Indian Pilot’s Fight for Survival After Co-Pilot’s Axe Attack in Cockpit

Smit Machchhar recounts how he fought through repeated blows and fading consciousness to open the cockpit door, enabling others to restrain his attacker and bring 180 people to safety.

An ordinary flight to Tel Aviv turned into a desperate struggle for survival for Indian pilot Smit Machchhar when his co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a crash axe inside the cockpit on September 30.

Despite suffering repeated blows to the head and repeatedly losing consciousness, Machchhar managed to summon the strength to open the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene before the situation could turn into a catastrophe.

Recalling the terrifying ordeal in an interview with Sky News Arabia, Machchhar described his determination to stay alive even when he feared he might not survive.

“I can’t accept my death,” he said, explaining how he forced himself to act despite his injuries.

The incident involved a flydubai Boeing 737 carrying 180 people. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where everyone on board survived.

The co-pilot, Hammam al-Hammami, has been arrested, while authorities in the United Arab Emirates are investigating the episode as a suspected attempted hijacking.

Machchhar said there had been no apparent warning of the impending attack. According to his account, al-Hammami announced that he wanted to pray and stood up inside the cockpit.

Given the confined space, Machchhar said he generally avoided looking directly at someone while they were praying. He instead turned towards his computer to check the timing.

That moment, however, was followed by a sudden assault. Machchhar recalled being struck forcefully on the back of his head.

The impact was so severe that he initially could not identify what had hit him. He said the blows continued, leaving his vision blurred and his awareness of what was happening increasingly uncertain.

At first, he believed the aircraft itself might be in trouble because it appeared to be descending rapidly.

He subsequently realised that the danger was coming from the person beside him. His condition deteriorated as he drifted in and out of consciousness, but he eventually understood that he had to take action if he was to survive.

The pilot later shared a similar account during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from his hospital bed. Machchhar recalled lying on the cockpit floor and hearing terrified passengers outside.

He told Netanyahu that he believed he had only one final opportunity to resist. Drawing on what strength remained, he managed to open the cockpit door.

That move allowed the cabin crew, passengers and pilots who were travelling off duty to rush in and restrain al-Hammami.

Some Israeli passengers were also among those who helped overpower the alleged attacker. Machchhar believes the cockpit door was subsequently shut again as the situation was brought under control.

With the pilots in the cockpit unable to manage the flight normally amid the emergency, off-duty pilots aboard the aircraft took over the task of landing it at Tabuk.

The safe evacuation of all 180 people brought an end to an incident that could have had devastating consequences.

Machchhar said the opening of the cockpit door triggered scenes of panic, with passengers shouting and screaming. Amid the confusion, he was particularly moved by the actions of a colleague who stepped forward to help contain the crisis.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his head, neck and hands. His survival and role in the emergency have drawn praise from Netanyahu, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

The investigation has also raised questions about how al-Hammami came to be operating as a pilot. Reports have alleged that he had previously been barred from flying in Oman because of extremist views.

Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how he came to be assigned to a flight carrying Israeli passengers.

The case has attracted further attention following reports that two other flydubai pilots were arrested in Dubai the previous week on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack.

Both reportedly had flown to Israel in the past and had worked with al-Hammami. The allegations and the links between the cases remain matters for investigation.
