They want an assessment by doctors who are not connected to the prison system.
The demand follows a disagreement over where Khan was examined after Pakistan’s Supreme Court permitted a medical evaluation at Shifa International Hospital on August 18.
Instead of being taken to the private hospital, his sons say he was brought to a government facility, examined and subsequently returned to his cell.
That episode has become a focal point for the family, which says it wants verifiable medical evidence rather than verbal assurances.
Family Alleges Isolation Is Affecting Khan
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Kasim and Sulaiman described Khan’s detention conditions as increasingly concerning.
They alleged that he spends as much as 23 hours a day alone and has faced restrictions on reading material and telephone contact with his children.
The brothers characterised the prolonged separation from family and outside contact as psychological pressure.
Sulaiman said an independent examination was particularly important because the government had publicly maintained that Khan was physically and mentally well.
Kasim, meanwhile, said his father had been experiencing heart palpitations and severe anxiety.
He said the reports were difficult for the family to reconcile with his longstanding perception of Khan as someone who is unusually composed and mentally resilient.
The sons have responded by taking their concerns beyond Pakistan, saying they intend to keep the issue in the public domain and draw international attention to what they regard as violations of legal safeguards.
Government Rejects Claims
Islamabad has disputed the family’s account.
Pakistan’s information and broadcasting ministry has denied that Khan is being mistreated and said authorities are complying with the Supreme Court’s directions.
It has also questioned reports about his ill health, saying they are not supported by prison or medical documentation.
The competing claims have left the central question unresolved: whether Khan’s current physical and psychological condition should be independently verified.
For his sons, that verification is the point.
They argue that an examination by doctors outside the government system would provide an objective record and settle the disagreement over his health.
A Prisoner at the Centre of Pakistan’s Political Conflict
Khan’s detention is inseparable from the political turmoil that followed his removal from office.
The former cricketer-turned-politician became Pakistan’s prime minister in 2018 but lost power in 2022 after a parliamentary no-confidence vote.
His arrest followed in 2023, beginning a prolonged period of imprisonment and legal battles.
He was sentenced to three years in the Toshakhana case and has subsequently faced proceedings in numerous other cases.
The allegations against him have included matters involving state secrets and government gifts.
Khan has rejected the accusations and repeatedly described the cases as politically motivated.
The latest controversy over his health therefore comes against an already deeply polarised political backdrop.
His sons are seeking an independent medical record, while the government maintains that there is no documentary evidence of the serious health concerns being alleged.

बेटों ने किताबों तक पहुंच और परिवार के साथ फोन पर बातचीत को लेकर भी प्रतिबंधों का आरोप लगाया।
सुलेमान के मुताबिक, लगातार बाहरी संपर्क से दूर रखना उनके पिता के मानसिक स्वास्थ्य पर असर डाल सकता है।
उनका कहना है कि यदि सरकार को उनकी सेहत सामान्य होने का भरोसा है, तो स्वतंत्र जांच से उस दावे की पुष्टि कराने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं होनी चाहिए।
कासिम ने यह भी दावा किया कि इमरान खान को दिल की धड़कन तेज होने और गंभीर चिंता जैसी परेशानियां हो रही हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि परिवार के लिए यह बात इसलिए और चिंताजनक है क्योंकि उनके पिता को वे आम तौर पर बेहद शांत और मानसिक रूप से मजबूत व्यक्ति के रूप में देखते रहे हैं।
दोनों बेटे अब इस मुद्दे को पाकिस्तान की सीमाओं से बाहर भी उठाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।
