India Dismisses PoJK Polls as ‘Sham Exercise’, Says Pakistan Using Elections to Mask Illegal Occupation and Rights Violations
New Delhi has strongly rejected the ongoing legislative assembly elections in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), describing the exercise as a façade intended to conceal Pakistan’s continued illegal occupation of the territory and divert attention from what India called serious human rights abuses in the region.
Reaffirming New Delhi’s long-standing position, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) asserted that the entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas presently under Pakistan’s control, remain an integral and inseparable part of India.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India’s stand on the issue has remained unchanged over the years.
Referring to the elections being conducted in PoJK, he said the so-called electoral process could not alter the legal status of the territory, which India maintains is under Pakistan’s illegal and forcible occupation.
Questioning the credibility of the polling exercise, Jaiswal said the elections were merely an attempt to lend legitimacy to Pakistan’s continued control over the region.
He alleged that the exercise was being used to disguise the reality of the occupation while diverting international attention from alleged human rights violations and governance-related concerns.
The MEA spokesperson further said the widespread public unrest currently unfolding in PoJK reflected deep-rooted grievances among residents.
According to him, the continuing protests stem from economic exploitation, denial of fundamental freedoms and dissatisfaction with the prevailing administrative system.
The Centre’s remarks come at a time when protests have intensified across several parts of PoJK.
Demonstrators have levelled allegations of large-scale electoral manipulation, political interference and systematic curbs on democratic rights during the election process.
The allegations have emerged alongside a 52-day agitation spearheaded by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been demanding the release of detained protesters, withdrawal of criminal cases and acceptance of its broader charter of demands.
The organisation has accused the authorities of suppressing peaceful demonstrations and undermining democratic processes through alleged irregularities in the conduct of the elections.
Leaders associated with the movement have further alleged that the electoral process was manipulated to influence the outcome of the polls, thereby diluting the people’s mandate and weakening democratic institutions.
They have also accused the authorities of curbing political dissent through arrests, intimidation and a heavy deployment of security personnel.
Tensions escalated after negotiations between the JAAC and the authorities reportedly ended without agreement on Monday.
Earlier, the committee had fixed a 1 pm deadline on July 27 for the administration to formally accept its demands, warning that it would launch a march from Rawalakot to Muzaffarabad if no settlement was reached.
After the deadline expired without any official breakthrough, thousands of protesters assembled in Rawalakot and began marching towards Muzaffarabad.
During the demonstrations, participants also alleged that Pakistani security forces resorted to indiscriminate firing on protesters, further intensifying the unrest across the region.

