IIT Bombay Student Suicide: Family Alleges Caste Discrimination, Police Register Abetment Case
Sahil Wakode, a second-year Energy Science and Engineering student, died after being found using a mobile phone during an examination; IIT Bombay denies caste-discrimination allegations and says no complaint was made to its SC/ST cell.
MUMBAI: The death of 20-year-old IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode has triggered a police investigation, allegations of caste-based discrimination by his family and renewed protests on the institute campus.
Mumbai Police have registered an FIR following a complaint by Sahil’s father, Ravindra Wakode.
The case names Professor Suryanarayan Doolla, along with unidentified persons, and invokes Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to abetment of suicide, as well as provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The FIR followed allegations by Sahil’s parents that their son had faced caste-based discrimination and harassment in the months preceding his death.
IIT Bombay has rejected the allegation, saying there was no complaint from Sahil regarding caste discrimination either to the institute’s SC/ST Students and Staff Cell or to the administration.
Dispute over events before death
Sahil, who was pursuing engineering in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination on Friday, according to the institute.
IIT Bombay said the student had uploaded the examination paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to obtain answers.
The institute maintained that no disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him after the incident.
According to its account, the matter was discussed with him by the instructor and the head of the department, who counselled him and told him that the incident would not damage his academic career.
Police said Sahil subsequently returned to his hostel room. He was later found dead there.
A police team carried out a panchnama, and his body was sent to Rajawadi Hospital for a post-mortem examination. He was staying in Hostel 4.
Sahil’s parents, however, have given a different account of what their son had been experiencing.
They told reporters that he had been distressed and alleged that he had faced threats and humiliation linked to his caste.
His father, Ravindra, alleged in his complaint that Professor Doolla had subjected Sahil to caste-based discriminatory treatment for around three months.
The complaint also alleges that the professor acted on the instructions of IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh B Kedare.
These allegations are part of the police case and have not been established.
Kedare has categorically denied caste-based discrimination at the institute and said such information about students is not available to faculty members in their routine functioning.
Parents say son had spoken of distress.s
Ravindra and his wife, Sonali Wakode, who live in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district, said they had visited the campus earlier this month after becoming concerned about their son.
They said they encouraged him to concentrate on his education and did not realise that his distress had become so severe.
Ravindra said Sahil had not complained to the family about academic pressure.
According to his parents, he was completing his engineering degree and intended to prepare for the civil services examination afterwards.
Ravindra works at a cooperative bank, while Sonali is a teacher.
The family initially declined to take possession of Sahil’s body, seeking action against those they held responsible.
They later agreed to proceed with the last rites after Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Kumar Sharma assured them that the investigation would be transferred to the Crime Branch and that the persons named in the FIR would be questioned.
Police also said appropriate action would follow if the investigation established their culpability.
The family subsequently took the body to Yavatmal.
They have also sought the state government’s opposition to any anticipatory bail application by the accused and requested legal assistance for proceedings before the Sessions Court and the Bombay High Court.
Advocate Nikhil Kamble, who has been assisting the family, alleged that police action followed pressure from protesting students and Sahil’s parents.
Students protest, examinations postponed.
Sahil’s death sparked a large demonstration at IIT Bombay, with more than 400 students gathering near the institute’s main building and raising slogans against the administration.
The protest later turned into a candlelight march, with students calling for accountability and demanding the resignation of Director Shireesh Kedare.
Students also raised concerns about the institute’s response to suicides and other issues affecting students. One protester said students believed that serious incidents required stronger institutional action.
The agitation continued until Kedare met the students at around 10.30 pm. The gathering was subsequently moved to the convocation hall.
The institute’s ongoing mid-semester examinations were postponed following the incident, according to students.
The protests intensified again on Saturday night, with students holding a candlelight march in memory of Sahil.
IIT Bombay cites examination rules
IIT Bombay said its regulations prescribe disciplinary consequences for academic malpractice, including the use of mobile phones and other unauthorised devices during examinations.
The stated penalty can include an FR grade — meaning Fail and Repeat — along with academic suspension for one semester.
The institute, however, stressed that no disciplinary action had been initiated against Sahil in connection with the examination incident before his death.
The administration has urged people not to speculate while the police investigation is underway.
In its latest statement, IIT Bombay said the police had registered a case and that the institute would cooperate fully with the authorities. It also appealed for privacy for Sahil’s family.
The institute’s SC/ST cell separately circulated an internal communication expressing grief over the student’s death.
The cell said no complaint alleging caste discrimination had been received from Sahil.
The cell said it remained committed to the welfare of SC/ST students and staff and urged students to immediately report any instance of caste-based discrimination.
It also said the institute would continue awareness and sensitisation programmes aimed at addressing caste-related bias.
The police investigation is now expected to examine the allegations made by Sahil’s family, the circumstances surrounding the examination incident and the events leading up to his death.
With the FIR registered and the Crime Branch expected to investigate the allegations, the circumstances preceding Sahil’s death remain under investigation.

