Imran Khan Returns to Adiala Jail After Supreme Court-Ordered Medical Review
Pakistani authorities declared the jailed former prime minister medically fit after an overnight hospital assessment, even as questions over his health, family access and multiple legal battles continue.
Imran Khan was taken back to Adiala Jail after a Supreme Court-ordered medical examination in Islamabad found him medically fit. Concerns over his health and his pending legal cases continue.
Imran Khan’s return to Adiala Jail has brought an end, at least for now, to the latest legal intervention over his health.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court had directed that the 73-year-old former prime minister be taken from prison for a medical assessment after concerns were raised about his condition.
He was examined overnight at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, a government hospital in Islamabad, and authorities later said he was medically fit to return to custody.
Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, remains imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail while pursuing appeals and defending himself in a long list of criminal cases.
The immediate health concern had gained significance after a medical report described him as suffering from “level three plus” anxiety, a severe condition that can affect normal functioning and place considerable mental and physical strain on a person.
His lawyers have also previously raised concerns about the deterioration of vision in one of his eyes, although a later medical assessment reported improvement.
Despite the latest examination, his family and party continue to question the conditions of his detention and access to him.
His sons have sought permission to travel to Pakistan, saying they are concerned about his wellbeing, while PTI and Khan’s family have repeatedly complained of restrictions on meetings.
Al-Qadir Trust Case Keeps Him in Jail
The legal case with the most immediate consequence for Khan is the Al-Qadir Trust matter.
He is serving a 14-year prison sentence in that case, a conviction that remains effective even though several other convictions handed down against him have either been suspended or overturned.
The prosecution has accused Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, of benefiting from land allegedly worth as much as $25 million.
The allegations are linked to a property developer who had faced a money-laundering investigation in Britain.
Prosecutors contend that Khan played a role in the handling of £190 million returned to Pakistan by British authorities, while the couple later received the land.
Khan has denied the allegations and challenged the conviction before the courts.
Other Convictions Have Either Been Suspended or Overturned
Khan’s legal history since his removal from power has been marked by a succession of cases, many of them carrying major political consequences.
One case involved gifts received during his 2018-2022 term as prime minister.
Pakistani authorities alleged that valuable items received from foreign dignitaries and deposited under the Toshakhana system were later sold.
The reported items included luxury watches, jewellery, perfumes and other high-value goods.
A three-year sentence imposed in 2023 in that matter was suspended.
Khan and Bushra Bibi were later given 14-year sentences in a related proceeding, but those sentences have also been suspended while appeals are pending.
He was also sentenced to 10 years in a case concerning a classified diplomatic communication, commonly known as the cipher case. That conviction was later set aside.
The diplomatic cable had recorded discussions involving Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington and US officials.
Khan repeatedly argued that it supported his claim that foreign and domestic forces, including Pakistan’s military establishment, had worked together to remove him from office.
Washington and the Pakistani military rejected the allegation.
Marriage Case Also Ended in Acquittal
Before Pakistan’s 2024 general election, Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in a case challenging the legality of their 2018 marriage under Islamic law.
The prosecution argued that the marriage had taken place before the required waiting period following Bushra Bibi’s divorce had ended. Khan and his wife denied wrongdoing and were eventually acquitted in July 2024.
Terrorism Trial Still Pending
Another major case against Khan concerns the violence that followed his arrest in May 2023.
The Pakistani government has alleged that PTI supporters attacked public property and military installations during widespread unrest. Hundreds of party supporters faced military trials, with many being convicted.
Khan is also facing terrorism-related charges arising from the same period, although his trial has not yet concluded.
PTI argues that the criminal cases against its leader are part of a broader political campaign against him following his conflict with Pakistan’s military establishment.
Khan’s supporters have particularly blamed Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir for his continued imprisonment, an allegation rejected by the authorities.
PTI Signals Possibility of Reconciliation
Even as Khan remains behind bars, PTI has recently indicated that it may be open to easing its confrontation with the military.
In a recent interview, PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari suggested that Khan would not act in a way that harmed Pakistan if he were released.
He also indicated that the party could consider reconciliation with the military establishment.
However, political observers have warned that it remains uncertain whether such statements represent Khan’s own position or a settled consensus within PTI.
