IIT Delhi Students Protest After MSc Student’s Death, Demand Independent Probe and Administrative Accountability
Nearly 300 students gathered outside the director’s office after the death of 31-year-old MSc Physics student Rishikesh, raising concerns over campus support systems and seeking action against officials and financial support for his family.
A rare large-scale student protest unfolded at IIT Delhi on Monday as nearly 300 students gathered inside the institute’s main building, pressing the administration for answers after the death of a 31-year-old MSc Physics student two days earlier.
The demonstration, which began in the morning near the Lecture Hall Complex, gradually expanded and shifted to the lobby outside Director Rangan Banerjee’s office.
By the evening, students were demanding a thorough investigation, accountability from those responsible for student welfare, and stronger institutional support for vulnerable students.
The immediate trigger was the death of Rishikesh, an MSc Physics student who allegedly died by suicide after falling from the sixth floor of a campus building on Saturday.
Students said his death had renewed serious concerns about mental health support and the institute’s handling of students facing personal and academic difficulties.
Protesters described the incident as part of a wider pattern rather than an isolated tragedy.
According to students, eight suicides have taken place at IIT Delhi since 2023.
The institute has not publicly accepted the protesters’ characterisation of the circumstances surrounding all those deaths.
Among the principal demands were an independent inquiry into the recent deaths, the resignation of Associate Dean of Student Welfare Professor Sreedevi Upadhyaula and financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for Rishikesh’s family.
Students also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Rishikesh’s return to campus after a period of absence.
According to protesters, Rishikesh had taken a semester-long break following the death of his father earlier this year and had received treatment for mental health difficulties.
Students alleged that when he returned to the campus in late July, he encountered problems related to hostel accommodation and was required to undergo additional procedures before being allotted a room.
They claimed that despite medical fitness clearances from hospitals where he had been treated, Rishikesh was asked to obtain another clearance from the IIT Delhi hospital.
As a result, students alleged, he had to stay in rented accommodation outside the campus along with his mother.
These allegations formed a major part of the protesters’ criticism of what they described as an inadequate and insensitive response from the administration towards students dealing with emotional or personal crises.
As the protest intensified, IIT Delhi cancelled classes for Monday.
The students later moved towards the main administrative building, where representatives met the director and submitted their demands.
Director Rangan Banerjee later told the students that an inquiry committee would be set up to examine the matter.
However, he did not agree to the immediate resignation of Professor Sreedevi, a decision that prompted a strong negative reaction from the demonstrators.
Students who had initially welcomed the announcement of an inquiry soon began protesting again after learning that their demand for the Associate Dean’s resignation would not be accepted.
Rishikesh’s family will receive Rs 6 lakh as compensation, while the institute will also cover medical expenses incurred during his treatment, the director told students.
The amount, however, fell far short of the Rs 1 crore demanded by protesters and did little to calm the crowd.
Police said a preliminary inquiry indicated that Rishikesh entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. on Saturday.
He later went to the Lecture Hall Complex, travelled to the sixth floor in a lift and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.
His death was the second alleged suicide reported at IIT Delhi this year. In March, a 19-year-old BTech student was found dead inside his apartment on the campus.
The protest has now brought renewed attention to the pressures faced by students at elite academic institutions and the systems available to support those struggling with bereavement, mental health challenges or academic disruption.
For the students gathered outside the director’s office, Monday’s protest was about more than the circumstances of one death.
Their central message was that repeated tragedies require an institutional response that goes beyond individual investigations and examines whether the wider student welfare system itself needs urgent reform.

छात्रों ने मांग की कि हालिया मौतों और संबंधित परिस्थितियों की स्वतंत्र जांच कराई जाए।
उन्होंने एसोसिएट डीन ऑफ स्टूडेंट वेलफेयर प्रोफेसर श्रीदेवी उपाध्यौला के इस्तीफे की भी मांग की। इसके अलावा ऋषिकेश के परिवार को एक करोड़ रुपये की आर्थिक सहायता देने की मांग रखी गई।
प्रदर्शन के दौरान छात्रों ने ऋषिकेश के पिछले कुछ महीनों की परिस्थितियों का भी उल्लेख किया।
उनके अनुसार, पिता की मृत्यु के बाद ऋषिकेश ने मानसिक स्वास्थ्य संबंधी कठिनाइयों के कारण एक सेमेस्टर का अवकाश लिया था और उपचार भी कराया था।
छात्रों ने आरोप लगाया कि जब वह जुलाई के अंत में वापस परिसर में लौटे, तो हॉस्टल में रहने की प्रक्रिया को लेकर उन्हें मुश्किलों का सामना करना पड़ा।
प्रदर्शनकारियों के अनुसार, सेमेस्टर अवकाश के कारण उनका नाम हॉस्टल रिकॉर्ड से हटा दिया गया था।
छात्रों का यह भी आरोप था कि जिन अस्पतालों में ऋषिकेश का उपचार हुआ था, वहां से फिटनेस से जुड़ी अनुमति मिलने के बावजूद उन्हें आईआईटी दिल्ली अस्पताल से एक और मंजूरी लेने के लिए कहा गया।
प्रदर्शनकारियों का दावा है कि इस वजह से वह अपनी मां के साथ परिसर के बाहर किराये के मकान में रहने को मजबूर हुए।
इन आरोपों को लेकर आईआईटी दिल्ली प्रशासन की ओर से प्रदर्शन के दौरान विस्तृत सार्वजनिक प्रतिक्रिया सामने नहीं आई, लेकिन निदेशक ने छात्रों को जांच समिति गठित करने का आश्वासन दिया।
जैसे-जैसे प्रदर्शन बढ़ा, संस्थान ने सोमवार की सभी कक्षाएं रद्द कर दीं। बाद में छात्र मुख्य प्रशासनिक भवन पहुंच गए, जहां निदेशक रंगन बनर्जी ने छात्र प्रतिनिधियों के साथ बैठक की।

पुलिस की प्रारंभिक जांच के अनुसार, ऋषिकेश शनिवार सुबह करीब आठ बजे मुख्य द्वार से आईआईटी दिल्ली परिसर में प्रवेश करने के बाद लेक्चर हॉल कॉम्प्लेक्स पहुंचे।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, वह लिफ्ट से छठी मंजिल पर गए और इसके बाद इमारत के सामने की ओर से कथित रूप से छलांग लगा दी।
इस वर्ष आईआईटी दिल्ली परिसर में कथित आत्महत्या का यह दूसरा मामला बताया जा रहा है। मार्च में 19 वर्षीय बीटेक छात्र अपने परिसर स्थित अपार्टमेंट में मृत पाया गया था।