मुंबई: IIT बॉम्बे के 20 वर्षीय छात्र साहिल वाकोड़े की मौत के बाद संस्थान में जातिगत भेदभाव के आरोप, पुलिस जांच और छात्रों के विरोध प्रदर्शन ने मामला गंभीर बना दिया है। साहिल के परिवार ने आरोप लगाया है कि मौत से पहले के महीनों में उसे जाति के आधार पर प्रताड़ित किया गया था।
साहिल के पिता रविंद्र वाकोड़े की शिकायत के आधार पर मुंबई पुलिस ने मामला दर्ज किया है। FIR में प्रोफेसर सूर्यनारायण दुल्ला समेत कुछ अज्ञात लोगों को आरोपी बनाया गया है।
पुलिस ने भारतीय न्याय संहिता की धारा 108 के तहत आत्महत्या के लिए उकसाने का मामला दर्ज किया है। इसके अलावा अनुसूचित जाति एवं अनुसूचित जनजाति (अत्याचार निवारण) अधिनियम की संबंधित धाराएं भी लगाई गई हैं।
परिवार के आरोपों के विपरीत IIT बॉम्बे प्रशासन ने जातिगत भेदभाव की बात से इनकार किया है।
संस्थान का कहना है कि साहिल ने न तो SC/ST सेलके पास और न ही प्रशासन के पास इस तरह की कोई शिकायत की थी।
परीक्षा के दौरान मोबाइल इस्तेमाल करने का मामला
साहिल ऊर्जा विज्ञान एवं इंजीनियरिंग विभाग में द्वितीय वर्ष का छात्र था। संस्थान के अनुसार, शुक्रवार को मिड-सेमेस्टर परीक्षा के दौरान उसे मोबाइल फोन का इस्तेमाल करते हुए पाया गया था।
IIT बॉम्बे ने बताया कि साहिल ने परीक्षा के प्रश्नपत्र को ChatGPT पर अपलोड कर उसके जरिए उत्तर हासिल करने की कोशिश की थी। संस्थान के मुताबिक, इस घटना के बाद उसके खिलाफ कोई अनुशासनात्मक कार्रवाई शुरू नहीं की गई थी।
प्रशासन ने कहा कि घटना को लेकर शिक्षक और विभागाध्यक्ष ने साहिल से बातचीत की थी तथा उसे समझाया गया था।
संस्थान का दावा है कि उसे यह भी आश्वासन दिया गया था कि इस घटना का उसके शैक्षणिक भविष्य पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव नहीं पड़ेगा।
इसके बाद साहिल अपने हॉस्टल के कमरे में लौट गया। कुछ समय बाद वह कमरे में मृत पाया गया। पुलिस के अनुसार, वह हॉस्टल-4 में रहता था।
कमरे की जांच और पंचनामा किए गए तथा शव को पोस्टमार्टम के लिए राजावाड़ी अस्पताल भेजा गया।
परिवार ने लगाए गंभीर आरोप
साहिल के माता-पिता रविंद्र और सोनाली वाकोड़े ने आरोप लगाया कि उनका बेटा पिछले कुछ समय से मानसिक रूप से परेशान था और उसने परिवार को अपनी परेशानी के बारे में बताया था।
हालांकि, उनका कहना है कि उन्हें स्थिति की गंभीरता का अंदाजा नहीं था।
पिता की शिकायत में आरोप लगाया गया है कि प्रोफेसर सूर्यनारायण दुल्ला ने लगभग तीन महीने तक साहिल के साथ जातिगत भेदभाव किया।
शिकायत में IIT बॉम्बे के निदेशक प्रोफेसर शिरीष बी. केदारे का भी नाम लिया गया है और आरोप लगाया गया है कि दुल्ला कथित तौर पर उनके निर्देशों पर ऐसा कर रहे थे।
ये आरोप फिलहाल पुलिस जांच का हिस्सा हैं और इनकी स्वतंत्र रूप से पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
IIT बॉम्बे के निदेशक केदारे ने परिसर में जातिगत भेदभाव के आरोपों को खारिज किया है। उनका कहना है कि संस्थान के रोज
दैनिक प्रशासनिक और शैक्षणिक कामकाज में इस तरह का भेदभाव नहीं किया जाता। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि छात्रों की जाति संबंधी जानकारी सामान्य तौर पर शिक्षकों या अन्य लोगों के लिए उपलब्ध नहीं होती।
माता-पिता बोले—बेटा पढ़ाई का दबाव नहीं बता रहा था
यवतमाल जिले के रहने वाले साहिल के माता-पिता ने बताया कि वे इस महीने की शुरुआत में उससे मिलने कैंपस गए थे। उस समय उन्होंने बेटे का हौसला बढ़ाने और पढ़ाई पर ध्यान देने के लिए कहा था।
रविंद्र ने कहा कि साहिल ने परिवार से शैक्षणिक दबाव की कोई शिकायत नहीं की थी। उनके मुताबिक, बेटे ने इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद सिविल सेवा परीक्षा की तैयारी करने की योजना बनाई थी।