For Khan, the medical examination has answered only one immediate question. His return to prison means his legal and political battles continue unchanged.
His appeal against the Al-Qadir Trust conviction remains pending.
The terrorism case is still moving through the courts.
Questions over his health and access to his family have not disappeared, and the larger political conflict surrounding his imprisonment remains unresolved.
For now, Pakistan’s most prominent jailed political figure is back in Adiala Jail, medically cleared by the authorities but still at the centre of one of the country’s most consequential political and legal confrontations.

इमरान खान को स्वास्थ्य संबंधी चिंताओं के बीच सरकारी पाकिस्तान इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल साइंसेज में रातभर निगरानी और जांच के लिए रखा गया था।
इससे पहले उनकी मेडिकल रिपोर्ट में “लेवल थ्री प्लस” एंग्जायटी का उल्लेख किया गया था, जिसे गंभीर स्तर की चिंता की स्थिति माना जाता है।
ऐसी स्थिति व्यक्ति की रोजमर्रा की गतिविधियों, मानसिक संतुलन और शारीरिक स्वास्थ्य पर प्रभाव डाल सकती है।
खान के वकील पहले उनकी एक आंख की दृष्टि कमजोर होने का मुद्दा भी उठा चुके हैं, हालांकि बाद की मेडिकल जांच में इसमें सुधार की बात कही गई थी।
परिवार और PTI की चिंताएं बरकरार
मेडिकल जांच के बाद उन्हें फिट घोषित कर दिया गया, लेकिन खान के स्वास्थ्य को लेकर परिवार और पाकिस्तान तहरीक-ए-इंसाफ की चिंताएं समाप्त नहीं हुई हैं।
उनके बेटों ने पाकिस्तान आने और पिता से मिलने के लिए वीजा की मांग की है। परिवार और PTI का आरोप है कि उन्हें इमरान खान तक पर्याप्त पहुंच नहीं दी जा रही और मुलाकातों पर लगातार पाबंदियां लगाई जा रही हैं।
इमरान खान लगभग तीन वर्षों से अडियाला जेल में हैं। अप्रैल 2022 में अविश्वास प्रस्ताव के जरिए सत्ता से हटाए जाने के बाद उनके खिलाफ 100 से अधिक मामले दर्ज किए गए।
अल-कादिर ट्रस्ट मामला बना सबसे बड़ा कानूनी संकट
वर्तमान में इमरान खान की जेल में मौजूदगी का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण आधार अल-कादिर ट्रस्ट मामले में मिली 14 वर्ष की सजा है।
यह उनकी ऐसी प्रमुख दोषसिद्धि है जो अभी प्रभावी है। अन्य कई मामलों में उनकी सजा या तो निलंबित हो चुकी है अथवा अदालतों ने दोषसिद्धि रद्द कर दी है।
इस मामले में अभियोजन पक्ष का आरोप है कि इमरान खान और उनकी पत्नी बुशरा बीबी को एक प्रॉपर्टी कारोबारी से करोड़ों डॉलर मूल्य की जमीन मिली।
यह कारोबारी ब्रिटेन में मनी लॉन्ड्रिंग से जुड़े मामले का सामना कर रहा था।
अभियोजन के अनुसार, ब्रिटेन से पाकिस्तान वापस लाई गई 19 करोड़ पाउंड की रकम से जुड़े मामले में इमरान खान की भूमिका के बाद कथित रूप से यह लाभ मिला।
खान ने आरोपों को खारिज किया है और उनकी अपील अदालत में लंबित है।
कई मामलों में सजा निलंबित या रद्द
इमरान खान पर तोशाखाना से जुड़े आरोप भी लगे। उन पर आरोप था कि प्रधानमंत्री रहते हुए मिले कुछ मूल्यवान उपहारों को बाद में बेच दिया गया।
