From Parking Dispute to Murder: Faridabad Shooting Highlights Deadly Consequences of Everyday Road Rage

Singapore-based corporate executive Paramjith Dhankhar was killed by his neighbour in Faridabad; the incident once again raises concerns over violent confrontations triggered by parking rows and road rage.

FARIDABAD: A disagreement over where to park a vehicle should ordinarily end with an argument, perhaps a complaint to the housing society or a brief exchange of angry words.

But in Faridabad, a neighbourhood parking dispute allegedly turned into a shooting that claimed the life of a visiting corporate executive.

The killing is another grim reminder of how disputes over vehicles and shared spaces can escalate into murder or leave people with life-threatening injuries.

Paramjith Dhankhar, 42, who was employed as a senior vice-president with a Vietnam-based IT company and worked in Singapore, was shot dead outside his residence in Sector 21C on Friday night.

His neighbour, Mohan Sharma, has been arrested in connection with the killing.

The incident reportedly stemmed from friction between the two households over the use of common areas in their residential building.

Investigators said the families had clashed on several occasions over the ground-floor space, including the parking area.

A disagreement involving a pet dog in the common parking space had reportedly triggered another argument just four or five days before the fatal attack.

The confrontation reached a deadly point at around 8.30 pm on November 6. According to the complaint filed by Dhankhar’s son, Sharma called the executive downstairs, asking him to move his vehicle.

When Dhankhar and his son, Shaurya, reached the parking area, an argument broke out. Sharma allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired repeatedly.

While Dhankhar was struck by several bullets, his son managed to escape by taking cover behind parked vehicles.

Police believe that 15 to 16 rounds were discharged, with eight or nine bullets hitting Dhankhar in the chest and torso. He was taken to hospital but could not be saved.

The tragedy was particularly devastating for the family because Dhankhar had returned to India only a day earlier.

A native of Hisar, he had arrived in Faridabad on November 5 to attend his nephew’s wedding later this month.

Before taking up his current position, he had served as Asia-Pacific regional business head for Tech Mahindra in Australia.

The alleged shooter remained at large until Saturday evening, when a team from the Sector-30 Crime Branch arrested Sharma near DLF Chowk in Ballabgarh.

The police operation was led by Inspector Anil Kumar.

Police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Yashpal Yadav said preliminary questioning suggested that the neighbours had a history of quarrels over relatively minor matters.

Investigators are preparing to seek Sharma’s police remand for detailed questioning and recovery of evidence.

An FIR has been registered at Surajkund police station under sections relating to murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and the Arms Act.

Police are also searching for Sharma’s wife, two children and brother, who have been named in the complaint and are reportedly untraceable.

Station House Officer Inspector Prahlad Kumar said the post-mortem examination was completed on Saturday.

The victim’s family, he added, was in no condition to speak to the media before the last rites.

The Faridabad shooting brings into focus a recurring concern in urban neighbourhoods: disputes that begin with parking spaces, vehicle movement or access to shared areas can become dangerous when tempers overwhelm restraint.

Road rage incidents, too, have repeatedly demonstrated how a moment of anger can result in fatal attacks or serious injuries.

The police investigation will establish the precise sequence of events and the role of those named in the complaint.

But the broader lesson is already stark: no disagreement over a parking space or a vehicle can justify violence, let alone the taking of a human life.
