Houthi Missile Attack Disrupts Saudi Airport Operations as West Asia Conflict Forces Flight Cancellations
Riyadh: Air traffic at Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport was thrown into disarray on Tuesday after Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for a missile and drone attack targeting the airport.
The incident forced several airlines, including flydubai, Saudia, flynas and Flyadeal, to cancel multiple flights, highlighting the widening impact of the escalating conflict in West Asia as hostilities linked to the US-Iran confrontation spread across the region.
Developments unfolded at a time when the fragile understanding between Washington and Tehran appeared to have collapsed.
Fresh exchanges of missile strikes and aerial attacks between the two countries have sharply heightened tensions, raising concerns over the possibility of a broader regional conflict.
Flight operations at Abha were severely affected after the airport reportedly came under attack late Monday night.
Airlines suspended or cancelled several services operating to and from the airport as aviation authorities assessed the security situation and operational risks.
The disruption followed closely after fresh American military strikes on Iranian targets earlier on Tuesday.
Those operations came only hours after US President Donald Trump announced plans to restore a blockade on Iranian ports and impose transit charges on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that further intensified geopolitical tensions.
Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks against American allies in the region, effectively ending the temporary arrangement that had been aimed at reducing hostilities and safeguarding commercial navigation through one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
Among the affected carriers, flydubai cancelled both of its scheduled Tuesday departures from Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 2 to Abha.
The two services, originally scheduled to depart at 10:25 a.m. and 4:05 p.m., were withdrawn after operations at Abha Airport were disrupted by the attack.
The airline also disclosed that Monday’s Flight FZ811 from Dubai to Abha had to be diverted to Taif following the temporary closure of Abha International Airport.
Passengers were provided with refreshments and transported by road to their intended destination after landing safely.
Further updates from the carrier confirmed that all flights operating to and from both Abha and Najran on Tuesday had been cancelled.
The airline said it was closely monitoring developments and maintaining contact with affected passengers regarding alternative travel arrangements.
Saudi Arabian Airlines also scaled back operations linked to Abha. National carrier Saudia suspended flights connecting Abha with Riyadh and Jeddah, while flynas and Flyadeal cancelled multiple services to and from Jeddah.
Incoming flights from Riyadh and Jeddah to Abha were also impacted by the disruption.
Available flight information indicated that at least ten scheduled departures from Abha were cancelled between late morning and early evening, underscoring the extent of the operational disruption caused by the attack.
Travellers flying between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have meanwhile been advised to verify the latest status of their flights before leaving for the airport, as airlines continue revising schedules in response to evolving security conditions.
Claiming responsibility for the strike, the Iran-backed Houthi movement said it had launched ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles against Abha International Airport in retaliation for recent airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport, which it blamed on Saudi Arabia.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree warned international airlines against operating in Saudi airspace until what he described as the blockade imposed on Sanaa airport was lifted, signalling the possibility of further attacks if the situation remained unchanged.
The latest disruption to regional aviation comes amid an increasingly volatile security environment affecting both air and sea transport across West Asia.
Commercial shipping, aviation networks, and energy supply routes have all faced mounting pressure as military exchanges continue to intensify.
India has already felt the impact of the crisis.
Earlier this week, an Indian seafarer lost his life and ten other Indian crew members were injured, including two seriously, after Iranian attacks on the commercial oil tankers MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa in the Strait of Hormuz.
Responding to that incident, India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the attacks on the two merchant vessels carrying a total of 30 Indian crew members.
New Delhi summoned Iran’s Deputy Chief of Mission, registered a formal protest and reiterated its demand for an immediate halt to attacks on commercial shipping while calling for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability in West Asia.
With military tensions showing little sign of easing, aviation experts believe airlines will continue reassessing flight schedules and operational routes, increasing the likelihood of further disruptions to both air travel and maritime trade across the region in the days ahead.

