Gujarat Lioness Attack Goes Viral: Bhavnagar Man Survives After Staying Calm During Dramatic Encounter
A dramatic encounter between a lioness and a villager in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district has drawn widespread attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The frightening episode unfolded on Sunday when a lioness attacked a man on a village road, pinned him to the ground for several minutes, and later walked away without inflicting fatal injuries.
Forest officials confirmed on Monday that the victim survived the attack and is recovering.
The viral video captures the tense moments as the lioness held the man down beside a parked pickup vehicle.
Despite suffering visible injuries, the victim remained remarkably calm and avoided making any sudden movements.
At one point, he was even seen gently extending his hand toward the animal, apparently in an attempt to keep it from becoming more aggressive.
As the incident unfolded, villagers gathered at a distance and tried to drive the lioness away by shouting and throwing stones.
However, none of them attempted to move closer due to the obvious danger.
After several anxious minutes, the lioness released the man and quietly walked toward a nearby cattle shelter before disappearing from the area, according to Chirag Amin, Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Shatrunjay Division.
The injured villager was later identified as Kalubhai Parmar.
He was first taken to a government hospital in Palitana for emergency treatment and was subsequently referred to Bhavnagar for advanced medical care.
Forest officials said his condition is stable and he is now out of danger.
According to a statement issued by the Palitana Range Forest Office, the incident occurred on the morning of July 6 in Garajiya village.
Residents had spotted the lioness moving through the area and immediately alerted others, following which panic spread through the village.
Forest officials said the lioness apparently tried to move away from the crowd but injured one person during the confusion.
The department confirmed that the victim is undergoing treatment and continues to receive medical care.
Praising the injured man’s response, the Forest Department said his exceptional patience, courage, and presence of mind prevented the situation from becoming even more dangerous.
Officials noted that remaining calm during such encounters can significantly reduce the risk of provoking a wild animal.
Following the incident, the Forest Department launched an operation to capture the lioness.
Authorities appealed to residents not to chase, provoke,e or attempt to spot the animal on their own.
Instead, people have been urged to immediately inform forest officials if the lioness is seen again.
Investigators revealed that the lioness had hunted an animal near Sonpari village in the Dharwada area on July 5 before moving toward Garajiya village.
Officials said the route forms part of the animal’s regular movement corridor, indicating that it had not strayed unusually far from its natural range.
The latest incident comes shortly after a series of fatal lion attacks reported in June, during which five people lost their lives.
Forest authorities said two of those deaths are still under investigation to determine the exact circumstances.
Officials also pointed out that the Greater Gir landscape has a long tradition of coexistence between humans and Asiatic lions.
The Maldhari pastoral community, to which Kalubhai Parmar belongs, has lived alongside the big cats for generations, often sharing the same landscape with minimal conflict.
Wildlife experts believe the recent rise in human-lion encounters is the result of several interconnected factors.
These include the growing dispersal of lions beyond the core Gir forest, illegal lion shows, disturbance caused by human interference, and increasing encroachment around protected habitats, all of which have reduced the natural buffer between wildlife and human settlements.
Forest officials also attributed part of the increase in aggressive behaviour to the delayed arrival of the monsoon.
Prolonged summer heat can make wild animals more irritable, increasing the likelihood of attacks when they are startled or come into close contact with people.
According to the 2025 Asiatic Lion Census, Gujarat is now home to 891 Asiatic lions, a significant increase from 674 lions recorded in 2020.
As the population continues to grow, more lions are dispersing beyond the Gir National Park into nearby villages and revenue lands, making human-wildlife interactions increasingly common across the region.

