The National Film Awards ceremony has moved to Gujarat for its 72nd edition, prompting questions from opposition leaders over the venue and the Centre’s plan to take the event across India.

For decades, the National Film Awards were closely associated with New Delhi. That association changed this year when the 72nd edition was staged at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat’s Narmada district on September 22.

President Droupadi Murmu attended the ceremony and presented the top honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 to veteran actor Anant Nag.

The relocation has become a political talking point, with opposition leaders challenging the choice of Gujarat while the Centre has described the move as part of an effort to take the awards to different parts of the country.

The awards have traditionally been presented in the national capital, with Vigyan Bhawan serving as the principal venue since the awards began in 1954. The 17th edition, held in Chennai in 1971, was an earlier departure from that pattern.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray questioned the need to select Gujarat when several other cities have longstanding links with the film industry.

He referred to Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru as possible locations for a national cinema-related event.

Sanjay Raut, another senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, called on film personalities to reconsider attending the Gujarat ceremony. He also alleged that the timing and location could have a connection with Gujarat’s political cycle, including the forthcoming Assembly elections.

The Centre has not accepted that interpretation. Its stated rationale is to widen the geographical footprint of the awards and take the ceremony to different parts of India. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said major tourist destinations will also be considered for future editions.

The decision has attracted attention within the film fraternity as well. Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia questioned the reasoning behind selecting Gujarat if the objective was simply to move the event away from Delhi.

He pointed to Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad as places with substantial contributions to Indian cinema.

NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule has also argued for New Delhi, citing its role as the country’s capital.

The Gujarat BJP has defended the venue.

A party spokesperson said the National Film Awards should not be regarded as belonging to any particular state and accused the opposition of objecting to Gujarat’s development.

Ekta Nagar provides a particularly recognisable backdrop for the event. The town is home to the Statue of Unity, the 597-foot monument dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The ceremony honoured achievements in Indian cinema during 2024. Article 370 received the Best Feature Film honour, while Mammootty for Bramayugam and Kartik Aaryan for Chandu Champion shared the Best Actor award.

राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों की शुरुआत 1954 में हुई थी। इसके बाद ज्यादातर समारोह नई दिल्ली में आयोजित किए गए। हालांकि 1971 में 17वें समारोह के लिए चेन्नई को चुना गया था। इस लिहाज से इस साल का गुजरात आयोजन भी लंबे अंतराल के बाद राजधानी से बाहर हुआ प्रमुख समारोह है।

शिवसेना (यूबीटी) प्रमुख उद्धव ठाकरे ने गुजरात के चयन पर सवाल उठाते हुए कहा कि भारतीय सिनेमा से गहरा रिश्ता रखने वाले दूसरे शहरों को भी मौका दिया जा सकता था। उन्होंने मुंबई, कोलकाता और बेंगलुरु जैसे शहरों का उल्लेख किया।

शिवसेना (यूबीटी) सांसद संजय राउत ने इस फैसले का विरोध करते हुए फिल्म जगत से जुड़े लोगों से समारोह में शामिल होने पर पुनर्विचार करने की अपील की। उन्होंने आयोजन को गुजरात की चुनावी राजनीति से जोड़ने का आरोप भी लगाया। यह आरोप विपक्ष की ओर से लगाया गया राजनीतिक दावा है; केन्द्र ने इसे आयोजन के उद्देश्य के रूप में स्वीकार नहीं किया है।

सरकार की ओर से दिया गया तर्क अलग है। सूचना एवं प्रसारण मंत्री अश्विनी वैष्णव ने कहा है कि भविष्य में राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों को देश के प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थलों और अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों तक ले जाने की योजना है। यानी सरकार समारोह को एक ही शहर तक सीमित रखने के बजाय उसका दायरा बढ़ाना चाहती है।

फिल्म निर्देशक राहुल ढोलकिया ने भी गुजरात के चयन पर सवाल उठाया। उनका कहना था कि यदि समारोह को दिल्ली से बाहर ले जाना ही उद्देश्य था, तो महाराष्ट्र, केरल, तमिलनाडु या हैदराबाद जैसे सिनेमा से गहराई से जुड़े स्थानों पर भी विचार किया जा सकता था।

एनसीपी (एसपी) की कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष सुप्रिया सुले ने भी नई दिल्ली को आयोजन के लिए उपयुक्त बताया।

गुजरात भाजपा ने विपक्ष की आलोचना को खारिज किया। पार्टी के एक प्रवक्ता ने कहा कि राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार किसी एक राज्य की संपत्ति नहीं हैं और गुजरात में समारोह होने पर आपत्ति को राजनीतिक नजरिए से देखा जा रहा है।

एकता नगर को आयोजन स्थल बनाए जाने से समारोह को गुजरात की खास पृष्ठभूमि भी मिली। यही वह स्थान है जहां सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल की 597 फुट ऊंची स्टैच्यू ऑफ यूनिटी स्थित है।

समारोह में वर्ष 2024 के लिए दादासाहेब फाल्के पुरस्कार अभिनेता अनंत नाग को प्रदान किया गया। आर्टिकल 370 को सर्वश्रेष्ठ फीचर फिल्म का पुरस्कार मिला। ब्रमायुगम के लिए मम्मूटी और चंदू चैंपियन के लिए कार्तिक आर्यन को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का सम्मान साझा रूप से दिया गया। आर्टिकल 370 के लिए यामी गौतम को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री चुना गया।

एकता नगर में हुए समारोह में फिल्म कलाकारों के साथ निर्देशक, तकनीशियन और सिनेमा के दूसरे क्षेत्रों से जुड़े पुरस्कार विजेता भी शामिल हुए।

इस बार राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों का मुद्दा केवल पुरस्कारों तक सीमित नहीं रहा। आयोजन स्थल बदलने के फैसले ने इस सवाल को भी सामने ला दिया है कि राष्ट्रीय सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों को राजधानी में केन्द्रित रखा जाए या देश के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में ले जाकर उनका दायरा बढ़ाया जाए।