रविंद्र एक स्थानीय सहकारी बैंक में काम करते हैं, जबकि साहिल की मां सोनाली शिक्षिका हैं।
परिवार ने शुरुआत में शव लेने से इनकार करते हुए आरोपियों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई की मांग की। बाद में मुंबई के संयुक्त पुलिस आयुक्त (कानून एवं व्यवस्था) मनोज कुमार शर्मा द्वारा जांच क्राइम ब्रांच को सौंपने और FIR में नामजद लोगों से पूछताछ का आश्वासन दिए जाने के बाद परिवार शव लेकर यवतमाल रवाना हुआ।
पुलिस ने कहा कि जांच में आरोपों की पुष्टि होने पर कानून के मुताबिक कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
परिवार ने सरकार से यह भी मांग की है कि आरोपी यदि अग्रिम जमानत के लिए अदालत का रुख करते हैं तो उसका विरोध किया जाए।
साथ ही उन्होंने सत्र न्यायालय और हाई कोर्ट में कानूनी सहायता उपलब्ध कराने की मांग की है।
परिवार की मदद कर रहे अधिवक्ता निखिल कांबले ने आरोप लगाया कि छात्रों और परिवार के विरोध के बाद पुलिस ने मामले में कार्रवाई की।
400 से अधिक छात्रों ने किया प्रदर्शन
साहिल की मौत की खबर फैलने के बाद IIT बॉम्बे परिसर में छात्रों का विरोध प्रदर्शन शुरू हो गया। 400 से अधिक छात्र संस्थान की मुख्य इमारत के पास एकत्र हुए और प्रशासन के खिलाफ नारे लगाए।
बाद में छात्रों ने कैंडल मार्च निकाला और निदेशक शिरीष केदारे के इस्तीफे की मांग की। प्रदर्शनकारी छात्रों ने संस्थान में छात्रों की समस्याओं को लेकर प्रशासन की भूमिका पर भी सवाल उठाए।
एक छात्र ने कहा कि गंभीर घटनाओं के बाद भी प्रशासन की कार्यप्रणाली में पर्याप्त बदलाव नहीं होने की शिकायत लंबे समय से छात्रों के बीच रही है।
रात करीब 10.30 बजे निदेशक केदारे प्रदर्शन कर रहे छात्रों से मिलने पहुंचे। बैठक के बाद छात्रों को मुख्य इमारत के सामने से हटाकर कन्वोकेशन हॉल में ले जाया गया।
छात्रों के अनुसार, घटना के बाद चल रही मिड-सेमेस्टर परीक्षाएं स्थगित कर दी गईं।
परीक्षा में मोबाइल के इस्तेमाल पर संस्थान के क्या नियम हैं?
IIT बॉम्बे के नियमों के अनुसार परीक्षा में अकादमिक अनियमितता के तहत मोबाइल फोन, टैबलेट, स्मार्टवॉच, चिट या अन्य अनधिकृत उपकरणों के इस्तेमाल पर कार्रवाई का प्रावधान है। इसमें FR यानी Fail and Repeat ग्रेड और एक सेमेस्टर तक अकादमिक निलंबन शामिल हो सकते हैं।
हालांकि, संस्थान ने स्पष्ट किया है कि साहिल के खिलाफ परीक्षा में मोबाइल इस्तेमाल के मामले में उसकी मौत से पहले कोई अनुशासनात्मक कार्रवाई शुरू नहीं की गई थी।
SC/ST सेल ने भी जारी किया बयान
IIT बॉम्बे के SC/ST Students and Staff Cell ने एक आंतरिक संदेश में साहिल की मौत पर दुख जताया। सेल ने कहा कि साहिल की ओर से जातिगत भेदभाव को लेकर उसके पास कोई शिकायत दर्ज नहीं कराई गई थी।
सेल ने कहा कि वह SC/ST छात्रों और कर्मचारियों के कल्याण के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है तथा जातिगत भेदभाव से संबंधित किसी भी शिकायत पर उचित कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
संस्थान ने छात्रों से अपील की है कि यदि उन्हें जातिगत भेदभाव का सामना करना पड़े तो वे तत्काल SC/ST सेल से संपर्क करें। IIT बॉम्बे ने यह भी कहा कि वह जागरूकता और संवेदनशीलता कार्यक्रम जारी रखेगा ताकि प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष जातिगत पूर्वाग्रहों से निपटा जा सके।
इस बीच, पुलिस ने मामले की जांच शुरू कर दी है। जांच में परिवार द्वारा लगाए गए जातिगत भेदभाव के आरोपों के साथ-साथ परीक्षा केंद्र में हुई घटना और साहिल की मौत से पहले की परिस्थितियों की भी पड़ताल की जाएगी।
IIT बॉम्बे ने लोगों से जांच पूरी होने तक अटकलों से बचने की अपील की है और कहा है कि संस्थान पुलिस को जांच में पूरा सहयोग देगा।
