Truck Crash Turns Religious Gathering Into Disaster
A religious gathering near Shitala Mata Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district ended in tragedy early Sunday after a truck struck devotees and roadside stalls, leaving 12 people dead and 29 others injured, according to police.
The vehicle, carrying a load of paddy, subsequently rammed into the temple’s entrance structure. The collision brought down part of the gateway wall, leaving several people buried beneath the rubble as panic spread through the crowded area.
Emergency personnel and police officers reached the scene and began pulling victims from beneath the collapsed masonry. The injured were transported to hospitals across Gwalior for treatment.
Police Suspect Loss of Control on Sloping Road
Gwalior Superintendent of Police Dharamveer Yadav said the initial investigation pointed towards a possible mechanical problem that may have caused the driver to lose control of the truck.
The accident occurred at approximately 1.30 am, when a large number of worshippers had assembled at the temple for Saptami. Many had travelled from Gwalior and nearby districts to offer prayers.
According to Yadav, police had restricted the movement of heavy vehicles because of the gathering. Officers stopped the paddy-laden truck at a barricade after it approached from the Chinor side.
The vehicle, however, reportedly went out of control while descending a slope. It struck devotees and roadside vendors, passed through the barricading and finally crashed into the temple entrance.
Roadside Stalls Destroyed, Rescue Operation Launched
The impact damaged five or six stalls selling prasad and left numerous people injured. Police estimated that approximately 41 people were struck during the incident.
The collapse of part of the entrance wall compounded the emergency, with several victims trapped beneath the fallen material. Rescue teams worked alongside police personnel to locate and evacuate those caught under the debris.
Authorities subsequently arranged for the injured to receive medical attention at local hospitals. Five of the victims were reported to have suffered serious injuries and were taken to different medical facilities in the city.
Police said all those who died were residents of Gwalior or neighbouring districts.
Administration Arranges Medical Assistance
Gwalior District Collector Ruchika Chauhan said the administration was coordinating treatment for the injured and that financial assistance from Red Cross funds was being used to meet their medical needs.
Officials said necessary medical support was being provided to the victims. The incident has raised concerns about crowd safety and vehicle restrictions around places of worship during major religious gatherings.
The investigation is expected to establish the precise circumstances that caused the truck to enter the crowded temple area despite restrictions on heavy vehicles.

मध्य प्रदेश के ग्वालियर में शीतला माता मंदिर के पास रविवार तड़के हुए दर्दनाक हादसे में 12 लोगों की जान चली गई, जबकि 29 अन्य घायल हो गए। पुलिस के मुताबिक, धान से लदा एक ट्रक श्रद्धालुओं और सड़क किनारे लगी दुकानों को टक्कर मारता हुआ मंदिर के प्रवेश द्वार से जा भिड़ा।
टक्कर इतनी जोरदार थी कि प्रवेश द्वार की दीवार का एक हिस्सा ढह गया। इसके नीचे कई लोग दब गए, जिससे घटनास्थल पर अफरा-तफरी मच गई। सूचना मिलते ही पुलिस और बचाव दल मौके पर पहुंचे और मलबे में फंसे लोगों को बाहर निकालने का अभियान शुरू किया।
घायलों को उपचार के लिए ग्वालियर के विभिन्न अस्पतालों में पहुंचाया गया। पुलिस के अनुसार, मृतकों में ग्वालियर और आसपास के जिलों के निवासी शामिल हैं।
ढलान पर ट्रक का नियंत्रण बिगड़ने की आशंका
ग्वालियर के पुलिस अधीक्षक धर्मवीर यादव ने बताया कि शुरुआती जांच में ट्रक में तकनीकी खराबी आने की आशंका सामने आई है। इसके कारण चालक वाहन पर नियंत्रण खो बैठा होगा। हालांकि, हादसे के वास्तविक कारणों का पता जांच पूरी होने के बाद ही चलेगा।
यह दुर्घटना रात करीब 1.30 बजे हुई, जब सप्तमी के अवसर पर मंदिर में बड़ी संख्या में श्रद्धालु दर्शन के लिए पहुंचे थे। इनमें ग्वालियर के अलावा आसपास के जिलों से आए लोग भी शामिल थे।
भीड़ को देखते हुए प्रशासन ने भारी वाहनों की आवाजाही पर रोक लगा रखी थी। पुलिस के अनुसार, चिनोर की ओर से आ रहे धान से लदे ट्रक को बैरिकेडिंग के पास रोका गया था।
इसी दौरान ढलान पर ट्रक अनियंत्रित हो गया। वाहन श्रद्धालुओं और सड़क किनारे लगी दुकानों को टक्कर मारते हुए बैरिकेडिंग तोड़कर मंदिर के प्रवेश द्वार तक पहुंच गया।
प्रसाद की दुकानें तबाह, मलबे में फंसे लोगों को निकाला गया
हादसे में प्रसाद बेचने वाली पांच से छह दुकानें क्षतिग्रस्त हो गईं। पुलिस के प्रारंभिक आकलन के अनुसार, दुर्घटना की चपेट में करीब 41 लोग आए।
प्रवेश द्वार की दीवार गिरने से बचाव कार्य और चुनौतीपूर्ण हो गया। मलबे में दबे लोगों को निकालने के लिए पुलिसकर्मियों और राहत दलों ने तत्काल कार्रवाई की। घायलों को प्राथमिक उपचार देने के बाद अस्पतालों में भर्ती कराया गया।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, पांच घायलों को गंभीर चोटें आई हैं। उन्हें शहर के अलग-अलग अस्पतालों में उपचार के लिए भेजा गया। बाकी घायलों का भी चिकित्सा उपचार कराया जा रहा है।
प्रशासन ने उपचार के लिए की आर्थिक सहायता की व्यवस्था
ग्वालियर की जिला कलेक्टर रुचिका चौहान ने बताया कि घायलों के इलाज के लिए रेडक्रॉस निधि से आर्थिक सहायता उपलब्ध कराई जा रही है। प्रशासन ने सभी प्रभावित लोगों को आवश्यक चिकित्सा सुविधाएं मुहैया कराने की व्यवस्था की है।
इस घटना ने धार्मिक आयोजनों के दौरान भीड़ प्रबंधन और मंदिरों के आसपास यातायात नियंत्रण की व्यवस्था पर गंभीर सवाल खड़े किए हैं। खासकर उन स्थानों पर सुरक्षा व्यवस्था की समीक्षा की जरूरत सामने आई है, जहां बड़े पर्वों के दौरान रात में भी श्रद्धालुओं की भारी भीड़ जुटती है।
पुलिस दुर्घटना के कारणों की जांच कर रही है। जांच में यह पता लगाने का प्रयास किया जाएगा कि भारी वाहनों पर रोक के बावजूद ट्रक भीड़भाड़ वाले इलाके में कैसे पहुंचा और चालक ने वाहन से नियंत्रण किस परिस्थिति में खोया।