इन उपहारों में महंगी घड़ियां, आभूषण, इत्र और अन्य विलासिता की वस्तुएं शामिल थीं। एक “मास्टर ग्राफ” घड़ी की कीमत करीब 8.5 करोड़ पाकिस्तानी रुपये बताई गई थी।
2023 में इस मामले में मिली तीन वर्ष की सजा बाद में निलंबित कर दी गई।
इसके बाद खान और बुशरा बीबी को एक अन्य फैसले में 14-14 वर्ष की सजा सुनाई गई, लेकिन वह सजा भी अपील लंबित रहने के दौरान स्थगित है।
गोपनीय राजनयिक केबल से जुड़े एक अन्य मामले में खान को 10 वर्ष की सजा मिली थी। बाद में अदालत ने उस दोषसिद्धि को रद्द कर दिया।
खान का दावा था कि यह केबल उन्हें सत्ता से हटाने के लिए अमेरिका समर्थित साजिश का प्रमाण है, जिसमें पाकिस्तानी सैन्य प्रतिष्ठान की भूमिका भी थी।
अमेरिका और पाकिस्तान की सेना ने इस दावे को अस्वीकार किया है।
विवाह मामले में हो चुके हैं बरी
2024 के आम चुनाव से पहले इमरान खान और बुशरा बीबी को उनके 2018 के विवाह से जुड़े मामले में सात-सात वर्ष की सजा सुनाई गई थी।
अदालत में आरोप था कि बुशरा बीबी के पिछले विवाह के बाद इस्लामी कानून के तहत आवश्यक इद्दत अवधि पूरी होने से पहले दोनों ने निकाह कर लिया था।
बाद में जुलाई 2024 में दोनों को इस मामले से बरी कर दिया गया।
मई 2023 की हिंसा से जुड़े आतंकवाद मामले का सामना
इमरान खान के खिलाफ एक अन्य महत्वपूर्ण मामला मई 2023 में उनकी गिरफ्तारी के बाद भड़की हिंसा से जुड़ा है।
सरकार का आरोप है कि उस दौरान PTI समर्थकों ने सरकारी संपत्तियों और सैन्य प्रतिष्ठानों को निशाना बनाया। सैकड़ों समर्थकों के खिलाफ मुकदमे चलाए गए और कई लोगों को सैन्य अदालतों ने दोषी ठहराया।
इमरान खान भी इस घटनाक्रम से जुड़े आतंकवाद के आरोपों का सामना कर रहे हैं और उनका मुकदमा अभी जारी है।
PTI का आरोप है कि खान के खिलाफ मामले राजनीतिक रूप से प्रेरित हैं और यह कार्रवाई उनके तथा पाकिस्तान के सैन्य नेतृत्व के बीच टकराव का परिणाम है। अधिकारी इन आरोपों से इनकार करते हैं।
PTI ने सेना के साथ सुलह के संकेत दिए
इमरान खान की कैद के बीच PTI की ओर से हाल में यह संकेत भी दिया गया है कि पार्टी सेना के साथ टकराव कम करने के लिए बातचीत का रास्ता खुला रख सकती है।
PTI प्रवक्ता जुल्फिकार बुखारी ने एक साक्षात्कार में कहा कि अगर इमरान खान रिहा होते हैं तो वह ऐसा कोई कदम नहीं उठाएंगे जिससे देश को नुकसान पहुंचे।
इससे यह संकेत मिला कि पार्टी सैन्य नेतृत्व के साथ संबंध सुधारने की संभावना देख रही है।
हालांकि, राजनीतिक विश्लेषकों का कहना है कि यह अभी स्पष्ट नहीं है कि यह इमरान खान की निजी और अंतिम नीति है या PTI नेतृत्व के भीतर कोई सर्वसम्मत रुख।
फिलहाल मेडिकल जांच का तात्कालिक चरण समाप्त हो चुका है और इमरान खान वापस अढियाला जेल पहुंच गए हैं।
लेकिन उनकी कानूनी स्थिति में कोई तत्काल बदलाव नहीं आया है।
अल-कादिर ट्रस्ट मामले में उनकी अपील, मई 2023 की हिंसा से जुड़ा आतंकवाद मुकदमा, परिवार से मुलाकात के अधिकार और उनकी सेहत को लेकर उठ रहे सवाल आने वाले दिनों में पाकिस्तान की राजनीति और न्यायिक व्यवस्था में चर्चा के केंद्र में बने रह सकते हैं।