रविवार को हुई इस घटना में एक शेरनी ने गांव की सड़क पर एक व्यक्ति पर हमला कर उसे कई मिनट तक जमीन पर दबोचे रखा। हालांकि कुछ देर बाद वह बिना जानलेवा हमला किए वहां से चली गई।
वन विभाग ने सोमवार को पुष्टि की कि घायल व्यक्ति खतरे से बाहर है और उसका उपचार जारी है।
वायरल वीडियो में देखा जा सकता है कि शेरनी एक खड़े पिकअप वाहन के पास घायल व्यक्ति को जमीन पर दबाए हुए है। गंभीर स्थिति के बावजूद वह पूरी तरह शांत बना रहा और किसी तरह की अचानक हरकत नहीं की।
एक क्षण ऐसा भी आया जब उसने बेहद सावधानी से शेरनी को हल्के से छूने की कोशिश की, मानो वह उसे शांत करने का प्रयास कर रहा हो।
घटना के दौरान गांव के लोग कुछ दूरी पर खड़े होकर लगातार शोर मचाते रहे और शेरनी की ओर पत्थर भी फेंके, लेकिन किसी ने उसके पास जाने का जोखिम नहीं उठाया।
कई मिनट तक तनावपूर्ण स्थिति बनी रही। इसके बाद शेरनी ने व्यक्ति को छोड़ दिया और पास स्थित एक मवेशी शेड की ओर बढ़ गई।
शत्रुंजय वन प्रभाग के उप वन संरक्षक चिराग अमीन ने बताया कि इसके बाद घायल व्यक्ति को सुरक्षित बाहर निकाला गया।
घायल व्यक्ति की पहचान कालूभाई परमार के रूप में हुई है।
उन्हें पहले उपचार के लिए पालिताना के सरकारी अस्पताल ले जाया गया और बाद में बेहतर चिकित्सा सुविधा के लिए भावनगर रेफर किया गया। वन विभाग के अनुसार उनकी हालत स्थिर है और अब वे खतरे से बाहर हैं।
पालिताना रेंज वन कार्यालय द्वारा जारी बयान के अनुसार यह घटना 6 जुलाई की सुबह गराजिया गांव में हुई।
गांव के कुछ लोगों ने शेरनी को घूमते हुए देखा और तुरंत अन्य ग्रामीणों को इसकी सूचना दी, जिसके बाद पूरे इलाके में अफरा-तफरी मच गई।
वन अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, भीड़ और शोर-शराबे के बीच शेरनी वहां से निकलने की कोशिश कर रही थी। इसी दौरान एक व्यक्ति घायल हो गया।
विभाग ने बताया कि घायल ग्रामीण का इलाज जारी है और उसकी स्थिति में लगातार सुधार हो रहा है।
वन विभाग ने कालूभाई परमार के धैर्य, साहस और सूझबूझ की विशेष सराहना की। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि उनकी मानसिक दृढ़ता और संयम के कारण स्थिति और अधिक गंभीर नहीं हुई।
विभाग ने यह भी कहा कि ऐसे मामलों में घबराहट या अचानक प्रतिक्रिया देने से जंगली जानवर अधिक आक्रामक हो सकते हैं।
घटना के बाद वन विभाग ने शेरनी को सुरक्षित पकड़ने के लिए विशेष अभियान शुरू कर दिया है। अधिकारियों ने लोगों से अपील की है कि वे स्वयं शेरनी का पीछा करने, उसे भगाने या देखने की कोशिश न करें।
यदि कहीं भी शेरनी दिखाई दे, तो तत्काल वन विभाग को इसकी सूचना दें।
जांच में पता चला कि 5 जुलाई को शेरनी ने सोनपरी गांव के पास स्थित धरवाड़ा क्षेत्र में एक जानवर का शिकार किया था।
इसके बाद वह अपने नियमित आवाजाही वाले मार्ग से गुजरते हुए गराजिया गांव पहुंच गई। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि यह इलाका उसके प्राकृतिक मूवमेंट कॉरिडोर का हिस्सा है।
यह घटना ऐसे समय पर सामने आई है जब जून महीने में शेरों के हमलों से पांच लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है। इनमें से दो मामलों की जांच अभी भी जारी है और वन विभाग मौतों के वास्तविक कारणों की पुष्टि कर रहा है।
वन विभाग ने कहा कि ग्रेटर गिर क्षेत्र में इंसानों और एशियाई शेरों के बीच सह-अस्तित्व का लंबा इतिहास रहा है। घायल कालूभाई परमार मालधारी समुदाय से हैं, जिसके लोग पीढ़ियों से शेरों के साथ एक ही भौगोलिक क्षेत्र में रहते आए हैं।
वन्यजीव विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि हाल के वर्षों में इंसानों और शेरों के बीच बढ़ती मुठभेड़ों के पीछे कई कारण हैं।
इनमें गिर के मुख्य वन क्षेत्र से शेरों का बाहर फैलना, अवैध लायन शो, जंगली जानवरों को परेशान करना तथा संरक्षित क्षेत्रों के आसपास बढ़ता अतिक्रमण शामिल है। इन कारणों से वन क्षेत्र और मानव बस्तियों के बीच का प्राकृतिक सुरक्षा क्षेत्र लगातार कम होता जा रहा है।
अधिकारियों का कहना है कि इस वर्ष मानसून के देर से पहुंचने के कारण लंबे समय तक बनी भीषण गर्मी ने भी शेरों के व्यवहार को प्रभावित किया है।
अत्यधिक गर्मी में जंगली जानवर अधिक चिड़चिड़े हो जाते हैं और यदि उन्हें परेशान किया जाए या अचानक सामना हो जाए तो उनके हमलावर होने की संभावना बढ़ जाती है।
2025 की एशियाई शेर गणना के अनुसार गुजरात में अब 891 एशियाई शेर हैं, जबकि 2020 में उनकी संख्या 674 थी।
शेरों की बढ़ती आबादी के कारण अब बड़ी संख्या में ये वन क्षेत्र से बाहर निकलकर आसपास के गांवों और राजस्व भूमि तक पहुंच रहे हैं, जिससे मानव और वन्यजीवों के बीच संपर्क तथा संघर्ष की घटनाएं लगातार बढ़ रही हैं।
