाल चतुर्वेदी से सलाह लेने पहुंचे थे। यहीं से उनके लिए अभिनय का एक अप्रत्याशित रास्ता खुल गया।

चतुर्वेदी नीम करोली बाबा पर हनुमान अंश बना रहे थे। बख्शी से मुलाकात के दौरान निर्देशक को उनके चेहरे-मोहरे में बाबा की समानता दिखाई दी और उन्होंने उन्हें फिल्म में उम्रदराज बाबा की भूमिका निभाने का प्रस्ताव दिया।

बख्शी ने यह प्रस्ताव स्वीकार किया। बताया जाता है कि भूमिका के लिए उन्होंने फिल्म की रिलीज तक मांसाहार और शराब से दूरी बनाए रखने का फैसला किया।

किरदार छोटा, लेकिन चर्चा बड़ी

हनुमान अंश में बख्शी का स्क्रीन टाइम लंबा नहीं है। युवा नीम करोली बाबा की भूमिका शोभिनव सत्य ने निभाई है, जबकि बख्शी फिल्म में उम्रदराज महाराज जी के रूप में दिखाई देते हैं। चंदन आनंद ने डॉक्टर राम नंदन भोसले का किरदार निभाया है।

फिल्म की लोकप्रियता ने नीम करोली बाबा के जीवन और उनकी आध्यात्मिक विरासत को भी फिर से चर्चा में ला दिया है। मीडिया रिपोर्टों के अनुसार बाबा की बेटी गिरिजा देवी ने फिल्म को कई बार देखा और प्रत्येक बार भावुक हुईं।

राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा पर भी सक्रिय आवाज

सिनेमा में आने के बावजूद बख्शी ने राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा से जुड़े विषयों पर अपनी सार्वजनिक सक्रियता बंद नहीं की है।

रिटायरमेंट के बाद वह विभिन्न इंटरव्यू में सैन्य मामलों, राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा, कश्मीर और मिलिट्री इंटेलिजेंस से जुड़े अपने अनुभवों पर बात करते रहे हैं। टेक्निकल सपोर्ट डिवीजन से लेकर समकालीन सुरक्षा चुनौतियों तक कई मुद्दों पर उन्होंने अपनी बात रखी है।

2025 में उन्होंने ANI नेशनल सिक्योरिटी समिट में आंतरिक सुरक्षा और ‘द एनिमी विदिन’ जैसे विषयों पर भी चर्चा की थी।

इस तरह हनुमान अंश में उनका प्रवेश उनके पुराने सार्वजनिक व्यक्तित्व को खत्म नहीं करता, बल्कि उसमें एक नया आयाम जोड़ता है।

करियर का सबसे अलग अध्याय

मिलिट्री इंटेलिजेंस अधिकारी से एक गोपनीय सैन्य इकाई के कमांडर, फिर स्क्रिप्ट लेखक और अब अभिनेता बनने तक हनी बख्शी की यात्रा सामान्य करियर कहानी से काफी अलग है।

हनुमान अंश में उनका किरदार भले ही सीमित हो, लेकिन फिल्म की अप्रत्याशित सफलता ने उन्हें एक बार फिर राष्ट्रीय चर्चा में ला दिया है।