भारत ने पीओजेके चुनावों को बताया ‘दिखावटी कवायद’, कहा— अवैध कब्जे और मानवाधिकार उल्लंघनों पर पर्दा डालने की कोशिश
नई दिल्ली ने मंगलवार को पाकिस्तान के कब्जे वाले जम्मू-कश्मीर (पीओजेके) में कराए जा रहे विधानसभा चुनावों को सिरे से खारिज करते हुए इन्हें महज़ एक दिखावटी राजनीतिक अभ्यास बताया।
विदेश मंत्रालय ने कहा कि इस चुनावी प्रक्रिया का उद्देश्य क्षेत्र पर पाकिस्तान के अवैध कब्जे को वैधता का आवरण देना और वहां कथित गंभीर मानवाधिकार उल्लंघनों से ध्यान हटाना है।
भारत सरकार ने एक बार फिर स्पष्ट किया कि जम्मू-कश्मीर और लद्दाख के संपूर्ण केंद्र शासित प्रदेश, जिनमें पाकिस्तान के अवैध कब्जे वाले क्षेत्र भी शामिल हैं, भारत के अभिन्न और अविभाज्य अंग हैं।
मंत्रालय ने कहा कि इस मुद्दे पर भारत का रुख पहले भी स्पष्ट था और आज भी पूरी तरह अपरिवर्तित है।
साप्ताहिक मीडिया ब्रीफिंग के दौरान विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता रणधीर जायसवाल ने कहा कि पीओजेके में कराए जा रहे तथाकथित विधानसभा चुनाव क्षेत्र की वास्तविक संवैधानिक और कानूनी स्थिति को बदल नहीं सकते।
उन्होंने दोहराया कि संबंधित क्षेत्र पाकिस्तान के अवैध और बलपूर्वक कब्जे में है तथा भारत इस स्थिति को स्वीकार नहीं करता।
चुनावी प्रक्रिया की विश्वसनीयता पर सवाल उठाते हुए जायसवाल ने कहा कि यह पूरी कवायद पाकिस्तान द्वारा अपने कब्जे को वैध ठहराने का प्रयास है।
उनके अनुसार चुनावों का इस्तेमाल वास्तविक परिस्थितियों को छिपाने और क्षेत्र में कथित मानवाधिकार उल्लंघनों तथा प्रशासनिक विफलताओं से अंतरराष्ट्रीय समुदाय का ध्यान भटकाने के लिए किया जा रहा है।
विदेश मंत्रालय ने यह भी कहा कि पीओजेके में जारी व्यापक जन आंदोलन वहां के लोगों की गहरी असंतुष्टि को दर्शाता है।
मंत्रालय के अनुसार आर्थिक शोषण, मूलभूत अधिकारों से वंचित किए जाने और प्रशासनिक व्यवस्था के प्रति बढ़ते असंतोष ने लोगों को सड़कों पर उतरने के लिए मजबूर किया है।
भारत की यह प्रतिक्रिया ऐसे समय आई है जब पीओजेके के विभिन्न हिस्सों में विरोध प्रदर्शन लगातार तेज हो रहे हैं।
प्रदर्शनकारियों ने चुनावी प्रक्रिया में कथित धांधली, राजनीतिक हस्तक्षेप और लोकतांत्रिक अधिकारों के व्यवस्थित दमन के आरोप लगाए हैं।
इन आरोपों के बीच संयुक्त अवामी एक्शन कमेटी (जेएएसी) के नेतृत्व में 52 दिनों से आंदोलन जारी है। संगठन हिरासत में लिए गए लोगों की रिहाई, प्रदर्शनकारियों के खिलाफ दर्ज मामलों की वापसी और अपनी अन्य प्रमुख मांगों को स्वीकार किए जाने की मांग कर रहा है।
समिति का आरोप है कि शांतिपूर्ण आंदोलनों को दबाने और चुनावी प्रक्रिया में कथित अनियमितताओं के जरिए लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था को कमजोर किया गया है।
आंदोलन का नेतृत्व कर रहे प्रतिनिधियों का आरोप है कि चुनाव परिणामों को प्रभावित करने के उद्देश्य से पूरी चुनावी प्रक्रिया में हस्तक्षेप किया गया, जिससे जनता के जनादेश को कमजोर करने का प्रयास हुआ।
उन्होंने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि गिरफ्तारियों, डराने-धमकाने और भारी सुरक्षा बलों की तैनाती के जरिए राजनीतिक असहमति को दबाया जा रहा है।
स्थिति तब और तनावपूर्ण हो गई जब सोमवार को जेएएसी और प्रशासन के बीच हुई वार्ता किसी निष्कर्ष पर नहीं पहुंच सकी।
इससे पहले समिति ने 27 जुलाई को दोपहर एक बजे तक अपनी मांगों को स्वीकार करने संबंधी आधिकारिक अधिसूचना जारी करने की समय-सीमा तय की थी।
साथ ही चेतावनी दी थी कि मांगें नहीं मानी गईं तो हजारों लोग रावलाकोट से मुजफ्फराबाद तक मार्च निकालेंगे।
निर्धारित समय-सीमा समाप्त होने के बाद जब कोई सहमति नहीं बन सकी तो बड़ी संख्या में प्रदर्शनकारी रावलाकोट में एकत्र हुए और मुजफ्फराबाद की ओर कूच शुरू कर दिया।
आंदोलनकारियों ने इस दौरान यह भी आरोप लगाया कि पाकिस्तानी सुरक्षा बलों ने प्रदर्शनकारियों पर अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी की, जिससे क्षेत्र में तनाव और बढ़ गया।