प्रभावित एयरलाइनों में फ्लायदुबई ने दुबई अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे के टर्मिनल-2 से अबहा के लिए मंगलवार को निर्धारित अपनी दोनों उड़ानें रद्द कर दीं। सुबह 10:25 बजे और शाम 4:05 बजे रवाना होने वाली इन सेवाओं को अबहा हवाई अड्डे पर परिचालन बाधित होने के कारण उड़ान कार्यक्रम से हटा दिया गया।
एयरलाइन ने यह भी बताया कि सोमवार को दुबई से अबहा जाने वाली उड़ान एफजेड-811 को अबहा एयरपोर्ट के अस्थायी रूप से बंद होने के कारण ताइफ की ओर मोड़ना पड़ा। विमान के सुरक्षित उतरने के बाद यात्रियों के लिए भोजन और सड़क मार्ग से अंतिम गंतव्य तक पहुंचने की व्यवस्था की गई।
कंपनी ने पुष्टि की कि मंगलवार को अबहा और नजरान के लिए तथा वहां से संचालित सभी उड़ानें रद्द कर दी गई हैं। एयरलाइन लगातार हालात पर नजर रखे हुए है और प्रभावित यात्रियों से वैकल्पिक यात्रा व्यवस्था को लेकर संपर्क बनाए हुए है।
सऊदी अरब की घरेलू विमान सेवाओं पर भी इसका व्यापक असर पड़ा। राष्ट्रीय विमानन कंपनी सऊदिया ने अबहा-रियाद और अबहा-जेद्दा मार्ग की उड़ानें स्थगित कर दीं, जबकि फ्लाइनास और फ्लाईअडील ने जेद्दा से जुड़ी कई सेवाएं रद्द कर दीं। रियाद और जेद्दा से अबहा पहुंचने वाली कई उड़ानें भी प्रभावित हुईं।
उपलब्ध उड़ान आंकड़ों के अनुसार मंगलवार को देर सुबह से लेकर शाम तक अबहा से प्रस्थान करने वाली कम से कम दस उड़ानें रद्द करनी पड़ीं, जिससे स्पष्ट है कि हमले का विमान परिचालन पर व्यापक असर पड़ा।
संयुक्त अरब अमीरात और सऊदी अरब के बीच यात्रा करने वाले यात्रियों को सलाह दी गई है कि वे हवाई अड्डे के लिए रवाना होने से पहले अपनी उड़ान की स्थिति अवश्य जांच लें, क्योंकि सुरक्षा परिस्थितियों के अनुसार एयरलाइनें लगातार अपने उड़ान कार्यक्रम में बदलाव कर रही हैं।
हमले की जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार करते हुए ईरान समर्थित हूती संगठन ने कहा कि उसने सऊदी अरब के अबहा अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर बैलिस्टिक मिसाइलों और ड्रोन से हमला किया।
संगठन का दावा है कि यह कार्रवाई सना अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे पर हुए हवाई हमलों के जवाब में की गई, जिसके लिए उसने सऊदी अरब को जिम्मेदार ठहराया।
हूती सैन्य प्रवक्ता याह्या सरी ने अंतरराष्ट्रीय एयरलाइनों को चेतावनी देते हुए कहा कि जब तक सना हवाई अड्डे पर लगाए गए प्रतिबंध समाप्त नहीं किए जाते, तब तक उन्हें सऊदी हवाई क्षेत्र में उड़ान संचालन से बचना चाहिए। इस बयान ने भविष्य में और हमलों की आशंका को भी बल दिया है।
पश्चिम एशिया में लगातार बढ़ते सैन्य तनाव का असर अब केवल जमीनी संघर्ष तक सीमित नहीं रह गया है। क्षेत्र में हवाई सेवाएं, समुद्री व्यापार और ऊर्जा आपूर्ति श्रृंखला सभी गंभीर दबाव का सामना कर रही हैं।
इस संकट का प्रभाव भारत पर भी सीधे तौर पर पड़ा है। इसी सप्ताह होर्मुज जलडमरूमध्य में एमटी अल बहियाह और एमटी मोम्बासा नामक दो वाणिज्यिक तेल टैंकरों पर हुए ईरानी हमलों में एक भारतीय नाविक की मौत हो गई, जबकि दस अन्य भारतीय घायल हुए। इनमें से दो की हालत गंभीर बताई गई है।
घटना के बाद भारत के विदेश मंत्रालय ने दोनों जहाजों पर हुए हमलों की कड़ी निंदा की। इन दोनों पोतों पर कुल 30 भारतीय चालक दल के सदस्य सवार थे।
नई दिल्ली ने ईरान के उप मिशन प्रमुख को तलब कर औपचारिक विरोध दर्ज कराया और वाणिज्यिक जहाजों पर हमले तत्काल रोकने के साथ-साथ पश्चिम एशिया में शांति और स्थिरता बहाल करने के लिए संवाद और कूटनीति का रास्ता अपनाने की अपील दोहराई।
रक्षा विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि यदि क्षेत्रीय सैन्य तनाव इसी तरह बना रहा तो आने वाले दिनों में एयरलाइनों को अपनी उड़ान योजनाओं में और बदलाव करने पड़ सकते हैं। इसके परिणामस्वरूप हवाई यात्रा के साथ-साथ अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुद्री व्यापार भी लंबे समय तक प्रभावित रह सकता है।
